Abstract
Nanocrystalline Al-4 wt% Cu alloy reinforced with nanometric Al2O3 particles was synthesized by in situ reactive milling of Al and CuO powder mixture. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to study the mechanically induced solid state reaction between the blended powders. The mechanical milling stages were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), bulk density measurement and laser particle size analyzer. It was shown that the reaction between Al and CuO occurs progressively as the mechanical milling continues, leading to formation of nanoscaled alumina particles. The grain refinement of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sattari, Sourena (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent decades, due to economic, political and environmental issues, tend to use of the CHP systems (combined heating and power) have increased. CHP systems not only increase energy efficiency, but also decrease fuel consumption and emission levels of systems. The use of CHP technology in the industry has a long history, but the use of these systems in the commercial and residential sector, is considered, recently. As to the residential buildings, both electricity and thermal energy demands fluctuate seasonally and hourly, so it is necessary to take account of the plant’s annual operational strategies for the variations of load demands. In this paper, a nonlinear programming model is...
Expounding the Meaning of Time in Evolutionary Process
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
The question of the time is one of the obscure and challenging subjects which has been discussed as a mysterious problem in various civilizations. In ancient Greece, the question has been debated among the supporters of existence and eternity. We observe the words of Plato, on the existence of the absolute essence of eternity against the change and transition time instantiated as a conducted river in the Heraclitus view. Other discussions focused on the relationship between the change and displacement, or the the spatial relations to which Aristotle paid attention. With the passing of time from the ancient and medieval eras to the Renaissance period, along with the growth of the science in...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghotbi, Siros (Supervisor) ; Khodadadi, Abbasali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this project was to upgrade and reduce viscosity of heavy oils by adsorbing of asphaltene on Ni-Mo/CB and converting it into lighter and more valuable gas and liquid compounds. Asphaltene has been extracted from a heavy crude oil sample of Soroush oil field in Iran. After adsorption, Asphaltene conversion to lighter components (gas/liquid) was studied through hydrocracking process. To prepare the support of catalyst, Carbon Black, initially a thermal treatment step under the argon gas atmosphere followed by acid-washing process was performed. Afterward, the catalysts was prepared through dry impregnation method. In order to activate catalyst for hydrocracking, the catalysts has...
In Silico Designing and Docking Evaluation of the Small Lectins to Inhibit Falciparum Attachment to the Midgut Epithelium of Anopheles Mosquito
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Raaz, Abbasali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The parasite entering into the blood of a malaria infected individual eventually causes the formation of gametocytes inside the blood cells. With the insect bite, the male and female gametes will enter the insect's stomach and form the zygote. After developing in the stomach, the zygote first turns into an ookinete and then into an oocyst, and by passing through the stomach wall and tearing the sporozoites, it enters the salivary glands of the insect, and if another person is bitten by that insect, the parasite enters the body of that person. and this cycle continues between the insect and the human body. Stopping this cycle requires blocking one part of this cycle. Studies show that...
Effect of predeformation and heat treatment conditions in the SIMA process on microstructural and mechanical properties of A319 aluminum alloy
, Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 468, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 130-135 ; 09258388 (ISSN) ; Khalifehzadeh, R ; Keyvan, H ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
In this study the influences of predeformation and heat treatment conditions on stress-induced melt activating process (SIMA) of A319 aluminum alloy were investigated. At 30% of predeformation a dominant globular structure of grains was obtained. However, further increasing of the predeformation rate considerably reduced the shape factor. The holding time of 10-15 min at semi-solid temperature of 580 °C was suggested in order to prevent grain growth. Coarsening of the grains by excess time or temperature of heat treatment reduced the tensile strength of the alloy. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract
The objective of this work was to gain a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the degree to which porosity influences thermal-fatigue performance and other mechanical properties of A319 aluminum casting alloy over ranges of commercial interest. The number of cycles to failure for each test was recorded. An increase in porosity content caused degradation in thermal-fatigue life and other mechanical properties. The fractographic examinations identified the pores and some intermetallics as the key microstructural features which promote damage and thermal-fatigue crack initiation sites in the specimens. Crack initiation and propagation is expected to occur sooner in regions of higher...

Abstract
Gradual chemical (displacement) reaction between CuO and Al powders during high-energy attrition milling under a high purity argon atmosphere was studied. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to study the solid-state reaction. It was shown that the solid-state reaction occurred during mechanical alloying (MA) and resulted in the dissolution of copper into the aluminum lattice and formation of nanometric alumina particles. The reinforcement particles were mostly distributed at the grain boundaries of Al matrix with an average crystallite size of about 50 nm. In DTA curve of the milled powders, a small...

Abstract
Alkoxides are the most common precursors used for the production of alumina nanopowders. These materials are, however, expensive and corrosive. This paper introduces a new method for the production of alumina nanopowders by rapid cooling of a synthetic caustic sodium aluminate solution (Bayer liquor), followed by calcination in the presence of a surface-stabilizing agent like 1,2-dihydroxy-3,5-benzene disulfonic acid disodium salt (Tiron). The powders produced are characterized by differential thermal analysis, XRD, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller. A nanopowder of α-alumina with an average crystallite size of 27.7 nm and an average...

Synthesis and Electrochemical Characterization of Graphene Based Nanocomposites Containing Iron oxide and Titanium dioxide and Use them as Electrodes in Asymmetric Supercapacitors
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor) ; Faghihi Sani, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Transition metal oxides and carbon based materials (especially graphene) are common electrode materials in supercapacitors. The metal oxide limitation is due to their high agglomeration and low electrical conductivity. On the other hand graphene base materials due to their unique structure as well as high electrical conductivity and high surface area increase energy storage capability. However, chemically produced graphene generally suffers from high agglomeration and re-stacking after removal from the solution and drying, g, which results in reduced electrochemical performance of graphene sheets in supercapacitors. To take full advantage of these two groups of materials, it is expected that...

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanostrips were rapidly obtained during a mild microwave heating method. Applying microwave irradiation to Ca(NO3)2·4H2O/CTAB/Na2HPO4 precursor solution, the HAp precipitation process was occurred directly and without common crystallographic transformations including dissolution and slow recrystallization. The cationic surfactant CTAB was used as a soft template to modify nucleation and growth process. TEM investigations showed that the fabricated nanostrips had a width and length of about 10 and 55 nm, respectively. The X-ray diffraction pattern revealed that the fabricated well-crystallized and high purity hydroxyapatite nanostrips had a pattern similar to the bone...

Abstract
Self-assembled dandelion-like hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a mild template-free hydrothermal process, using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as the surfactant. The obtained dandelion-like HAp nanostructures were between 5 and 8 μm in diameter and were composed of radially oriented nanorods with an average diameter of about 200 nm. The X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the crystalline phase and purity of the synthesized nanostructures. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of the dandelion-like nanostructures was measured to be about 39 m2/g. The results of thermal analysis revealed...
