A Task Assignment Method to Reduce Aging in Multi-core Processors
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Miremadi, Ghassem (Supervisor)
Abstract
Reducing the size of transistors has dramatically increased the impacts of NBTI, HCI, and EM phenomena in comparison with decade ago. These phenomena are able to have influence on properties of different parts of a chip to make it changed gradually; including threshold voltage of a transistor and electrical conductivity of interconnections. These changes are known as the aging of a transistors that diminish the performance and reliability of a chip. A common reason that plays a significant role in all these phenomena is temperature. The temperature becomes more important when the power density increases per unit area due to decreased size of transistors, which is a trend in multi-core...
Optimum Design of Air Jet Nozzle Preventing Hot Solid Particles Deposition on the Furnace Wall Using Numerical Simulation of Gas-Particle Two-Phase Flow
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Deposition of solid particles present in the process air on the walls of furnaces is one of the challenges in industries. This phenomenon has various causes. For example, in a furnace, the temperature of particles increases as they pass in front of the furnace burners, and due to the softening of the particles, their chances of deposition increase when they collide with the walls. Over time, with the growth of deposited particle layers on the combustion chamber walls, the performance of the combustion system gradually becomes impaired. present research aims to design air jets intersecting with the process air path, with the purpose of reducing the temperature of particles prone to deposition...
An Analysis of Oil Revenues and Monetary and Financial Policies on Iran's Long-term Economic Growth
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In many papers, GDP is used as a measure of economic growth, which is shown to possess a nonlinear structure. The study focuses on the nonlinear Granger causality between liquidity, government spending, oil revenues and economic growth by markov-switching vector autoregressive and markov- switching Granger causality approach for the period of 1369-1397 for Iran. The empirical results from MSAI(2)-VAR(4) suggest that Oil revenues and government spending have a significant impact on economic growth in both regimes. Also, markov- switching Granger causality results are quite different from the traditional Granger causality results, that suggests the nonlinear Granger causality has more...
Design and Fabrication of Brain Spinal Cord Electrodes for Rehabilitation of Rats with Spinal Cord Injuries
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Shanehsazzadeh, Faezeh (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The use of microelectrode arrays in neural networks has offered a wonderful opportunity for evaluating numerous properties and interactions with excitable tissues such as the brain and spinal cord in the laboratory. In neural network applications, microelectrode arrays can be utilized to analyze nerve impulses or interact with neurons. They are either used to record neural data or to stimulate spinal cord nerves. Previous research has revealed that stimulating the spinal epidural region can help restore after spinal cord injuries (SCIs), which is the key to using them in the rehabilitation of living beings, including humans. According to the international campaign for the treatment of SCI...
The use of literary works in an EFL class
, Article Theory and Practice in Language Studies ; Volume 1, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 177-180 ; 17992591 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
English literature has not been considered a useful teaching tool in the EFL classrooms of many non-English speaking countries. This is because teaching L2 largely has been regarded as a matter of linguistics. However, Arthur (2006, p.200) points out, "Through the use of literature, a language learning experience might become at the same time a source of immediate pleasure and satisfaction for the student. This possibility makes literature an appealing teaching device for ESL teachers". Certainly, today's English teaching can have an intimate connection to literary works. Reading literature has a vital role to play in teaching foreign language readers that English is a rich, living language,...
Difference in assessment: Towards a dynamic assessment approach in education
, Article IMSCI 2011 - 5th International Multi-Conference on Society, Cybernetics and Informatics, Proceedings, 19 July 2011 through 22 July 2011, Orlando, FL ; Volume 2 , 2011 , Pages 59-64 ; 9781936338344 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Discouraging the divorce between Language teaching and language testing, dynamic assessment has changed into a strong tool not only for language assessment but also for language development and leaner involvement in the learning process. This study aimed to investigate (a) Iranian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' off-task self-assessment and on-task self-rating of their writing ability and the impact of a dynamic-assessment-based course on the accuracy of their self-assessment and self-rating, and (b) the interrelationships among teacher rating, self-assessment, and self-rating in the writing performance of 22 engineering students taking a writing course as part of an EAP...
The impact of word games on expanding learner's vocabulary knowledge
, Article 4th European Conference on Games Based Learning 2010, ECGBL 2010, Copenhagen, 21 October 2010 through 22 October 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 1-6 ; 9781622767083 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology

2010
Abstract
One of the most difficult aspects of learning a foreign language, particularly in an EFL context, is the retention of vocabulary. Vocabulary learning plays a major role in English language leaner's success. The standard method of presenting up to 20 or more new vocabulary words that students are expected to learn at a given time is not an effective way to help the learners develop vocabulary (Gresten and Baker, 2000). To this end, most ESL/EFL specialists often justify the use of games with reference to the motivation that they can provide for the students. Scholars suggest that many techniques, and word game is one of them. The impact of word game as a reinforcing device on improving...
Characterization of V2O5 Spent Catalyst & Feasibility Study of its Regeneration
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sadrnezhaad, Khatiboleslam (Supervisor) ; Farzami, Faezeh ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
In this study, at first the V2O5 spent catalysts were characterized. The aim was to identifying whether these catalyst may be regenerated. Then, for feasibility study of them, three methods were applied: washing, diffusion and milling the spent catalysts for their subsequent reproduction. A variety of techniques such as XRD, XRF, AAS, TPR and TPO were applied in order to identify factors contributing in vanadium pentoxide catalysts deactivation. The results showed that approximately all of pollutants caused their performance deterioration, while they still have some active phases. Then, the polluted catalysts were washed (their yield increased from 43% to 72.2%). In the underside of the...
Rating EFL Learners' Production of Request and Complaint by Native and Nonnative English Speaking Teachers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemi, Minoo (Supervisor)
Abstract
Among different subfields of pragmatics some have been analyzed meticulously and some seem to be in a more stringent need of investigation. ILP rating is a novel branch of pragmatics studies through which various aspects and process of rating the L2 learners’ pragmatics knowledge are analyzed. Unfortunately, despite its great impact on learning and teaching second language, investigation of L2 raters’ behaviors and criteria has not been explored much. Problems in the process of ILP rating are very critical, as they can easily undermine the fairness of the test. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze overall 100 EFL teachers’ rating criteria (50 Iranian nonnative and 50 American native)...

