Abstract
Background An automated instrument tracking procedure was designed and developed for autonomous control of a cameraman robot during laparoscopic surgery. Material and methods The procedure was based on an innovative marker-free segmentation algorithm for detecting the tip of the surgical instruments in laparoscopic images. A compound measure of Saturation and Value components of HSV color space was incorporated that was enhanced further using the Hue component and some essential characteristics of the instrument segment, e.g., crossing the image boundaries. The procedure was then integrated into the controlling system of the RoboLens cameraman robot, within a triple-thread parallel...

Abstract
This paper presents an optimal control strategy for optimal trajectory planning of mobile robots by considering nonlinear dynamic model and nonholonomic constraints of the system. The nonholonomic constraints of the system are introduced by a nonintegrable set of differential equations which represent kinematic restriction on the motion. The Lagrange's principle is employed to derive the nonlinear equations of the system. Then, the optimal path planning of the mobile robot is formulated as an optimal control problem. To set up the problem, the nonlinear equations of the system are assumed as constraints, and a minimum energy objective function is defined. To solve the problem, an indirect...

Abstract
Assistant robots are widely used in laparoscopic surgery to facilitate the camera holding and manipulation task. A variety of a hands-free operator interfaces have been implemented for user control of the robots, including voice commands, foot pedals, and eye and head motion tracking systems. This paper proposes a novel user control interface, based on processing of the laparoscopic images, that enables the robot to automatically adjust the view of the laparoscopic camera without disturbing the surgeon's concentration. An effective marker-free detection method was investigated to track the instrument position in the laparoscopic images in real time so that the robot could center the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Laparoscopic surgery is a branch of minimally invasive surgery that is implemented in the abdominal cavity. This kind of surgery is conducted using surgical instruments that are inserted into the abdomen through some small incisions created on its wall and the necessary vision is provided for the surgeon using a laparoscope lens that is inserted through the first created incision. In recent years, because of its advantages, controlling and manipulation of the lens is done using some robots instead of surgeon assistant. To facilitate the controlling procedure of these robots for the surgeon, several controlling modes such as keyboard, foot switch, and voice commands are presented. Robolens is...

Abstract
Purpose: The accuracy of pedicle screw placement during image-guided spine surgery (IGSS) can be characterized by estimating the target registration error (TRE). The major factors that influence TRE were identified, minimized, and verified with in vitro experiments. Materials and methods: Computed-tomography- compatible markers are placed over anatomical landmarks of lumbar vertebral segments in locations that are feasible and routinely used in surgical procedures. TRE was determined directly for markers placed on the pedicles of vertebra segments. First, optimum selections of landmarks are proposed for different landmarks according to the minimum achievable TRE values in different...
Energy and Economic Analysis of Vertical Farms Considering Solar Energy Utilization and CO2 Enrichment
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roshandel, Ramin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Given the growth of the world's population along with the increase in the percentage of urban population by 2050, the way of responding to food consumption will change in the future. Controlled Environment Agriculture will largely account for future food supply. Vertical Farming is one of these systems. But despite the efficiency of these systems in terms of land and water and also not being affected by weather conditions, the main challenge in these systems is the consumption of energy use per unit of crop production. The cost of energy is about 25 to 40 percent of the total costs. The purpose of this study is to develop an integrated dynamic model for the determination of vertical farm...

Abstract
Ultrasonic testing is a robust non-destructive evaluation method frequently employed in the health monitoring of concrete structures. Cracking in concrete can be one of the most critical problems, and its healing is important for structural safety. The current study proposes the evaluation of crack healing in geopolymer concrete (GPC) using different linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques. In this regard, a notched GPC beam was constructed at the laboratory and geopolymer grout was applied as a repair material. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and signal waveform tests were performed at several stages before and after grouting the notch. Nonlinear wave signals were processed in the...
Effect of predeformation and heat treatment conditions in the SIMA process on microstructural and mechanical properties of A319 aluminum alloy
, Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 468, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 130-135 ; 09258388 (ISSN) ; Khalifehzadeh, R ; Keyvan, H ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
In this study the influences of predeformation and heat treatment conditions on stress-induced melt activating process (SIMA) of A319 aluminum alloy were investigated. At 30% of predeformation a dominant globular structure of grains was obtained. However, further increasing of the predeformation rate considerably reduced the shape factor. The holding time of 10-15 min at semi-solid temperature of 580 °C was suggested in order to prevent grain growth. Coarsening of the grains by excess time or temperature of heat treatment reduced the tensile strength of the alloy. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghaemian, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The goal of this research is to study the effect of local microcracking due to step by step pressure loading on the durability properties of geopolymer concrete. To better understand the behavior of GGBS-based GPC under different pressure stress levels, some experiments such as water permeability and water absorption conducted on the samples at each state of damage. Also, non-destructive tests such as ultrasonic waveform and pulse velocity (UPV) was used to quantify the extent of damage at each step. GGBFS and a blend of sodium silicate solution and 10 molar sodium hydroxide solution with SSSH⁄ ratio of 2 were used for production of GPC samples. GPC, OGPC and OPC samples with water to binder...

