Three Dimensional Numerical Simulation of Fresh Water Lens in Small Islands (Case Study: Kish Island)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ataei Ashtiani, Behzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sensitive ecosystem and scarcity of freshwater are the main characteristics of small islands. These islands have small catchments and usually lack tangible surface water resources. As a result these islands are dependent almost entirely on groundwater. Groundwater on small islands usually occurs in the form of a freshwater lens floating on the more dense saline water. The freshwater lens is highly sensitive to various stresses such as drought, pumping, sea tide, etc. Due to the importance of freshwater lens in islands, proper and optimal use of this vital resource should be studied. Kish island`s freshwater lens was three dimensionally simulated using the numerical model SUTRA. The aim was...
Uncertainty Analysis and Inverse Modeling of Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ataei Ashtiani, Behzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Groundwater is the primary source of freshwater in many coastal areas and small islands around the world. The most important hazard to groundwater quality in coastal aquifers is seawater intrusion (SWI) resulting from over pumping, prolonged drought conditions and sea level rise due to climate change impacts. Numerical models of SWI are an important tool in the management of coastal aquifers. However, numerical modeling of SWI is one of the most challenging problems in groundwater hydrology. One of the reasons for the challenging nature of SWI numerical modeling is the relatively large level of uncertainty associated with the estimation of the model input parameters. This study focused on...

Abstract
Complicated theories dominated toward interacting of coastal regions resulted from its nature. Besides of that interference of human activities for acquiring beneficial aspects of shorelines causes environmental considerations to be challenged. One of the main factors for resolving this challenge is to obtain adequate information from hydrodynamic process and sediment regime. In spite of scientific researches that carried out along past three decades for understanding the exact mechanism of along shore sediment transport, it was not fully developed. One of the main reasons of uncertainty for forecasting the sediment regime regarded not exact knowledge of how sediment act in different...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Shokrollahi, Parvin (Supervisor) ; Ataei, Mohammad (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Synthetic polymers have a high capacity to provide and manufacture the pieces used in tissue engineering. However, optimizing the biocompatibility, bioresorbableility and mechanical properties simultaneous with processability of material is complicated and requires a lot of effort at designing different parts of the system. On the other hand, due to existence of secondary bonds (such as metal-ligand coordination or hydrogen bond) supramolecular polymers are able to respond to some stimuli such as temperature, pH, or pressure, which is important in terms of dynamic nature of interaction between the living cells and the external matrix of cell. Recently there have been extensive studies on...

Abstract
Bluff bodies are commonly used to stabilize flames in many high-speed flow applications. V-gutters are one of the most common bluff bodies that are mainly used in ramjet combustors and turbojet or turbofan afterburners for flameholding. Aerodynamic characteristics of flow behind V-gutter has crucial effect on mechanism of flame stabilization, therefore more experimental investigations still seem to be necessary in this area. Particle Image Velocimetry technique which has high temporal and spatial resolution has been used in this research in order to better investigate the structure and dynamics of this unsteady and complex flow filed. Experiments were done on a reference V-gutter in...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Salarieh, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Nejat Pishkenari, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Precise adjustment of orientation is vital in many important applications of satellites. Besides, in order to have sustainable power source and to reduce heavy costs of launching deployable solar arrays with large area to mass ratio are utilized. The vibrations in these flexible parts and attitude dynamics of the main hub influence eachother mutually. Thus, simultaneous attitude and vibrations control is of noticeable significance. In this thesis considering new details such as multi-section solar panels, the governing dynamic partial differential equations (PDE) are derived via Hamilton principle. In order that errors arised from discretized models be eliminated and just using regular...

Abstract
The aim of this paper is developing a new hierarchical model to evaluate and rank the sawability (power consumption) of carbonate rock with the use of effective and major criteria, and simultaneously taking subjective judgments of decision makers into consideration. The proposed approach is based on the combination of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method with TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) methods. FAHP is used for determining the weights of the criteria by decision makers, and then rankings of carbonate rocks are determined by TOPSIS. The proposed method is applied for Iranian ornamental stone to evaluate the power consumption in rock...

