    Abstract
Three-dimensional biocompatible porous structures can be fabricated using different methods. However, the biological and mechanical behaviors of scaffolds are the center of focus in bone tissue engineering. In this study, tricalcium phosphate scaffolds with similar porosity contents but different pore morphologies were fabricated using two different techniques, namely, the replica method and the pore-forming agent method. The samples fabricated using the pore-forming agent showed more than two times higher compressive and bending strengths and more than three times higher compressive moduli. Furthermore, a thin layer of agarose coating improved the compressive and bending strength of both...

John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Background: Autonomous grasping of soft tissues can facilitate the robotic surgery procedures. The previous attempts for implementing auto-grasping have been based on a simplistic representation of the actual surgery maneuvers. Method: A generalized three-zone grasp model was introduced to consider the effect of the pull force angulation on the grasp mode, that is, damage, slip, or safe grasp. Also, an extended auto-grasping algorithm was proposed in which the trigger force is automatically controlled against the pull force magnitude and direction, to achieve a safe and secure grasp. Results: The autonomous grasping experiments against a varying pull force in a phantom study indicated a good...

Design and Implementation of an Auto-Grasping Algorithm for a Robotic Laparoscopic Instrument

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amirkhani, Golchehr (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this project is to design and implementation of the tissue auto-grasping algorithm for a wristed laparoscopic instrument. In this algorithm, the difference between the pinch forces of two jaws was taken into account when the pull force direction corresponding to the rod instrument direction was changed. The term ‘Tissue auto-grasping’ means automatic adjustment of the pinch force corresponding to the pull force exerted on the tissue by the robotic surgical instrument, so that slip and exerting excessive force on the tissue are prevented. In this study, obtaining the pinch force is based on the proximal force-sensing technique. For this reason, the force model of wristed...

    Abstract
The performance of cellular solids in biomedical applications relies strongly on a detailed understanding of the effects of pore topology on mechanical properties. This study aims at characterizing the failure mechanism of scaffolds based on nodal connectivity (number of struts that meet in joints) and geometry of the pores. Plastic models of scaffolds having the same relative density but different cubic and trigonal unit cells were designed and then fabricated via three dimensional (3-D) printing. Unit cells were repeated in different arrangements in 3-D space. An in-situ imaging technique was utilized to study the progressive deformation of the scaffold models. Different nodal...

    Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is one of the most common hematologic malignancies among children, caused by uncontrolled growth of leukocytes. Since the main hallmarks of the disease is not specific, a considerable number of patients have been being misdiagnosed. Early diagnosis of the disease is usually made by morphological investigation of leukocytes under microscope. In light of the facts that decrease in cytoplasm-to-nucleus ratio is one of the main indicators of cancerous cells, and an accurate segmentation phase will lead to extraction of representative features, segmentation step is acknowledged as being crucial in design of a computer aided diagnosis (CAD). Previous researches have...

    Abstract
Background: Burns are caused by a variety of mechanisms, including flames, hot liquids, metallurgy, chemicals, electric current, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The most significant burn wound management involves complete repair and regeneration as soon as possible while minimizing infection, contraction, and scarring in the damaged tissue area. Some factors such as delivery of nutrients, growth factors, and oxygen are essential to promote and stimulate the wound healing progress in the burns area. When these factors are not provided, the burn wound undergoes a physiological crisis. The use of growth factors is a promising approach to overcoming this limitation. Umbilical cord blood...

Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition Using Bag of Words

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amirkhani Najafabadi, Mohammad (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
New applications of gesture recognition problem have emerged that are constrained by lack of sufficient training data. Bag-of-words methods are attractive in this type of scenario and have come to attention again. A typical bagof-words system has four stages: feature extraction, dictionary learning and feature coding, pooling, and classification. The dictionary learning and feature coding stage is important due to its effect on classifier complexity and the discriminative capability of the features that affect the final result. Existing methods in gesture recognition have neglected the relation between different gestures when learning a dictionary. In this thesis, we focus on the relations...

    Abstract
Peer-to-peer networks (P2P) are beginning to form the infrastructure of future applications. One of the problems with unstructured P2P networks is their scalability limitation. This is also the problem in structured P2P networks that use broadcasting to find objects. These networks can't contain a large number of nodes because of the large amount of traffic that they have to handle. Local indexing is a method to reduce this traffic. But local indexes tend to become large with the growth of the network. Also limiting the size of these indexes causes loss of indexing information. In this paper we introduce a novel ontology based local index which limits the size of the local indexes without...