Abstract
The configuration of landmarks is an important issue in minimizing the target registration error (TRE). In this paper the effect of different landmark configurations on the accuracy of pedicle screw placement during image guided spine surgery (IGSS) is investigated. Since the spine is deformed in intra-operative conditions compared to the preoperative situation, an accurate alignment of each vertebra is crucial to compensate for the deformation. CT compatible markers are placed over anatomical landmarks which are feasible and routinely used in surgical procedures. The TRE is obtained directly for the markers which are placed on the right and left pedicle of the vertebra. The estimated TRE...
Copper(II) acetate
, Article Synlett ; Volume 23, Issue 13 , 2012 , Pages 1995-1996 ; 09365214 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
(A) Chakraborty and co-workers have developed a green method for the bulk ring-opening polymerization of lactides in the presence of Cu(OAc)2 as a good catalyst to synthesize polymers with different end-terminal groups.3 These polymerizations are highly controlled leading to the formation of polymers with the expected number of average molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution. (B) Garden and co-workers have found that the oxidative addition of anilines with 1,4-naphthoquinone to give N-aryl-2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinones can be performed in the presence of catalytic amounts of copper(II) acetate.4 All the reactions are generally more efficient in that they are cleaner, higher...

Abstract
In mathematical programming, an important tool is the use of active set strategies to update the current solution of a linear system after a rank one change in the constraint matrix. We show how to update the general solution of a linear system obtained by use of the scaled ABS method when the matrix coefficient is subjected to a rank one change. © Australian Mathematical Society 2004

Abstract
Synthesis of dextran-graft-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) gels as a new fluoride biosorbent was considered in this work. For this propose, the Taguchi experimental design method was used for optimizing the synthetic conditions of the gels to reach high level of fluoride absorbency. The effects of three main parameters including concentrations of monomer (hydroxyethyl methacrylate), crosslinking agent (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), and initiator (ammonium persulfate) on the final properties of the prepared gels were investigated. The proposed mechanism for grafting and chemically crosslinking reactions was proved with equilibrium water absorption, Fourier-transformed infrared, scanning...

Abstract
A novel biopolymer-based superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized through chemical crosslinking by graft copolymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid onto the hydrolyzed collagen, in the presence of a crosslinking agent and a free radical initiator. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis reaction based on the swelling capacity of the hydrogels. This method was applied for the experiments and standard L16 orthogonal array with three factors and four levels were chosen. The critical parameters that have been selected for this study are crosslinker (N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide), initiator (potassium persulfate), and monomer...
A Semantic-Aware Authorization Model Based on Deontic Logic
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Jalili, Rasoul (Supervisor)
Abstract
Semantic technology provides an abstraction layer above existing computational environments, especially the Web, to give information a well-defined meaning. Moving toward semantic-aware environments imposes new security requirements. One of the most important requirement is the authorization and security policy inference based on the existing semantic relationships in the abstract (conceptual) layer. Most of the authorization models proposed for these environments so far are incomplete and their inference rules are not guaranteed to be consistent, sound, and complete. To have a sound and complete system for policy specification and inference, in this thesis, a family of modal logics, called...
Deterministic Compressed Sensing
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor)
Abstract
The emerging field of compressed sensing deals with the techniques of combining the two blocks of sampling and compression into a single unit without compromising the performance. Clearly, this is not feasible for any general signal; however, if we restrict the signal to be sparse, it becomes possible. There are two main challenges in compressed sensing, namely the sampling process and the reconstruction methods. In this thesis, we will focus only on the deterministic sampling process as opposed to the random sampling. The sampling methods discussed in the literature are mainly linear, i.e., a matrix is used as the sampling operator. Here, we first consider linear sampling methods and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahlooji, Hashem (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sampling is so deep-rooted in our habits that it usually takes place unconsciously. A large number of books and articles have been published in this field. The connection between sampling and quality control is the reason that many industries have focused their attention on sampling; however, only a few numbersare familiar with bulk material sampling related issues. Describing this theory along with its seven errors is the main object of this research. Using this theory, characteristics of the lot of interest was analyzed. Creating necessary conditions for assuring sampling correctness is very critical and if these conditions cannot be provided, implementing some part of the theory issues...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bagherzadeh, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In nature, catalysis is of vital importance in a wide variety of biochemical processes catalyzed by metalloenzymes. The functions performed by the metalloenzymes and their significance have inspired a range of biomimetic studies, and intense efforts have been concentrated on the synthesis of low molecular weight complexes to model the spectroscopic features of such enzymes. Concomitantly, a challenging frontier in the field of biomimetic chemistry is the development of highly reactive model compounds that are able to effect rapid and selective substrate conversion. Some important catalytic transformations that have gained attention in recent years involve the carbon-carbon coupling, olefin...
Database Schema Extraction Prevention Through DBMS Error Handling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Amini, Morteza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays large volume of sensitive data of organizations are stored in the databases. Thus, databases are attractive to the attackers to execute different types of attacks with different purposes. The useful information that attackers try to achieve in the preliminary steps of the attacks against the databases, is the database structure or schema. One of the popular approach to extract the schema of a database is to analyze the returned error messages from its DBMS. Hence, a solution to prevent schema disclosure via the error messages is customizing and modifying them. To achieve this goal, in this thesis, we propose a framework to handle and customize the error messages automatically and...
