, Article Materials Science Forum ; Volume 667-669, 2011, Pages 979-984 ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Seop Kim, Hyoung ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Al6063 powder was subjected to severe plastic deformation via high-energy mechanical milling to prepare ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminium alloy. Uniaxial compression test at various temperatures between 300 and 450 °C and strain rates between 0.01 and 1 s-1 was carried out to evaluate hot workability of the material. Microstructural studies were performed by EBSD and TEM. The average activation energy and strain rate sensitivity of the hot deformation process were determined to be 280 kJ mol-1 and 0.05, respectively. The deformation temperature and applied strain rate significantly affected the grain structure of UFG Al alloy. A finer grain structure was obtained at lower temperatures and...

, Article Journal of Scripta Materialia (Pergamon) ; June 2012, Volume 66, Issue 11, Pages 911–914 ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Kim, H. S ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
We studied the flow stress and microstructural changes of nanostructured Al-6063 alloy produced by mechanical alloying at various temperatures and strain rates. The analysis of flow curves was performed by a constitutive equation, and the stress exponent and activation energy were determined as functions of strain. The deformation mechanisms were elaborated through microstructural observations by electron backscattering diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Coarsening of the subgrains and grain growth upon deformation was monitored and related to the Zener–Hollomon parameter

, Article Journal of Materials Characterization ; January 2013, Volume 75, Pages 108–114 ; Kim, H. S ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
An ultrafine-grained Al6063/Al2O3 (0.8 vol.%, 25 nm) nanocomposite was prepared via powder metallurgy route through reactive mechanical alloying and hot powder extrusion. Scanning electron microcopy, transmission electron microscopy, and back scattered electron diffraction analysis showed that the grain structure of the nanocomposite is trimodal and composed of nano-size grains (< 0.1 μm), ultrafine grains (0.1–1 μm), and micron-size grains (> 1 μm) with random orientations. Evaluation of the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite based on the strengthening-mechanism models revealed that the yield strength of the ultrafine-grained nanocomposite is mainly controlled by the high-angle...

Abstract
Ultrafine-grained (UFG) Al6063/Al2O3 (0.8 vol%, 25 nm) nanocomposite was prepared via powdr metallurgy route. The grain structure of the nanocomposite composed of nano-size grains (< 0.1 μm), ultrafine grains (0.1-1 μm) and micron-size grains (>1 μm) with random orientations. It was found that the yield strength of the UFG nanocomposite is mainly controlled by the Orowan mechanism rather than the grain boundaries. The deformation activation energy at temperature ranges of T <300 ˚C and 300 ˚C ≤T < 450 ˚C was determined to be 74 and 264 kJ mol-1, respectively. At the higher temperatures, significant deformation softening was observed due to dynamic recrystallization of non-equilibrium grain...

Abstract
Nanostructured AA6063 (NS-Al) powder with an average grain size of ∼100 nm was synthesized by high-energy attrition milling of gas-atomized AA6063 powder followed by hot extrusion. The microstructural features of the consolidated specimen were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques and compared with those of coarse-grained AA6063 (CG-Al) produced by hot powder extrusion of gas-atomized powder (without using mechanical milling). The consolidated NS-Al alloy consisted of elongated ultrafine grains (aspect ratio of ∼2.9) and equiaxed nanostructured grains. A high fraction (∼78%) of high-angle grain boundaries with average...
An efficient tabu search algorithm for the single row facility location problem [electronic resource]
, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

Abstract
Sedimentation tanks are designed for removal of floating solids in water flowing through the water treatment plants. These tanks are one of the most important parts of water treatment plants and their performance directly affects the functionality of these systems. Flow pattern has an important role in the design and performance improvement of sedimentation tanks. In this work, an experimental study of particle-laden flow in a rectangular sedimentation tank has been performed. Kaolin was used as solid particles in these experiments. Also, a numerical simulation was developed using the finite volume method with a k-e turbulent model. The results of the numerical model agree well with the...

Abstract
Sedimentation tanks are designed for the settling of floated solids in water. These tanks are one of the most important parts of water treatment plants and their performance directly affects the functionality of these plants. One challenging method for increasing the performance of sedimentation tanks is to use baffles. A useful baffle should be installed in a suitable place with a proper height. In this work, an experimental study of particle-laden flow in a rectangular sedimentation tank has been performed and kaolin is used as solid particles. The effects of baffle configurations on the velocity and concentration profiles along the tank were studied. Sedimentation tank performance was...

Abstract
Abstract: The hot deformation behavior of coarse-grained (CG), ultrafine-grained (UFG), and oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) AA6063 is experimentally recognized though carrying out compression tests at different temperatures (300–450 °C) and strain rates (0.01–1 s−1). Microstructural studies conducted by TEM and EBSD indicate that dynamic softening mechanisms including dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization become operative in all the investigated materials depending on the regime of deformation. Moreover, the high temperature flow behavior is considerably influenced by the initial grain structure and the presence of reinforcement particles. The constitutive and artificial neural...

Abstract
In the present work, hot workability of particulate-reinforced Al6061-20%SiC composite produced by direct hot extrusion technique was studied. Uniaxial hot compression test at various temperatures and strain rates was used and the workability behavior was evaluated from the flow curves and the attendant microstructures. It was shown that the presence of SiC particles in the soft Al6061 matrix deteriorates the hot workability. Bulging of the specimens and flow lines were observed, which indicates the plastic instability during hot working. Microstructure of the composites after hot deformation was found to be heterogeneous, i.e. the reinforcement clusters were observed at the flow lines. The...

Abstract
The microstructure and mechanical properties of the ultra-fine grained (UFG) Al6063 alloy reinforced with nanometric aluminum oxide nanoparticles (25 nm) were investigated and compared with the coarse-grained (CG) Al6063 alloy (∼2 μm). The UFG materials were prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) under high-purity Ar and Ar-5 vol pct O2 atmospheres followed by hot powder extrusion (HPE). The CG alloy was produced by HPE of the gas-atomized Al6063 powder without applying MA. Electron backscatter diffraction under scanning electron microscopy together with transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the microstructure of the milled powders after HPE consisted of ultra-fine grains...

Abstract
A modified plastic yield function is proposed to predict the consolidation behavior of nanostructured metal powders and metal-matrix nanocomposite powders under uniaxial compaction. The validity of the model is verified for nanocrystalline Al6063 (~100nm) alloy reinforced without and with 0.8vol.% Al2O3 nanoparticles (~25nm). The plastic deformation propensity of these powders is analyzed by linear compaction equations. The yield stress of the powder compacts is shown to be influenced by the nano-scale grains and the reinforcement nanoparticles