Abstract
The present work aimed to investigate the frequency of occurrences and proportions of speech acts of complaints and compliments in the four volumes of the course book English Result (Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, and Upper-intermediate), by Mark Hancock and Annie McDonald (2009), published by Oxford University Press. Investigation of the two speech act strategies was based on complaints strategies (Olshtain and Weinbach, 1987) and compliment strategies (Wolfson and Manes, 1981). It was found that the books were rich in terms of the number of the two speech acts, but in presenting them, there were one or two dominant strategies in both cases. Chi-square analysis demonstrated...

Abstract
The present paper is an attempt to evaluate Pacesetter Series (Strange and Hall, 2005), an EFL course book series, in four levels of starter, elementary, pre-intermediate, and intermediate, being currently instructed at several language institutes in Iran. The purpose of this study is to determine the appropriateness of the series in Iranian EFL contexts. Litz (2000) questionnaire was exploited to examine the series thoroughly in all essential aspects. Sixty four EFL teachers rated the series. The results of descriptive statistics indicated that there is an overall consensus among the teachers that Pacesetter rightly addresses the needs of the learners in a communicative curriculum. However,...
EFL teachers' self-efficacy beliefs in teaching literature
, Article International Journal of Literacies ; Volume 19, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 25-36 ; 2327266X (ISSN) ; Pashmforoosh, R ; Sharif University of Technology
2013
Abstract
Teachers' self-efficacy beliefs within a foreign language context are helpful in terms of their own conceptualization of effective language teaching. While Foreign Language (FL) literature has established a modest presence in EFL classrooms, the teachers' self-perceptions of efficacy in literature instruction strategies have gone rather unnoticed. The objectives of this study were to discover the impact of EFL teachers' gender and teaching experience on their perceived capabilities as literature instructors. To this end, 61 EFL teachers completed Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale in Literature (Mills, 2011) and background questionnaire indicating their ability in the pedagogy of literature....
Criteria in the Holistic and Analytic Rating of EFL Learners' Production of Agreement and Disagreement Speech Acts among Non-native English Teachers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemi, Minoo (Supervisor)
Abstract
Conveying a successful message within a language profoundly stems from not only a linguistically appropriate utterance, but also a pragmatically appropriate discourse too. Broadly considering various facets of pragmatics, pragmatic assessment has not been potentially brought into perspective, and, as a result, the literature deserves more comprehensive attention. This study, guided by the principles of mixed methods design, pursued three purposes: to inspect the matches and mismatches, to explore rating variations, and to assess the rater consistency between the holistic and analytic rating methods of agreement and disagreement speech acts in L2 by non-native English teachers. To address...

Abstract
The analysis of raters' comments on pragmatic assessment of L2 learners is among new and understudied concepts in second language studies. To shed light on this issue, the present investigation targeted important variables such as raters' criteria and rating patterns by analyzing the interlanguage pragmatic assessment process of the Iranian non-native English speaking raters (NNESRs) regarding the request speech act, while considering important factors such as raters' gender and background teaching experiences. For this purpose, 62 raters' rating scores and comments on Iranian EFL learners' requests based on six situations of specified video prompts were analyzed. The results of the content...

Abstract
Technology, as a source of instruction, has fulfilled various purposes in foreign language learning environments. During the last decade, Robot-Assisted Language Learning (RALL) has attracted teachers' and researchers' attention due to the look and feel of humanoid robots. However, in the field of pragmatics, studies highlighting the role of RALL have gone relatively unnoticed. To bridge this gap, this study sought to explore the effect of RALL on pragmatic features, including request and thanking speech acts by young Persian-speaking EFL learners. For this aim, 38 preschool children (3 to 6 year-old boys and girls) with no English learning experience were randomly assigned to the RALL (19...

Abstract
Vocabulary knowledge is one of the main building blocks in the process of learning a new language and presents many challenges to language learners. Using computer software and online programs is suggested as possible approaches for overcoming some of these challenges. In the present study, the researcher attempted to study the effect of creating and sharing different sets of online flash cards on the use of vocabulary items among Iranian English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students. Thirty-nine university students in two groups participated in this study (29 males, 10 females). One group were instructed to create online flash cards containing the definitions of words and their synonyms and...
Effective shear modulus of solids reinforced by randomly oriented- / aligned-elliptic multi-coated nanofibers in micropolar elasticity

Abstract
Accurate estimation of the in-plane shear modulus of solids reinforced by nano-/micro-size elliptical multi-coated fibers is the focus of this paper. It is well-known that at the scales comparable to the nanoscopic length scales of the material, traditional theory of elasticity ceases to hold and, moreover, due to lack of consideration of such length scales has an innate weakness of sensing the size effect. Therefore, it is proposed to formulate and calculate the effective shear modulus of the nano-/micro-composite within micropolar theory which introduces two material characteristic lengths into the field equations. For this purpose, Mori-Tanaka theory is extended to treat nested...
