    Abstract
The current study was aimed at developing a package of “model + algorithm” for the design of resin in pulp (RIP) and carbon in pulp (CIP) processes of gold, uranium, and base metals. For this purpose, we first formulated a double-resistance model for irreversible adsorption (accompanied by chemical reaction) in CSTRs, and modified the McKay et al. semi-analytical model for reversible uptake in a similar system. We then devised two algorithms for the design and optimization of reversible and irreversible RIP and CIP cascades. The developed algorithms were applied on the extraction of copper, uranium, and gold. The packages are able to specify the optimum number of stages, reactor volume (V),...

    Abstract
Boric acid (H3BO3) is a weak monobasic acid that exist as a white powder in the standard conditions. In industry, it is used in manufacturing of fiberglas filaments, precious metals soldering and production of flat panel LCD displays. In all of these applications, normal grade boric acid is used, but nuclear industry demands an ultrapure boric acid (UPA) for controlling of the reactivity and power levels in pressurized water reactors. Annual consumption of UPA in Bushehr Power Plant (BPP) is around 60 metric tons. Currently, this amount is imported from Russia, but atomic energy organization of Iran plans to displace it by the acid made inside the country. Domestic production of UPA in...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Payam Asgari, Mahboubeh (Author) ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The successful development and implementation of a knowledge management system requires principles and instructions compatible with the organization. In the absence of essential and domestic components of a given organization, the process of knowledge management implementation will fail to be successfully completed. There are now various models for the implementation of knowledge management; however, these models only recommend general strategic guidelines, hardly offering any specific strategic plans as to how organizations can successfully and effectively implement knowledge management. Since the promotion of productivity is the ultimate goal of knowledge management, the present research...

Coordinated Scheduling of Power and Natural Gas Systems Considering Demand Uncertainty

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nik Payam, Hossein (Author) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The everyday increasing electricity consumption of household and industrial sectors across the world, and also the limited generation capacity and fuel supplies has led electricity companies, whether in private or government sectors, to focus deliberately on power generation planning, its costs, risks and constraints Because of many reasons including high efficiency, low cost of capital investment, expeditious permitting, and operation flexibility of gas-fired generating units, electricity companies prefer them to old ones like coal-fired or oil-fired generating units. Thus natural gas has gained a significant share in the portfolio of electricity generation fuel resources, and it is...

    , Article Journal of Power Electronics ; Volume 11, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 719-725 ; 15982092 (ISSN) Payam, A. F ; Hashemnia, M. N ; Faiz, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper describes a novel Direct Torque Control (DTC) method for adjustable speed Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) drives which is supplied by a two-level Space Vector Modulation (SVM) voltage source inverter (DTC-SVM) in the rotor circuit. The inverter reference voltage vector is obtained by using input-output feedback linearization control and a DFIM model in the stator a-b axes reference frame with stator currents and rotor fluxes as state variables. Moreover, to make this nonlinear controller stable and robust to most varying electrical parameter uncertainties, a two layer recurrent Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to estimate a certain function which shows the machine...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemzadeh, Payam (Author) ; Frounchi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Mollaabasi, Payam (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the past decades, hydrogels have been used as an adsorbent with high potential to remove pollutants in water. Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer networks that have the ability to absorb and store water and water-soluble compounds due to the presence of hydrophilic functional groups in their structure. Different particles with unique characteristics can be used to increase the efficiency of hydrogel absorption. Based on the type of pollutant, hydrogels are divided into three different forms, including particles, films and nanocomposites. In this research, the absorption effect of metal cations as well as the absorption kinetics of polyvinyl pyrrolidine-based hydrogels, sodium...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghaee Foroushani, Mohammad (Author) ; Bozorgmehry Bozarjomehry, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Setoodeh, Payam (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, modeling, simulation, and control of the Saccharomyces Cerevisiae were studied. In the first section, simulation and control of a structural model of saccharomyces Cerevisiae were performed. Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) as a model-independent controller and Global Linearization Controller (GLC) as a model-based controller were designed. Additionally, two types of Kalman filters were designed to predict all states of the structural model: 1-Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), 2- Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). As a concise explanation, the control action of the GLC is a function of all states of the model, and since that measuring all metabolites is not practical, the EKF and UKF...

