, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
In recent years, it has been interesting to to use nanodiamond (ND) in oreder to improve mechanical and electrical properties. Producing it in very low dimensions, make it more important to treat ND surface proportional to its application. Hence, with knowledge of influence of ND and its functional groups on curing process, in present research, carboxylic acid and amine were settled on its surface and in addition to untreated ND, they were dispersed in DGEBA epoxy as a reinforcement. Afterward, by adding triethylenetetramine kinetic cure of nanocomposites were investigated. For this purpose, conversion was determined using heat flow of reaction and then activation energy was calculated....

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Preparation of binary polyamide 6 (PA6) / carbon nano tube (CNT) and ternary PA6 / EPR-g-MA / CNT has been carried out using melt mixing. Four PA6s were selected with different viscosities (and molecular weights) and molecular structures (linear or branched). Effect of CNT content (up to 2 wt%) and mechanical mixing conditions (rotor speed, temperature and time of mixing) have been investigated. Ethylene- propylene rubber grafted maleic anhydride (EPR-g-MA) was selected at 20 wt% as toughening agent for ternary nanocomposites and mixing sequence of PA6 , EPR-g-MA and CNT has been investigated. Morphological observations showed that dispersion of CNT is done by erosion mechanism at low melt...
Impermeability of Oxygen in Passive/Active Polyethylene Nanocomposite Films
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, polyethylene films made of LDPE / LLPE / reinforced with mechanical barrier of clay and reactant of iron nanoparticles were made in their optimal combination and necessary improvements were made on them. Investigations show that, independent of volume fraction, the addition of spherical nanoparticles does not have much effect on reducing the polymer matrix’s permeability. In nanocomposites containing cylindrical particles, for considerable reduction of the permeability, over 20 volume percent of nanoparticles it is required, while in platelet nanoparticles, less than 10% vol is sufficient. In clays with modifier concentration above the cation exchange capacity, there is less...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) is one of the most efficient and low cost process in composite industries. In this process, the preform is covered by a flexible vacuum bag and resin flows into the mold with applying vacuum pressure at the vent. The main objective in VARTM process is preventing voids and dry spots formation in final composite part because these defects may significantly deteriorate the mechanical properties of a structure. Flow front is an important parameter in this process which have a high influence on the void formation. Resin flow control is required to prevent dry spots or micro voids during the VARTM process. In general, the flow control is classified...

Abstract
Taghizadeh Manzari, M. (MehrdadThe main goals of this project are studding the effect of carbon nanotube on the properties of PA6/PA66 matrix and miscibility of PA6/PA66 blend. So PA6/PA66/CNT nanocomposites were compounded by melt mixing method and samples were prepared by injection molding. Due to study miscibility of PA6 and PA66, we used DMTA test and found that PA6 and PA66 are miscible because of existing one pick on DMTA graph. Also DSC test results confirmed that PA6 and PA66 are miscible. Moreover, according to DMTA results, modulus will be rose by increasing CNT content. Mechanical test showed same results in this case. Adding 1%CNT to matrix caused 10% improvement in modulus and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Gholami, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Sajjadi, Ali Akbar (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Kinetics and mechanism of 4,4-dicyano-5-ethyl-1,5-heptadiene rearrangement reaction, a pericyclic type reaction, were studied with ab initio calculations in gas and solution phases. This reaction is one of the cope rearrangement in which secondary kinetic isotope effect is observed. Theoretical study on these reactions showed that probability of radicalic mechanism is inconsiderable and reaction proceeds through out a concerted mechanism with cyclic transition state. Isotope effect was studied by replacement of H1, H2 and H4,H5 with deuterium. The isotope effect data confirmed the concerted mechanism. Solvent effects on this reaction were studied by CPCM model. Solvation energies at...

