    Abstract
In the last few years there has been growing interest in the use of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) for brain mapping. To decode brain patterns in fMRI data, we need reliable and accurate classifiers. Towards this goal, we compared performance of eleven popular pattern recognition methods. Before performing pattern recognition, applying the dimensionality reduction methods can improve the classification performance; therefore, seven methods in region of interest (RDI) have been compared to answer the following question: which dimensionality reduction procedure performs best? In both tasks, in addition to measuring prediction accuracy, we estimated standard deviation of...

    Abstract
Thermodynamics of extraction of Zn2+ from sulfuric acid media contacting to a mixture of DEHPA and MEHPA diluted with 80 wt% aromatic - aliphatic kerosene with a constant DEHPA to MEHPA ratio is investigated at different acidities, concentrations and temperatures. As a result, the extraction reaction is found to be endothermic with a zinc distribution factor that increases with increasing of the temperature, acidity of the solution and the concentration of the extradant. The mechanism of the extraction reaction is shown to be different for pH > 1 with that at pH <1. The pH of the aqueous media has also an important influence on progressing of the extraction reaction

Thermodynamics of extraction of RE O4 - from aqueous sulfuric acid media with Tri-n-butyl phosphate dissolved in kerosene

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B: Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2001 , Pages 5-10 ; 10735615 (ISSN) Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Rhenium distribution between Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) dissolved in kerosene and sulfuric aqueous media is investigated under different temperatures, acidities, and TBP concentrations. Results show an exothermic extraction reaction with a distribution factor that decreases with the increase of the temperature and increases with the increase of the acidity and the TBP concentration. The stoichiometry of the reaction indicates neutralization of 1 mole of H+ with 1 mole of ReO4- and solvating of a neutral molecule with four molecules of TBP. The structure of the complexes formed is, therefore, 4TBP · HReO4. The apparent Gibbs free energy of the formation of 4TBP · HReO4 from TBP, ReO4-, and...

In particular, the effects of Na diffusion on the films' mechanical properties were examined. TiO2 photocatalyst films, 330 nm thick, were prepared by dip-coating using a TiO2 sol, and were annealed between 100 °C and 500 °C. Film's morphology, physical and nanomechanical properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential thermo-gravimetric analysis, and nanoindentation. Contrary to expectations, the maximum film hardness was achieved for 300°C annealing, with a value of 0.69 ± 0.05 GPa....

Extraction of ZN, MN and CO from ZN-MN-CO-CD-NI containing solution using D2EHPA, Cyanex® 272 and Cyanex® 302

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 183-192 ; 1728-144X (ISSN) Darvishi, D ; Haghshenas, D. F ; Alamdari, E. K ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Effects of pH, D2EHPA, Cyanex® 272 and Cyanex® 302 on extraction of zinc, manganese and cobalt from a Zn-Mn-Co-Cd-Ni containing solution at the room temperature was comprehensively investigated. Addition of Cyanex® 302 indicated a left-shifting-effect on the extraction curve of zinc, a right-shifting-effect on the extraction curve of manganese and no effect on the extraction of cobalt. Addition of Cyanex® 272 shifted all three curves to the right. Therefore, the most suitable extractant for separation of zinc from manganese was therefore 0.3-0.3 mixture of D2EHPA and Cyanex® 302, and that for separation of manganese from cobalt was pure D2EHPA. The stoichiometric coefficient for the...

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 88, Issue 1-4 , 2007 , Pages 92-97 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Darvishi, D ; Haghshenas, D. F ; Etemadi, S ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Sadrnezhaad, Kh ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Water adsorption by bis-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) during the extraction of zinc, cobalt and nickel using a D2EHPA-kerosene/H2O mixture is investigated. Based on the experimental results, about 1 mol of water is adsorbed by 2 mol of D2EHPA (which exists in the form of a dimer), irrespective of the pH. Water adsorption decreases with presence of zinc, cobalt and nickel. The stoichiometric coefficients of D2EHPA in water adsorption reactions are determined with and without zinc, cobalt and nickel by applying the slope-analysis method. It is experimentally confirmed that 1.0, 1.8 and 1.2 mol of adsorbed water will be rejected from the organic phase when zinc, cobalt and nickel are...

