Design and Fabrication of an Ejector Refrigeration Cycle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arabzadeh, Amir (Author) ; Hakkakifard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to 18000 MW power consumption of cooling systems from the total Iranian electricity consumption in 2016 and hitting a new peak in 2017, the need for finding other alternatives that consume less electrical energy is inevitable. Hence, instead of buildings new power plants, only to meet the demand at the peak of power consumption, using new solutions to reduce consumption seems more beneficial. One way to reduce consumption is to switch to ejector refrigeration systems. One of the main advantages of these systems is their ability to cooling using low-grade waste energies or solar energy (as a heat source below 80℃). However, in absorption systems, the minimum temperature of the heat source...

    Abstract
One of the most important processes in the early stages of construction projects is to estimate the cost involved. This process involves a wide range of uncertainties, which make it a challenging task. Because of unknown issues, using the experience of the experts or looking for similar cases are the conventional methods to deal with cost estimation. The current study presents data-driven methods for cost estimation based on the application of artificial neural network (ANN) and regression models. The learning algorithms of the ANN are the Levenberg–Marquardt and the Bayesian regulated. Moreover, regression models are hybridized with a genetic algorithm to obtain better estimates of the...

    Abstract
Ever-increasing development and growth of information volume is an unprecedented phenomenon. Analyzing and saving such enormous volume of information calls for innovative ideas capable of processing and managing this information. One of the successful projects in this regard done by Apache is known as Hadoop.Hadoop is a popular open-source implementationof MapReduce processing schemefor analysis of large datasets. The heart of Hadoop is MapReduce that is a parallel programming model for data processing on clusters. To handle storage resources across the cluster, Hadoop employs a distributeduser-level filesystem. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is written in Java and is designed for...

Spontaneous Order of Market and Institutional Challengaes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arabzadeh Jamali, Hamzeh (Author) ; Mirjalili, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hayek is one of the most impressive figures of Austrian School of Economics established by Carl Menger. The Thinkers of this school of thought believed that governments should not intervene in the market process. They argued that such interventions would spoil the market performance in resource allocation. Hayek believes that the order which emerges from the market is a spontaneous one; it means no one has designed it, but it has evolutionarily evolved by distinctive agents' actions who had no plan to make it. Hayek's arguments for spontaneous order are based on some epistemological presuppositions such as: "methodological individualism", "methodological subjectivism", "tacit knowledge" and...

In optimizing...

Domain Dependent Regularization in Online Optimization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arabzadeh, Ali (Author) ; Jafari Siavoshani, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
As application demands for online convex optimization accelerate, the need for design-ing new methods that simultaneously cover a large class of convex functions and im-pose the lowest possible regret is highly rising. Known online optimization methods usually perform well only in specific settings, e.g., specific parameters such as the diam-eter of decision space, Lipschitz constant, and strong convexity coefficient, where their performance depends highly on the geometry of the decision space and cost functions. However, in practice, the lack of such geometric information leads to confusion in using the appropriate algorithm. To address these issues, some adaptive methods have been proposed...

Analysis and Countermeasure of Android Malware Generation Using Adversarial Example Generation Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arabzadeh, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Amini, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The widespread use of the Android operating system has made it an attractive target for attackers. In the field of malware identification and mitigation, the use of machine learning methods has seen significant advancements due to their ability to identify unknown malware. One of these methods is graph-based techniques in constructing malware detection systems, which have achieved high success rates in identifying malware. However, machine learning methods suffer from the vulnerability of being misled by adversarial examples. One important aspect in both malware detection systems and adversarial attacks is the limitations imposed on software modification. Any changes made to the application...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel framework for modeling temporal events with complex longitudinal dependency that are generated by dependent sources. This framework takes advantage of multidimensional point processes for modeling time of events. The intensity function of the proposed process is a mixture of intensities, and its complexity grows with the complexity of temporal patterns of data. Moreover, it utilizes a hierarchical dependent nonparametric approach to model marks of events. These capabilities allow the proposed model to adapt its temporal and topical complexity according to the complexity of data, which makes it a suitable candidate for real world scenarios. An online inference...

New attractor states for synchronous activity in synfire chains with excitatory and inhibitory coupling

    , Article Biological Cybernetics ; Volume 86, Issue 5 , 2002 , Pages 367-378 ; 03401200 (ISSN) Yazdanbakhsh, A ; Babadi, B ; Rouhani, S ; Arabzadeh, E ; Abbassian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
In a feedforward network of integrate-and-fire neurons, where the firing of each layer is synchronous (synfire chain), the final firing state of the network converges to two attractor states: either a full activation or complete fading of the tailing layers. In this article, we analyze various modes of pattern propagation in a synfire chain with random connection weights and delta-type postsynaptic currents. We predict analytically that when the input is fully synchronized and the network is noise free, varying the characteristics of the weights distribution would result in modes of behavior that are different from those described in the literature. These are convergence to fixed points,...

Recurrent poisson factorization for temporal recommendation

    Abstract
Poisson Factorization (PF) is the gold standard framework for recommendation systems with implicit feedback whose variants show state-of-the-art performance on real-world recommendation tasks. However, most of the previous work do not explicitly take into account the temporal behavior of users which is essential to recommend the right item to the right user at the right time. In this paper, we introduce a Recurrent Poisson Factorization (RPF) framework that generalizes the classical PF methods by utilizing a Poisson process for modeling the implicit feedback. RPF treats time as a natural constituent of the model, and takes important factors for recommendation into consideration to provide a...

    Abstract
Poisson factorization is a probabilistic model of users and items for recommendation systems, where the so-called implicit consumer data is modeled by a factorized Poisson distribution. There are many variants of Poisson factorization methods who show state-of-the-art performance on real-world recommendation tasks. However, most of them do not explicitly take into account the temporal behavior and the recurrent activities of users which is essential to recommend the right item to the right user at the right time. In this paper, we introduce Recurrent Poisson Factorization (RPF) framework that generalizes the classical PF methods by utilizing a Poisson process for modeling the implicit...

(Ali) ; Meghdari, Ali ; Vossough, Gholam Reza ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...

Design and Construction of a Soft Actuated Exoskeleton for Hand Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi Zadehgan, Ali Akbar (Author) ; Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is the design and development of a rehabilitation device for helping patients “to improve blood circulation” & retain and recover their abilities if possible that were lost during the stroke or a accident like that (my research in karaj/iran shows that it is possible by just movement of the specific body part). The focus is on hand in this thesis because Injuries to the hand are common and can be very debilitating since our hands are our primary means for interacting with our world. For rehabilitation in case of human hand there are several practices that should be done for patients either in home or in a rehabilitation center, time and money that is supposed to...

    Abstract
In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.
In this thesis, result of ambient vibration test on shaking table system (solid deck, concrete foundation and soil layer) has been presented. Precise sensors known as low frequency and high accuracy accelerometers have...

    Abstract
Mechanical ventilation (MV) can result in long-term brain impairments that are resistant to treatment. The mechanisms underlying MV-induced brain function impairment remain unclear. Since nasal airflow modulates brain activity, here we evaluated whether reinstating airflow during MV could influence the memory performance of rats after recovery. Rats were allocated into two study groups: one group received rhythmic air-puff into the nasal cavity during MV and a control group that underwent ventilation without air-puff. During MV, air-puffs induced time-locked event potentials in OB, mPFC and vHPC and significantly increased the oscillatory activity at the air-puff frequency. Furthermore, in...