Abstract
Insulated rail joints (IRJs) are widely used in signaling and broken rail identification systems. Track deterioration adjacent to IRJ is frequent due to excessive dynamic forces generated at IRJs by the repetitive passage of the ongoing traffic. Hence, they exhibit low service life and are considered high-risk elements and maintained through high standards. With a view to increase operational speed and the annual operational throughput, many improved structural designs have been proposed, of which inclined IRJs are the focus of this paper. To compare noise, vibration, and adjacent sleepers' vertical displacement of square and 30° and 45° cut joints, a series of field tests have been carried...

Abstract
Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a noninvasive, low-cost brain recording tool with high temporal but poor spatial resolution. In contrast, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a rather expensive brain recording tool with high spatial and poor temporal resolution. In this study, we aim at recovering the brain activity (source localization and activity-intensity) with high spatial resolution using only EEG recordings. Each EEG electrode records a linear combination of the activities of various parts of the brain. As a result, a multi-electrode EEG recording represents the brain activities via a linear mixing matrix. Due to distance attenuation, this matrix is almost sparse. Using...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taeibi Rahni, Mohamad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to study the analogy of space-time fluid flow around Earth and to investigate the hydrodynamic forces caused by this fluid on NASA's Probe B satellite. According to recent research, Einstein's and Navier-Stokes equations are the same. The properties of space-time fluid, including equation of state, compressibility, viscosity, flow field around Earth, and the hydrodynamic forces entering Probe B satellite, are unknown. There are two views about the viscosity of space-time fluid. Spherical mass of the three-dimensional spherical sink and the nature of the sphere located in the probe satellite without a spherical solid particle It are considered within this flow....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhian, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present study, the method of direct growth was used to grew bi-metalic MOFs based on cobalt and zinc, as electroactive centers, for preparing electrochemical sensors for the determination of glucose. In comparison to most of the electrochemical sensing platforms based on MOFs for determining glucose, which suffer from some disadvantages like time-consuming synthesis procedures and using hazardous organic solvents, the proposed in-situ growth method is much faster and without any need to toxic organic solvents. Herein, cobalt and zinc-based MOFs were grown on the surface of glassy carbon electrode by the direct and rapid conversion of layered double hydroxide nanosheets intermediates....

Abstract
Food choice is one of the most fundamental and most frequent value-based decisions for all animals including humans. However, the neural circuitry involved in food-based decisions is only recently being addressed. Given the relatively fast dynamics of decision formation, electroencephalography (EEG)-informed fMRI analysis is highly beneficial for localizing this circuitry in humans. Here, by using the EEG correlates of evidence accumulation in a simultaneously recorded EEG-fMRI dataset, we found a significant role for the right temporal-parietal operculum (PO) and medial insula including gustatory cortex (GC) in binary choice between food items. These activations were uncovered by using the...

Abstract
Pump and treat is one of the oldest and mostly used methods in remediation of groundwater. Although this method has been criticized recently, it is still widely be used. The systems typically use one or more extraction and injection wells to hydraulically control the contamination plume. The purpose of studying a pump and treat system is to determine the appropriate location and discharge for the wells in the way that the contamination could be pumped out. In this study after reviewing some existing solutions for delineation the capture zone of single well a method to delineate the capture zone for arbitrary located wells is presented. This method can delineate a three dimensional capture...

Abstract
Re-circulating cooling water systems offer the means to remove heat from a wide variety of industrial processes that generate excess heat. Such systems consist of a cooling tower and a heat-exchanger network that conventionally has a parallel configuration. However, reuse of water between different cooling duties allows cooling water networks to be designed in a series arrangement. This results in performance improvement and increased cooling tower capacity. In addition, by the integration of ozone treatment into the cooling tower, the cycle of concentration can be increased. The ozone treatment also dramatically reduces the blow-down that, in turn, is environmentally constructive. In this...
