The Insider Threat: Analyzing and Modeling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amin, Assiabi (Author) ; Hendesi, Faramarz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, most of businesses are becoming computer-based. This trend causes the organizations to become more vulnerable to internal and external threats. Internal threats are done through insiders. Insiders unlike outsiders have capabilities which aid them to easily carry out their illicit activities. Unfortunately, most of research in computer security has focused on the outsider threats, whereas the most damaging is the result of insiders’ illicit activities. This dissertation addresses three primary necessities of the research in the area of insider threat: a consistent definition of insider threat, a classification of types of insider threats, and a classification of vulnerabilities which...

Benefit Segmentation Based on Service Quality Dimensions in Retail Banking in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arjomandi, Faramarz (Author) ; Modarres, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Banks and financial services typically focus on geographic, demographic, socio-economic, and psychological characteristics to segment the market, in spite of the fact that these are not efficient predictors of future buying behavior of customers. In the present study, benefit segmentation has been used to group retail banking customers in relation to their particular attitudes and behavior. In particular, the identification and measurement of the two major dimensions of service quality, process (how the service is delivered) and outcome (what is delivered) have been investigated to better understand of what constitutes service quality from the customer’s viewpoint. In order to derive...

An Intelligent Routing Protocol for Delay Tolerant Networks Using Genetic Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akhavan Bitaghsir, Saeed (Author) ; Hendessi, Faramarz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the dynamic topology of vehicular ad hoc networks, routing of packets in these networks faces a lot of difficulties. The situation will become more challenging when we have to deal with Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) which are also sparse and partitioned and we need to use some vehicles to store the packets and carry them from one partition to another. Despite all these difficulties, by looking through movements of vehicles in an urban environment, we can find out that the topology of the network does not change in a pure random way and we can bring the traffic models of streets into account for having better routing performance. In this thesis, we proposed an intelligent routing...

    Abstract
In this work, a comprehensive survey on the different methods of modeling fluidized beds was done. Finally, the discrete particle method with soft particle approach was selected as the method of modeling the solid phase. For the gas phase, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as the method of modeling is used. In order to verify our simulation results for the solid phase, a simulation of a bed with many particles distributed all around the bed was done. At the first second of the simulation, the gas phase flow was truned off and the particles were falling down. The results obtained with this method were verified with the references. For verification of the gas phase, a 2D bed with the gas...

    Abstract
Blockchain technology brings about an opportunity to maintain decentralization in several applications, such as cryptocurrency. With the agents of a decentralized system operating independently, it calls for a consensus protocol that helps all nodes to agree on the state of the ledger. Most of the existing blockchains rely on Proof of Work (PoW) as the underlying consensus algorithm, resulting in a significant amount of electricity power consumption. Furthermore, it demands the miner to buy specific computation devices. Besides, a protocol to gather the society-related taxes such as public education funding and charities is lacking in existing consensus algorithms. In response, this paper...

    Abstract
Public transport is amongst critical infrastructures in modern cities, especially megacities, home to millions of people. The reliability of these systems is highly crucial for both citizens and service providers. If service providers overlook system reliability, a considerable amount of expenses will be wasted. Several factors such as vehicle failure, accident, lack of budget weather factors, and traffic congestion cause unreliability, among which vehicle failure plays a prominent role. The brake system is the most vulnerable and vital component of a public transportation bus. Brake reliability depends on driver's expertise, component quality, passenger loading, line situation, etc....

    Abstract
Natural disasters threaten the sustainability of electric power supply. This fact highlights the importance of enhancing technological resourcefulness to handle the upcoming events. Once a natural disaster occurs, the most urgent undertaking is to rapidly pinpoint and assess component damages and dispatch the repair crews towards the most critical impaired elements. Practical efforts confirm that utilising a drone, which is an unmanned aerial vehicle, can notably reduce the duration of post-disaster distribution system damage assessment (DA) and increase the resilience of power systems. This study presents an optimisation model to determine the optimal number and type of drones required for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hassanian, Amir (Author) ; Ghofrani , Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor) ; Yousefpour, Faramarz (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Kaveh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Fire is one of the most important events in nuclear power plants which has a large share of total core damage frequency. For example, the core damage frequency in Bushehr nuclear power plant from fire accidents is 6.1E-6/ year which is equivalent to about 63 percent of core damage frequency from all internal accidents. However, due to the unavoidable presence of flammable materials, e.g. Electrical equipment, cables, gas, flammable liquids, …), it is impossible to prevent fires in these plants . Fire at nuclear power plants may be caused directly or indirectly by one or more initiating events, which the following accidents in turn would threaten the safety of the plant. In this project,...

    Abstract
Rate constants, k A, for the aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2-chloro-3,5-dinitropyridine with aniline were determined in different compositions of 2-propanol mixed with hexane, benzene, and 2-methylpropan-2-ol and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([Emim][EtSO4]) with dimethyl sulfoxide at 25°C. The obtained rate constants of the reaction in pure solvents are in the following order: 2-methylpropan-2-ol > dimethyl sulfoxide > 2-propanol > hexane > benzene > [Emim][EtSO4]. Molecularmicroscopic solvent parameters corresponding to the selected binary mixtures were utilized to study the kinetics of a nucleophilic substitution reaction in order to investigate and compare the...

    Abstract
Photocatalytic reduction of p-nitrochlorobenzene was studied over aluminosilicate-based AgBr and AgBr-TiO2 photocatalysts which were prepared and characterized. The photoreaction was performed in the presence of LiBH4, which is a strong reducing agent, in the solution medium. A new mechanism is proposed for reduction of p-nitrochlorobenzene under photocatalytic conditions. The effect of pH, illumination source, LiBH4 concentration, temperature, catalyst dosage, and alcoholic scavengers was also studied. The results showed that the best efficiency was obtained over Ag/AgBr/TiO2/aluminosilicates at natural pH under UV light. We observed that the reaction yield was affected by changing the...

    Abstract
Both frequency and intensity of natural disasters have intensified in recent years. It is, therefore, essential to design effective strategies to minimize their catastrophic consequences. Optimizing recovery tasks, including distribution system reconfiguration (DSR) and repair sequence optimization (RSO), are the key to enhance the agility of disaster recovery. This article aims to develop a resilience-oriented DSR and RSO optimization model and a mechanism to quantify the recovery agility. In doing so, a new metric is developed to quantify the recovery agility and to identify the optimal resilience enhancement strategies. The metric is defined as 'the number of recovered customers divided...

    Abstract
Electricity demand forecast is necessary for power systems' operation scheduling and management. However, power consumption is uncertain and depends on several factors. Moreover, since the onset of covid-19, the electricity consumption pattern went through significant changes across the globe, which made the forecasting demand more challenging. This is mainly due to the fact that pandemic-driven restrictions changed people's lifestyles and work activities. This calls for new forecasting algorithms to more effectively handle these conditions. In this paper, ensemble-based machine learning models are utilized for this task. The lockdown temporal policies are added to the feature set in order...
