    Abstract
Motivated by the bus escape routing problem in printed circuit boards (PCBs), we study the following optimization problem: given a set of rectangles attached to the boundary of a rectangular region, find a subset of nonoverlapping rectangles with maximum total weight. We present an efficient algorithm that solves this problem optimally in O(n4) time, where n is the number of rectangles in the input instance. This improves over the best previous O(n6) -time algorithm available for the problem. We also present two efficient approximation algorithms for the problem that find near-optimal solutions with guaranteed approximation factors. The first algorithm finds a 2-approximate solution in O(n2)...

Bus Routing on Printed Circuit Boards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadinejad, Amir Mahdi (Author) ; Zarrabi Zadeh, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
recent years, by the huge increase in the number of components on a board, the bus routing problem and minimizing the number of layers of a board has emerged as a significant challenge in designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Two related theoretical problems to bus routing are the Rectangle Escape Problem (REP) and the maximum independent set of rectangles problem where both of these problems are NP-hard in the general form. In this thesis we study some variants of these problems and try to improve the running time or approximation factor of the best algorithms previously provided for solving them. The maximum disjoint set of boundary rectangles problem is a variant of the maximum...

Real Effects of Financial Frictions: The Role of Working Capital

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudzadeh Ahmadinejad, Amineh (Author) ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Nili, Farhad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Our study investigates the real consequences of variations in the first and second moments of working capital requirement (WCR) in the presence of financial frictions. We introduce a theoretical link from imperfect information about WCR to firms’ performance. Firms choose non-prepaid factors of production with uncertainty about required prepayments, where their access to credit is constrained by collateral. After realization, firms with higher WCR may face financial constraints. This uncertainty influences their demand for inputs, albeit risk-neutrality. Unable to employ the projected level of prepaid input, constrained firms encounter capacity underutilization, leading to misallocation of...

Enhancement Of the Quality In PET Brain Images Using AutoGANcoder Algorithms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi Satvati, Reyhaneh Sadat (Author) ; vosoughi, Naser (Supervisor) ; Ghafarian, Pardis (Co-Supervisor) ; Attari, Ali Akbar (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a cutting-edge medical imaging technique that enables the examination of functional activities in different regions of the body, particularly the brain. This technique involves injecting a radiopharmaceutical into the body, which emits gamma rays that are subsequently detected by the PET scanner to generate images. However, a significant challenge in PET imaging is the degradation of image quality due to noise and photon scattering, which can lead to diagnostic errors, especially in sensitive applications such as detecting brain diseases. Various image reconstruction techniques have been developed in the past to mitigate attenuation and scattering...

Forming external behaviors by leveraging internal opinions

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE INFOCOM, 26 April 2015 through 1 May 2015 ; Volume 26 , 2015 , Pages 1849-1857 ; 0743166X (ISSN) ; 9781479983810 (ISBN) Ahmadinejad, A ; Dehghani, S ; Hajiaghayi, M ; Mahini, H ; Seddighin, S ; Yazdanbod, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
People make decisions and express their opinions according to their communities. A natural idea for controlling the diffusion of a behavior is to find influential people, and employ them to spread a desired behavior. We investigate an influencing problem when individuals' behaviors are affected by their friends in an opinion formation process. Our goal is to design efficient algorithms for finding opinion leaders such that changing their opinions has a great impact on the overall external behaviors in the society. We study directed social networks and define a set of problems like maximizing the sum of individuals' behaviors or maximizing the number of individuals whose external behaviors...

    On the rectangle escape problem

    , Article Theoretical Computer Science ; Volume 689 , 2017 , Pages 126-136 ; 03043975 (ISSN) Ahmadinejad, A ; Assadi, S ; Emamjomeh Zadeh, E ; Yazdanbod, S ; Zarrabi Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Motivated by the bus escape routing problem in printed circuit boards, we study the following rectangle escape problem: given a set S of n axis-aligned rectangles inside an axis-aligned rectangular region R, extend each rectangle in S toward one of the four borders of R so that the maximum density over the region R is minimized. The density of each point p∈R is defined as the number of extended rectangles containing p. We show that the problem is hard to approximate to within a factor better than 3/2 in general. When the optimal density is sufficiently large, we provide a randomized algorithm that achieves an approximation factor of 1+ε with high probability improving over the current best...

A Study on Image Retrieval Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadinejad, Reyhaneh (Author) ; Razvan, Mohammad-Reza (Supervisor) ; Kamali-Tabrizi, Mostafa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image retrieval refers to the task of finding images related to a query image within an image set. Due to ever-increasing volumes of data, it has become increasingly necessary to find suitable and efficient methods for searching in massive databases. In this thesis, modern image retrieval techniques developed within the last 15 years have been studied, with an aim to satisfy three primary constraints of efficiency, accuracy, and low memory usage. Our focus has been on content-based retrieval; meaning that instead of using text and other information, we directly utilize image features for analysis and processing. To achieve this, we studied two established techniques, the bag-of-words model,...

    Color discrimination in Caspian pony

    , Article Ippologia ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 27-37 ; 11205776 (ISSN) Ahmadinejad, M ; Pishkar, J ; Asadi, M. R ; Abavisani, A ; Mahadavi, A ; Hassani Bafarani, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Although an early and influential review led to the often-cited conclusion that color vision is rare among mammals, more recent findings suggest that it is actually widespread. According to Jacobs (1993, 2004), all non-nocturnal mammalian species that have been adequately examined show some color vision capacity, although the degree varies enormously. Data on the presence and characteristics of color vision in the horse, however, remain sparse (and almost none in the case of ponies). Eight Caspian pony (four mares and four stallions) were presented with a series of two-choice color vs. grey discrimination problems. Experiments were performed in a box of 3×3 meter containing a wall with two...

An Essay on Effect of Working Capital Financing on Firm Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aziminia, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Mahmoudzadeh Ahmadinejad, Amineh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study examines the effect of working capital financing on the performance of Iranian manufacturing establishments in the credit crunch of 1387 (2008). The identification strategy for this study is comparison of ex-ante features and ex-post performance using instrumental variable (IV) regression. This IV regression, by controlling other determinants of dependence on working capital (domestic demand, exports and imports) and considering credit crunch indicator, can provide an unbiased and consistent estimation impact of working capital channel in credit crunch. This study uses a sample from "Annual Survey of Iranian Manufacturing Establishments" that includes 95512 observations and 28859...

Enhancing solar thermal collector systems for hot water production through machine learning-driven multi-objective optimization with phase change material (PCM)

    Abstract
Energy storage and supply in solar thermal collector systems rely heavily on phase change materials (PCM). It is vital to establish the appropriate values for energy discharge time (tPCM) and net amount of stored energy (Qnet) within the PCMs in order to increase the efficiency of solar thermal collectors. For this study, we implemented a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) for the optimization process using the MATLAB simulator software. The simulation findings show that, under ideal circumstances where tPCM is large and Qnet is low, these two goal functions are inversely connected to one another. According to an analysis of how input parameters affect the...

    Abstract
During recording lung sounds over the chest, heart sounds (HS) are also recorded and interferes with the inteipretation of lung sounds especially at low frequencies. Hence, several methods have been proposed to remove or reduce HS from lung sounds. The first step in most of the methods developed for HS reduction is to localize the segments of lung sounds including HS. In this study a method based on multi-resolution product of lung sounds wavelet coefficients was implemented for HS localization and its performance was compared to that of three methods developed for HS localization. The methods were tested on data from 6 healthy subjects recorded at low (7.5ml/s/kg) and medium (15ml/s/kg)...