Quantifying correlations between allosteric sites in thermodynamic ensembles

    , Article Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation ; Volume 5, Issue 9 , 2009 , Pages 2486-2502 ; 15499618 (ISSN) McClendon, C. L ; Friedland, G ; Mobley, D. L ; Amirkhani, H ; Jacobson, M. P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Allostery describes altered protein function at one site due to a perturbation at another site. One mechanism of allostery involves correlated motions, which can occur even in the absence of substantial conformational change. We present a novel method, "MutInf", to identify statistically significant correlated motions from equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Our approach analyzes both backbone and side chain motions using internal coordinates to account for the gear-like twists that can take place even in the absence of the large conformational changes typical of traditional allosteric proteins. We quantify correlated motions using a mutual information metric, which we extend to...

    Abstract
Haptic training simulators generally consist of three major components, namely a human operator, a haptic interface, and a virtual environment. Appropriate dynamic modeling of each of these components can have far-reaching implications for the whole system's performance improvement in terms of transparency, the analogy to the real environment, and stability. In this paper, we developed a virtual-based haptic training simulator for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery by doing a dynamic characterization of the phenomenological sinus tissue fracture in the virtual environment, using an input-constrained linear parametric variable model. A parallel robot manipulator equipped with a calibrated force sensor...

    Abstract
In this paper, a nonlinear controller, which can be updated online by means of fuzzy logic, has been proposed for tracking the trajectory of a car-like robot. The advantage of this control scheme is that it eliminates the effects of model disturbances and uncertainties, which cannot be avoided; and especially when we consider the difficult task of determining the exact kinematic and dynamic models of car-like robots. The proposed approach comprises a robust nonlinear section that uses the sliding mode control and a fuzzy section that can update, online, parameters of the nonlinear controller. The stability and the error convergence of the closed-loop system are verified through the Lyapunov...

    Abstract
Learning a foreign language encompasses a process of trial and error that can lead to the progression of the learner's interlanguage, meaning that the learners make use of their language knowledge that receives feedback and brings about progress through diagnosis of the problems and being corrected by the teacher. Therefore, there exists a need to analyze the underlying reasons causing the students to remain taciturn with a low willingness to communicate (WTC) during a language class. There has been much work done investigating the role of the learner's stable personal characteristics (traits) along with their situational changes at a specific time (states) that influence the student's...

    Abstract
Using 3-D scanned data to analyze and extract pore network plays a vital role in investigation of porous media's characteristics. In this paper, a new simple method is developed to detect pores and throats for analyzing the connectivity and permeability of the network. This automated method utilizes some of the common and well-known image processing functions which are widely accessible by researchers and this has led to an easy algorithm implementation. In this method, after polishing and quality control of images, using city-block distance function and watershed segmentation algorithm, pores and throats are detected and 3-D network is produced. This method can also be applied on 2-D images...

    Abstract
Uncertainty is a critical factor in medical datasets needed to be overcome for increasing diagnosis efficiency. This paper proposes an intelligent classification algorithm comprising a fuzzy rule-based approach, a harmony search (HS) algorithm, and a heuristic algorithm to classify medical datasets intelligently. Two fuzzy approaches, as well as orthogonal and triangular fuzzy sets, are first utilized to define the attributes of data. Then, an HS algorithm is integrated with a heuristic to generate fuzzy rules to select the best rules in the fuzzy rule-based systems. Moreover, to improve the performance of the proposed classification approach, a three-phase parameter tuning approach is...

    Abstract
Shared hosting is a kind of web hosting in which multiple websites reside on one webserver. It is cost-effective and makes the administration easier for websites' owners. However, shared hosting has some performance and security issues. In default shared hosting configuration, all websites' scripts are executed under the webserver's user account regardless of their owners. Therefore, a website is able to access other websites' resources. This security problem arises from lack of proper isolation between different websites hosted on the same webserver. In this survey, we have examined different methods for handling mentioned security issue. Also we evaluated the performance of mentioned...

    Abstract
The major section of the city of Tehran, Iran has been developed on cemented coarse-grained alluvium. This deposit consists of gravely sand to sandy gravel with some cobbles and is dominantly cemented by carbonaceous materials. In order to understand the mechanical behaviour of this soil, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests and unconfined compression tests were performed on uncemented and artificially cemented samples. Portland cement type I was used as the cementation agent for preparing artificially cemented samples. Uncemented samples and lightly cemented samples (1.5% cement) tested at high confining pressure showed contractive behaviour accompanied with positive excess pore...