To determine the effective anti-amyloid compounds in natural products, Borage leaves was chosen. The plant extract was extracted using soxhlet and applied to hen white egg...
Influence of Microstructure on Mechanical Properties and Fracture Behavior of Hybrid PP/GF/CaCO3 Composites
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ekrami, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Homo-polymer of Polypropylene is a commodity thermoplastic with good physical and mechanical properties along with fair recyclability and cost. However, its application is limited in some cases, especially in automotive industry, due to a lack of toughness. One of the approaches for PP toughening is the copolymerization of PP with some ethylene co-monomers. However, existence of elastomers in this kind of polymers causes a decrease in tensile properties. Besides, glass fibers improve tensile properties of homo-and co-PP and decrease toughness of co-polymers but result in an increase for homo-polymers. A rise in expenditure of energy due to increasing the processing temperature and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
The Curing of thick thermoset parts of composites Experience substantial temperature overshoot, especially at the center of those thick parts and large temperature gradient exists through the whole part due to large amount of released heat, thickness and low conductivity of the composite.this leads to non-uniformity of cure, residual stress and consequently composite cracks and possibly degradation of the polymer. In this thesis, first a thick cubic geometery of glass/epoxy composite is modeled with the help ofa commercial CFd packageand sensitivity to different effective parameters of this process is investigated with the help of this model. This model is then substituted by a trained...
Torsion Reduction of 3D In-Filled Frames Using Dampers Under Near Field Motions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Tabeshpour, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
The pervious Iranian seismic code has not considered the ductility parameter in the seismic design of (steel) structures. , therefore; seismic vulnerability and retrofit of existing steel structures is becoming a vital engineering problem. Common ways of seismic retrofit such as adding a shear wall or bracing the structure cause huge forces in elements and foundations. Rehabilitation on the foundation has many constructional problems and leads to long down time. As far as known, the Infill Walls increase the lateral stiffness of frames and lead to reducing the period of the structure. Therefore, to have a reliable design, it is important to consider the effects of Infill Walls. It can be...

Abstract
The increasing utilization of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) in industrial and consumer products has raised concern to wastewater treatment utilities, due to its antimicrobial activity. In this research, recovery of silver nanoparticles from wastewater via using activated carbon and convert it into usable nanoparticles is presented. real waste of silver nanoparticles have been used and activated carbon as adsorbent has a high absorption recovery for silver. Under the optimized experimental parameters e.g. pH, temperature, time of process, and amount of activated carbon, an absorption maximum was achieved and over than 99% of silver nanoparticles can be removed from wastewater. After the...

Abstract
Knot theory is the study of ambient isotopy classes of compact 1–manifolds in a 3-manifold. In classical knot theory this 3-manifold is R3 or S3. This field has experienced a great transformative advances in recent years because of its strong connections with and a number of other mathematical disciplines including topology of 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds, gauge theory, representation theory, categorification, morse theory, symplectic geometry and the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves. In this thesis we start with classical knot theory, introducing some of its (classical) invariants like unknotting number, Seifert genus and slice genus of a knot, knot group and finally Alexander Polynomial...

Abstract
Offshore platforms are one of the most important structures in oil-rich countries, so that their economic benefit makes it very expensive to stop their usage. Therefore, it is essential that their performance is not disrupted by earthquake or the tidal waves made by severe storms. In the conventional bracing systems, it is assumed that the braces buckle under compressive forces; but Buckling Restrained Brace (BRB) does not buckle under pressure. In this study performance of BRB in jacket platform, with a case study of Resalat platform, has been investigated under earthquake load and powerful wave. The modeling of jacket equipped with this brace has been done in Abaqus software, and results...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Tabeshpour, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In past few decades researchers and engineers have researched extensively on the effects of masonry infill walls in structural frames and the effects of masonry infill walls on the structural response was a concern for them. Since used materials and therefore the strength and stiffness of these walls are extremely depends on construction site and available mate-rials, according to geographical conditions most of countries inserted their own rules for considering effects of masonry infill walls in their codes and standards. Our country, Iran was not excepted from this regularity and in past few years the effect of existence of ma-sonry infill walls in structural response has been considered...
Structural Assessment and Rehabilitation of Jacket Platform Structures with Regard to Remaining Life
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Tabeshpoor, Mohammad Reza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, a novel approach for assessment and rehabilitation of offshore platform structures will be introduced, which is based on the fatigue analysis. Although fatigue is not a limiting criteria for platforms having natural periods bigger than two seconds, some of this platforms may be susceptible to fatigue due to their specific design. In addition, fatigue analysis can be an effective solution in cases like assessing the efficiency of structural control instruments under platform’s operational loads, and in its life. The main merit of this approach is that it can model the exact behavior of various damper devices and show their influence on the fatigue life. In fact, control...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Tabeshpour, Mohamad Reza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Offshore platforms are one of the most important structures in oil-rich countries, so that their economic benefit makes it very expensive to stop their usage. Therefore, it is essential that their performance is not disrupted by earthquake or the tidal waves made by severe storms. The new high performance semi-active bracing system, developed by Golafshani et al, is capable of removing the permanent drift of stories at the end of excitation and concentrating structural damage in braces. In the conventional bracing systems it is assumed that the braces buckle under little compressive forces; but in this new presented completely tensile-ribbed bracing system (RBS), buckling of compressive...
