Forward Osmosis in High Saline Water Desalination

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadipuya, Salman (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to population growth, per capita change and heterogeneous distribution of water resources, forecasts demonstrate that more than 66% of the world's population will experience water scarcity by 2025. The major concern of desalination is their management of brine, with concentrations and their associated components more than twice the input concentration. Also, when extracting oil, per 1 oil barrel, about 7 to 10 barrels of high saline water are produced. One of the most common methods for disposing of brine is direct discharge into the environment, which, due to its destructive effects, creates serious threats to marine ecosystems. Therefore, it is necessary to desalting these high saline...

Multi-Target tracking of human spermatozoa in phase-contrast microscopy image sequences using a hybrid dynamic bayesian network

    , Article Scientific Reports ; Volume 8, Issue 1 , 2018 ; 20452322 (ISSN) Arasteh, A ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Salman Yazdi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Nature Publishing Group  2018
    Abstract
Male infertility is mostly related to semen and spermatozoa, and any diagnosis or treatment requires the investigation of the motility patterns of spermatozoa. The movements of spermatozoa are fast and involve collision and occlusion with each other. In order to extract the motility patterns of spermatozoa, multi-target tracking (MTT) of spermatozoa is necessary. One of the most important steps of MTT is data association, in which the newly arrived observations are used to update the previous tracks. Dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) is a powerful tool for modeling and solving various types of problems such as tracking and classification. There can also be a hybrid-DBN (HDBN), in which both...

Molecular engineering and morphology of polyurethane elastomers containing various molecular weight of macrodiol

    Abstract
A series of polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) based on 4,4′-cyclohexamethylene diisocyanate (H12MDI)/1,2-ethanediol as hard segment with the soft segments having different molecular weights of polycaprolactone diols, were effectively polymerized by two step technique. The structural characterization was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to study the crystallinity and hydrophilicity of the prepared polymer films. It was found that crystallinity and hydrophilicity increased with increasing the chain length of soft segments. The effect of molecular weight of polyols on the contact angle, water absorption (%) and swelling behavior of the synthesized...

Towards Optimal Convergence Rates For the Quantum Central Limit Theorem

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrabi, Hami (Author) ; Beigi, Salman (Supervisor) ; Safdari, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Quantum Central Limit Theorem states that when you convolve a centered quantum state, the resulting sequence of states converges to a Gaussian quantum state with the same first and second moments as the original quantum state. Similar to the classical setting, there are various metrics to measure convergence in the Quantum Central Limit Theorem. In this thesis, we aim to examine this theorem under different metrics such as Quantum Relative Entropy and Trace distance, and to prove tight convergence rates for the Quantum Central Limit Theorem

Cache-Aided interference management in wireless cellular networks

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 67, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 3376-3387 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Naderializadeh, N ; Maddah Ali, M. A ; Salman Avestimehr, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We consider the problem of interference management in wireless cellular networks with caches at both base stations and receivers, and we characterize the degrees of freedom (DoFs) per cell to within an additive gap of (1/3) and a multiplicative gap of 2 for all system parameters, under one-shot linear schemes. Our result indicates that the one-shot linear DoF per cell scales linearly with the total amount of cache available in the cell, i.e., the sum of the caches at the central base station and all the receivers within the cell, resembling a similar phenomenon previously observed for the case of fully connected wireless networks. To establish the result, we propose a decentralized and...

A fundamental tradeoff between computation and communication in distributed computing

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 64, Issue 1 , 2018 , Pages 109-128 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Li, S ; Maddah Ali, M. A ; Yu, Q ; Salman Avestimehr, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
How can we optimally trade extra computing power to reduce the communication load in distributed computing? We answer this question by characterizing a fundamental tradeoff between computation and communication in distributed computing, i.e., the two are inversely proportional to each other. More specifically, a general distributed computing framework, motivated by commonly used structures like MapReduce, is considered, where the overall computation is decomposed into computing a set of “Map” and “Reduce” functions distributedly across multiple computing nodes. A coded scheme, named “coded distributed computing” (CDC), is proposed to demonstrate that increasing the computation load of the...

Development of the Population Balance Code for Crystallization of Aluminium Hydroxide

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi Beni, Mahdi (Author) ; Farhadi, Fathollah (Supervisor) ; Movahedirad, Salman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Crystallization of Aluminum Hydroxide is the most important section of the Alumina production processes as the product yield and crystal size distribution (CSD) of this stage strongly affects the whole Alumina production process. In this work to simulate the crystallization in industrial steady precipitation tanks two Population Balance based models developed. First one is the Coupled CFD-Population Balance Model which considers the effects of flow hydrodynamics on crystallization kinetics and CSD. For development of this model the computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS FLUENT has been used. The two phase flow field has been simulated using Eulerian granular multiphase model coupled...

Tracking of Human Sperm Cell using a Dynamic Bayesian Network Based Framework

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Arasteh, Abdollah (Author) ; Vosoughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Salman Yazdi, Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Infertility is an important problem to deal in medicine. In every four couples, on average, one couple is affected by infertility in developing countries. In the majority of cases, the infertility of men has a relationship with spermatozoa and semen, and can be measured by semen and spermatozoa analysis for more advanced diagnosis and treatments. Analysis of the movement patterns of spermatozoa were performed by expert screeners earlier, but nowadays, many of these analyzes are performed using computer-based systems called computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA). The benefits of using CASA instead of expert screeners are achieving system-independency and numerical results at the end of the...

    BQP and the Polynomial Hierarchy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamzei, Fahid (Author) ; Ebrahimi Broojeni, Javad (Supervisor) ; Abolfath Beigi, Salman (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The relation between BQP and PH has been one of the most fundamental open questions since the beginning of the field of quantum computational complexity. Despite the common belief that BQP contains problems outside the polynomial hierarchy, no real progress had been made in solving the problem even in relativized world. In 2009, Aaronson took the first serious step by proposing an oracle problem to separate the relation version of these two complexity classes. Finally, based on Aaronson’s works, in 2018 Raz and Tal separated BQP and PH relative to an oracle in a breakthrough work. This thesis studies the tools and techniques used to solve this challenging problem

Automatic Analysis and Tracking of Motile Cells in Video Microscopy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shayegh, Zahra (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Rabiei, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Salman Yazdi, Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Analysis of semen and quality assessments of sperm cells is of great importance in scrutiny of male fertility. Several methods have been introduced for analyzing and identification of the sperm motility and morphology in a semen sample. Identifying and tracking of rapid and variant movements of multiple sperms, in a short duration of time, is somewhat difficult and complex for human, even for an expert. Then applying semi-automated or automated (un-supervised) methods, based on image analysis and computing, spread fast and computer aided semen analyzer systems, became wildly used in clinical and research laboratories.
In this paper we propose an efficient multiple tracking methods to...

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and...

    Abstract
Background: Rigorous analysis of levels and trends in exposure to leading risk factors and quantification of their effect on human health are important to identify where public health is making progress and in which cases current efforts are inadequate. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a standardised and comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of risk factor exposure, relative risk, and attributable burden of disease. Methods: GBD 2019 estimated attributable mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years of life lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 87 risk factors and combinations of risk factors, at...

    Abstract
The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a rules-based synthesis of the available evidence on levels and trends in health outcomes, a diverse set of risk factors, and health system responses. GBD 2019 covered 204 countries and territories, as well as first administrative level disaggregations for 22 countries, from 1990 to 2019. Because GBD is highly standardised and comprehensive, spanning both fatal and non-fatal outcomes, and uses a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of hierarchical disease and injury causes, the study provides a powerful basis for detailed and broad insights on global health trends and emerging challenges. GBD...