Synergistic effect of Cyanex 272 and Cyanex 302 on separation of cobalt and nickel by D2EHPA

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 77, Issue 3-4 , 2005 , Pages 227-238 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Darvishi, D ; Haghshenas, D. F ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Halali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Synergistic effects of Cyanex 272 mixed with D2EHPA and Cyanex 302 mixed with D2EHPA were investigated for the separation of cobalt and nickel from a dilute sulfate media with the aim of reducing the reagent cost. Selective extraction of cobalt over nickel improved with respect to D2EHPA, but worsened with respect to Cyanex 272. By the application of the slope analysis method, the stoichiometric coefficient of the extractant was found to be four for cobalt and five for nickel, in a mixture of D2EHPA with Cyanex 302. However, it was four for both cobalt and nickel in a mixture of D2EHPA with Cyanex 272. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) was utilized to examine the...

    Abstract
This study presents an innovative approach for the integration of flood hazard into the site selection of detention basins. The site selection process is conducted by taking into account multiple criteria and disciplines. Hydraulic modeling results derived from stormwater management model are employed by Technique for the Order of Prioritization by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to determine flood hazard score. The score generated by TOPSIS is used in a spatial multi-criteria decision-making site selection framework. Applying the framework, a suitability map is generated in which primary locations for detention basin placement are determined. The method is demonstrated through the...

Conical localization from angle measurements: an approximate convex solution

    Abstract
For several years, a substantial effort has been devoted to the study of 3-D source localization based on 2-D arrays by measuring the well-known azimuth and elevation angles. However, studies on 3-D source localization performed by 1-D arrays are still lacking. Perhaps, the most important drawback in the deployment of a 2-D array structure lies in the fact that it needs a planar space, which might not be available in some applications. This letter concentrates on the problem of 3-D source localization based on 1-D angle measurement provided by a linear array. Different from the traditional 2-D structures where each measurement induces a straight line, each measurement in the 1-D array...

    Abstract
In the present study, the thermodynamics and mechanisms of vanadium extraction by a mixture of bis-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tri-n butyl phosphate (TBP) from sulfate medium were investigated. It was found that the maximum extraction percent of vanadium occurs at pH 1.8 under ambient conditions; this phenomenon was ascribed to the predominant presence of cationic species of vanadium (VO2+) at this pH. Based on the Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrums, the POH bond of D2EHPA was found responsible for the extraction of VO2+ species through a cationic exchange mechanism. Employing the slope analysis method showed that the stoichiometric reaction...

Investigating and Modeling the Combined Effect of Human Factors, Traffic Factors and Route Conditions on Pedestrian Behavior in Crossing Urban Intersections

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zaki Alamdari, Aref (Author) ; Nasiri, Habibollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The results of the conducted research indicate that although there is a period of time for pedestrians to cross the street safely at signalized intersections, some pedestrians cross the street when they find a space between the passing cars even though their traffic light is red. This behavior has caused a great increase in the number of pedestrian accidents. Understanding pedestrians’ behavior can be helpful in reducing these types of accidents. In order to analysis the pedestrians behavior while crossing the street two types of data were collected; a field questionnaires and a concurrent video image recordings of the pedestrians crossing the streets. The 435 questionnaires collected...

Interaction between TBP and D2EHPA during Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co and Ni solvent extraction: A thermodynamic and empirical approach

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 98, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 143-147 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Haghshenas Fatmehsari, D ; Darvishi, D ; Etemadi, S ; Eivazi Hollagh, A. R ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Salardini, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of TBP on the system D2EHPA/kerosense/M2+ with respect to the extraction of some transitional metals. Although the presence of M2EHPA as an impurity in D2EHPA shifts the extraction curves to lower pH, empirical results show that the extraction curves shift to the right due to the addition of TBP and the counterbalance effect of M2EHPA. The results indicate that the equivalent concentration of D2EHPA decreases as a function of concentration of TBP because of the formation of hydrogen bonds between TBP and D2EHPA. Based on this finding, the D2EHPA equivalent concentration was determined by using a modifying factor for TBP...