, Article ISPACS 2012 - IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Signal Processing and Communications Systems ; 2012 , Pages 385-389 ; 9781467350815 (ISBN) Ahmadian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A new method for position determination of stationary targets from radio bearings, using triangulation, and based on the partial derivative analysis of bearing error has been proposed. Mathematical derivations have been carried out and a simulation illustrating the effectiveness of the method has been run. It turns out that, the method works best when the noise is excessively high and the traversed path is asymmetric. In such conditions, the method illustrates an error reduction of up to 5% with respect to the Least Square algorithm

Laser diode modulation under large signal conditions

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering ; May , 2013 , Page(s): 1 - 5 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Ahmadian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Large signal behavior of the Laser Diode is analyzed with the aim of finding a qualitative relationship between modulation amplitude and the change in the shape of its transfer function. It is found that, at quasi-static conditions, increasing the amplitude of the modulating signal smoothes out the original piecewise-linear transfer function of the diode. It further shifts the now smoothed knee point to lower DC currents. As the frequency increases, however, these effects become less and less pronounced. In addition, the transfer function becomes rather wavy due to the failure of current density to reach the saturation level necessary for adequate stimulated emission. At even higher...

In this paper the root cause failure of a super-heater boiler tube is discovered. The tube has been worked in caustic media (pH = 8.9∼9.6) for virtually 40 months. The working temperature and pressure were recorded in the range of 204-315°C and 43 bar, respectively According to the chemical analysis, it was revealed that the tube is in accordance with ASTM A213 Gr T22. The corrosion products of the tube were characterized by EDS, XRF and XRD techniques. Visual inspection indicated that the macro-cavity was promoted on the inner surface of the tube. Also, a drastic wall thinning with gouging marks were observed. As a result of steam blanketing phenomenon, the sodium ions are locally...

Simulation of Red Blood Cell mechanical behavior in optical tweezers experiment based on a particle method

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE), 12 November 2010 through 18 November 2010 ; Volume 2 , 2010 , Pages 325-329 ; 9780791844267 (ISBN) Ahmadian, M. T ; Firoozbakhsh, K ; Hasanian, M
    2010
    Abstract
Optical tweezers provide an accurate measurement technique for evaluating mechanical properties of the living cells and many experimental studies have been done to understand the behavior of cells due to external forces. Numerical studies such as finite element methods have been used in order to simulate mechanical behavior of the Red Blood Cells (RBCs). Recent studies have shown that the particle methods are useful tools to simulate the mechanical behavior of living cells. Since in microscopic scales, using discrete models are preferred than continuum methods, a particle-based method is used to simulate the deformation of RBC which is stretched by optical tweezers. The cytoplasm of RBC is...

Effect of temper rolling and subsequent annealing on texture development and magnetic permeability of semi-processed electrical steel with 2.3 wt.% Si

    , Article International Journal of Materials Research ; Volume 109, Issue 10 , 2018 , Pages 930-937 ; 18625282 (ISSN) Ahmadian, P ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Carl Hanser Verlag  2018
    Abstract
The effect of temper rolling and subsequent annealing on texture development and magnetic properties of semi-processed non grain oriented electrical steel has been investigated. The result shows that 5 % temper rolling and final annealing at 850 8C resulted in strong a-fiber component. The etch-pit technique shows that strain induced boundary migration is responsible for new texture component augmentation. Vibrating sample magnetometery reveals that maximum and minimum magnetic permeability are related to rolling and transverse directions, respectively. Average magnetic permeability is improved to some extent as a result of temper rolling and subsequent annealing. © Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH &...

