    Abstract
    In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.

    A Strain Rate Constitutive Model for Fiber Reinforced Concrete Based on Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar Tests

    In this thesis, experimental and numerical investigations are performed on dynamic behavior of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) by split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and penetration tests. In the experimental part, effects of parameters such as quasi-static compressive strength of matrix (36 and 48 MPa), strain rate (3*10-5 up to 100 s-1), type of fibers (crimped steel, hooked-end steel, micro polypropylene and micro polypropylene) and volume fraction of the fibers (0%, 1% and 2%) are studied by employing SHPB apparatus on testing more than 150 specimens.     Abstract
    A coupled experimental-numerical study on shear fracture in concrete specimens with different geometries is carried out. The crack initiation, propagation and final breakage of concrete specimens are experimentally studied under compression loading. The load-strain and the strength of the specimens are experimentally measured, indicating decreasing effects of the shear behavior on the failure load of the specimen. The effects of specimen geometries on the shear fracturing path in the concrete specimens are also investigate.     Dynamic behavior of concrete specimens is investigated experimentally and numerically by split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests. In order to accurately determine dynamic properties of brittle materials such as concrete, specimens should be subjected to particular pulse loading that can be generated by using pulse shapers. Choosing proper pulse shaper dimensions helps to obtain dynamic stress equilibrium, achieve constant strain rate and minimize pulse oscillation in the concrete specimens.     In this paper, the effect of joint separation on the shear behavior of planar non-persistent joints under high normal load has been investigated using PFC2D. Initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from experimental laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models were cross checked with the results of direct shear tests performed on non-persistent jointed physical models.     This paper presents a new procedure for determining the fracture toughness of rock-like specimens using the diametric compression test with the center-cracked horseshoe disk (CCHD) method. Using finite element analysis, a dimensionless stress intensity factor was obtained and a formula was rendered for determining mode I fracture toughness. To evaluate the accuracy of the measurement results produced by the CCHD method, fracture toughness experiments were conducted on the same rock-like material using the notched Brazilian disk (NBD) method.     An Experimental Study of the Effects of Sweep Wing on the Boundary Layer of 2D Wing

    The behavior of boundary layer under the effect of the sweep angle is considered. The measurements were performed by a pitot tube rake. Three models with various sweep angels at angles of attack -2, 0 and 2 degree were tested. Both tip and root of all wings were closed by flat plates in order to prevent the flow to roll-up. However the flow field on the wing was still three-dimensional because of the sweep angle. The velocity on the wing has two components; longitudinal and lateral.     This research attempts to develop the optimal solution for an inventory problem consisting of a single machine which produces items some of which may be defective. We assume that no shortages are allowed and all defective items are to be reworked. Setup cost for rework and waiting time of defectives are considered. This research consists of two different parts. In the first part we consider two different policies where in the first policy in each cycle after the regular production the machine is setup for the rework of defectives of the same cycle.