    Abstract
Flood as a natural disaster causes heavy human and economic losses and social unrests in most areas of the world. As flood control cost and flood damage compensation is a heavy burden over countries' budget, traditional flood design methods are being replaced by more reliable risk-based methods employing comprehensive risk analysis. In this respect, flood damage estimation is an important step in flood control systems design and analysis. In large river basins with complex reservoir systems and various land uses, flood damage estimation is complex, data-intensive, time demanding, and uncertain task requiring an intensive hydrologic and hydraulic analysis. In this study a simple approach is...

Evaluation of the Effects of the Flanges on the Strength and the Failure Modes of Masonry Walls

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Enami Alamdari, Babak (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of the previous studies as well as codes regarding unreinforced masonry walls overlook the effects of perpendicular walls – called flanges – on their behavior; in reality, these transversal walls significantly affect ultimate strength, stiffness, drift capacity, and most importantly the failure modes. In this thesis, numerical finite element modeling was employed in order to investigate the impact of flanges on unreinforced masonry walls subjected to gravity loads and lateral pushover excitation. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis was conducted concerning the effect of different boundary conditions and axial load ratios on failure mode and crack pattern of the flanged walls. First, the...

    Abstract
The hierarchical coexistence of femtocells and macrocells is a promising approach for heterogeneous networks (HetNets), dealing mainly with indoor coverage issues and providing high data rates in cellular networks. As for any HetNet, mobility management with handoff issues on top, should be studied prior to hindering the successful deployment of these networks. The current study introduces a new handoff algorithm in hierarchical macro/femtocell HetNets based on the combination of quality of service metrics for efficient network selection including: received signal strength, co-channel interference level, and outage probability of each of femtocell and macrocell networks. The proposed...

    Abstract
Green iron oxide pellets are indurated with thermal treatment in pelletizing plant to achieve sufficient mechanical properties and to be used in iron-steel industry. In the first stage, the pellets are dried with hot air coming from the firing unit. High heat transfer makes the evaporation rate exceeding the outgoing steam rate from the pellets and as a result, increasing the inner pressure of the pellets and fragment. On the other hand, low heat transfer causes low production rate. Using the related equations and considering the pellets' moisture and porosity and applying the pellets' condition on parameters such as specific heat capacity and heat conductivity, an acceptable standard is...

Synergistic effect of MEHPA on co-extraction of zinc and cadmium with DEHPA

    , Article Minerals Engineering ; Volume 17, Issue 1 , 2004 , Pages 89-92 ; 08926875 (ISSN) Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Moradkhani, D ; Darvishi, D ; Askari, M ; Behnian, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Simultaneous extraction of zinc and cadmium by a mixture of di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid (DEHPA) and mono-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid (MEHPA), and the synergistic effect of MEHPA on co-extraction of zinc and cadmium with DEHPA have been investigated. It was shown that the extraction of zinc and cadmium by DEHPA and/or MEHPA can be increased by an increase of pH. The results also illustrate that the pH0.5 of zinc, by increase in MEHPA from 0.1 to 8 vol%, did not vary significantly while that of cadmium varies from 0.63 to 2.4. In other words MEHPA prevents selective extraction of zinc from aqueous media containing both zinc and cadmium. Studies on the selective separation parameter...

    Abstract
Carbon dioxide miscible flooding has become a popular method for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) because it not only efficiently enhances oil recovery but also considerably reduces green house gas emissions. However, it can significantly cause asphaltene deposition, which leads to serious production problems such as wettability alteration, plugging of the reservoir formation, blocking the transportation pipelines, etc. It is crucial to investigate the effects of different factors on asphaltene deposition. A novel experimental setup was prepared to employ a high-pressure visual cell for investigation of asphaltene deposition on a model rock under typical reservoir conditions. The evolution of...