Evaluation the Effect of Thermo-Mechanical Parameters on Microstructure and Texture of Electrical Steel for Improving Magnetic Permeability

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian, Peyman (Author) ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dependence of some magnetic properties such as core loss and permeability on temper rolling was studied in this thesis. It is shown that with a proper temper rolling sharper textures are obtained in the electrical steel and the magnetic properties in the longitudinal and traverse directions are improved. By texture analysis, it is shown that because of temper rolling, shear strain on the surface of the sheet is the main factor for abnormal grain growth and shear texture formation on the surface. The result of formation of this texture is enhancement of the {100} intensity and reduction of the {111} intensity, leading to the improvement of the permeability. Temper rolling is always...

The influence of vertical deflection of the supports in modeling squeeze film damping in torsional micromirrors

    , Article Microelectronics Journal ; Volume 43, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 530-536 ; 00262692 (ISSN) Moeenfard, H ; Taghi Ahmadian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
The objective of this work is to create an analytical framework to study the problem of squeezed film damping in micromirrors considering the bending of the supporting torsion microbeams. Using mathematical and physical justifications, nonlinear Reynolds equation governing the behavior of the squeezed gas underneath the mirror is linearized. The resulting linearized equation is then nondimensionalized and analytically solved for two cases of the infinitesimal and finite tilting angle of the mirror. The obtained pressure distribution from the solution of the Reynolds equation is then utilized for finding the squeezed film damping force and torque applied to the mirror. The results show that...

    , Article Mechanism and Machine Theory ; Volume 112 , 2017 , Pages 43-60 ; 0094114X (ISSN) Ahmadian, M. T ; Jafarishad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to design and analyze a 3-link micro-device proposed as a micro-manipulator. This micro-manipulator includes 3 micro-beams as links connected to one another with no conventional or flexural joints. While the structure of the micro-manipulator is monolithic, end-effector workspace is achieved through deflection of links which is actuated by piezoelectric layers. By combining static analysis of the links through a multilayer piezoelectric beam model and kinematic analysis of the micro-manipulator, inverse kinematic has been solved utilizing the Taylor series expansion technique and the perturbation method. The obtained results through the present model reveal that...

A new model for dynamic analysis of side mounted diffuser valve micropumps

    , Article 8th Biennial ASME Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA2006, Torino, 4 July 2006 through 7 July 2006 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 ; 0791837793 (ISBN); 9780791837795 (ISBN) Ahmadian, M. T ; Mehrabian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
American Society of Mechanical Engineers  2006
    Abstract
Valveless micropumps are widely used due to simple structure, durability and low maintenance. Understanding the fluid-membrane interaction and performance criteria is still a challenging problem for the scientists. In this work, a new model for side mounted valve micropumps is developed to obtain dynamic response of micropump with respect to piezoelectric actuation. The parameters of this model are obtained in terms of actuation frequency and geometrical dimensions of the micropump. Balancing elastic, inertial and damping forces result in the governing equation of the micropump system model. Analytical studies for the bottom mounted valve micropump indicate pump flux is independent of the...

    , Article 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, ISIE 2007, Caixanova - Vigo, 4 June 2007 through 7 June 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 3362-3366 ; 1424407559 (ISBN); 9781424407552 (ISBN) Tahami, F ; Molla Ahmadian, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
A problem associated with modeling and control of the power factor correction rectifiers is that the ac variations in duty cycle, as well as in the ac input voltage and current are not small, and hence the traditional small signal analysis is not justified. Nonetheless, the low-frequency components of the converter can be modeled via the circuit averaging technique, but the resulting equivalent circuits are, in general, time varying and highly nonlinear. Nonlinear stability analysis methods are not appropriate for analysis and control design of such complicated circuits. In this paper a piecewise affine approximation is introduced for modeling of switching circuits. This approach makes the...

    Abstract
Design and application of superelements in efficient prediction of the structural behavior in a short time has been one of the research interests in the last decade. Superelements are those elements which are capable of producing the same accurate result instead of several combined simple elements. In this paper a new 16-node cylindrical superelement is presented. Static and modal analyses of laminated hollow cylinders subjected to various kinds of loadings and boundary conditions are performed using this element. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate and validate the developed method. The accuracy of the results is evident from comparison of the findings with exact solution method...
