However, a third party trying to eavesdrop information from communication channel and treat channel security , quantum cryptography or quantum key distribution (QKD) is the secure communication method which is based on the quantum mechanical principles can...

Angular Momentum Compensation and Sorting of Optical Modes in Optical Fiber

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghorbani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Bahrampour, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Farman, Farnaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electromagnetic field modes have several degrees of freedom, including polarization, orbital angular momentum, and radial order, which can be described by orthogonal modes. By using all the degrees of freedom in communication, the channel capacity can be increased dramatically. With the aim of increasing the capacity and correcting the errors created along the optical fiber, two important issues have been addressed in this thesis. First, the states propagated in the fiber may be disrupted by many unwanted factors and may not be transmitted correctly. Therefore, measures should be taken to minimize the impact of these factors as much as possible or to compensate for their effects. In the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gharebaghi Asl, Fatemeh (Author) ; Hajipour, Sepideh (Supervisor) ; Sinaei, Farnaz (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The processing of brain signals, including the electrocorticogram (ECoG) signal, is widely used in the investigation of neurological diseases. Conventionally, the ECoG signal has frequency components up to the range of 80 Hz. Studies have proven that in some conditions, such as epilepsy, the brain signal includes frequency components higher than 80 Hz, which are called high-frequency oscillations (HFO). Therefore, HFOs are recognized as a biomarker for epilepsy. The aim of this thesis is to review the previous methods of detecting HFOs and to present new methods with greater efficiency in the direction of diagnosis or treatment of epileptic patients. For this purpose, we used the ECoG data...

Optimizing the Balance Between Resolution, Field-of-View and Depth-of-field in Three-dimensional Imaging

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kavehvash, Zahra (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Massoumian, Farnaz (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis a rigorous approach toward systematic quantification of qualitative fea-tures in a three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging is proposed. Incorporating the concepts of sampling rays and sampling points, the first approach is based on geo-metrical optics and quantifies the lateral and depth resolutions of the system within the field-of-view (FOV) and depth-of-field (DOF). The obtained results are justified through experiments. In the next step, the principals of wave optics are employed to measure the lateral and depth resolutions of the system. To this end, the concept of point-spread function is generalized to three-dimensional imaging systems. Through this systematic approach the...

On Proposing New Thought Experiments in Quantum Domain

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Mohammad (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Although quantum mechanics has thrilled a multitude of successes since its birth, it has also generated puzzles that persist to this day. These puzzles are largely connected with the role of measurement in quantum mechanics. Therefore, we are dealing with individual phenomena and that our possibilities of handling the measuring instruments allow us only to make a choice between the different complementary types of phenomena. Within the framework of delayed-choice experiments, the choice between complementary types of phenomena is postponed to the moments after the preparation of system is a superposition state. Regarding the probability theory, we have concluded that the delayed-choice...

    Abstract
In the future smart grids, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are seen as an important means of transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of the main issues regarding to this sort of vehicles is managing their charging time to prevent high peak loads over time. Deploying advanced metering and automatic chargers can be a practical way not only for the vehicle owners to manage their energy consumption, but also for the utilities to manage the electricity load during the day by shifting the charging loads to the off-peak periods. Additionally, an efficient charging schedule can reduce the users' electricity bill cost. In this paper we propose a new practical demand response...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Babak (Author) ; Goodarznia, Iraj (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Instability means that when wellbore is out of circle due to any reasons in which it may be associate with fracture or falling of wellbore wall. Wellbore instability problem in production and exploration wells cause high costs over than 100 million dollars in all over the world in which these costs can be increased to 1 billion dollars so, necessary forecasts for preventing of instability is essential. Up to now, a lot of methods are suggested for investigation of wellbore instability, but in this study, analytical investigation with the help of triaxial tension is considered. Failure criterion and rock behavioral model are two important factors in wellbore stability modeling. In this study,...

Stability of chiral states, role of intermolecular interactions and molecular parity violation

    , Article Computational and Theoretical Chemistry ; Volume 978, Issue 1-3 , 2011 , Pages 84-87 ; 2210271X (ISSN) Bahrami, M ; Shafiee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We study the problem of stability of chiral states, also known as problem of chirality, within the framework of a two-dimensional approximation of a symmetric double-well potential. We show how the symmetry breaking of the potential due to the molecular parity violation can stop the tunneling in a coherent way, accordingly stabilize the chiral states. Then, we use the quantum Brownian motion within a linear Lindblad-type equation to model how the intermolecular interactions make the tunneling incoherent, thus inducing a racemization by dephasing. Finally, we investigate the normal physical conditions where the dephasing racemization does not suppress the effects of the molecular parity...

Tunneling properties of nonplanar molecules in a gas medium

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 84, Issue 6 , 2011 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Bahrami, M ; Bassi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We propose a simple, general, and accurate formula for analyzing the tunneling between classical configurations of a nonplanar molecule in a gas medium, as a function of the thermodynamic parameters of the gas. We apply it to two interesting cases: (i) the shift to zero frequency of the inversion line of ammonia, upon an increase in the pressure of the gas; and (ii) the destruction of the coherent tunneling of D 2S 2 molecules in a He gas. In both cases, we compare our analysis with previous theoretical and experimental results

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Mohsen (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Streaming has some applications in medical and industrial science. This phenomena can increase or decrease efficiency of an acoustic system. Deliberate streaming used to eliminate heat exchanger is an example of desired applications. In the most cases, secondary flow is an undesired issue. Streaming in thermal buffer tube (TBT) of thermoacoustic stirling heat engine (TASHE) has some unwanted effects. The main goal of author is to simulate numerically periodic field in TBT with axisymmetric geometry and study the effects of variating geometry and turbulence on the intensity of streaming. According to inaccessible boundary conditions in TBT of TASHE, firstly, the field is numerically solved...

Exploiting Imprecise Non-volatile Memories for Soft Real-time Embedded Systems to Achieve Low Energy Consumption

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Fahimeh (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Spin-Transfer-Torque-RAM (STT-RAM) has recently been widely accepted as a promising replacement for SRAM technology through the technology scaling due to its high density, zero standby power and comparable-to-SRAM read access latency. However, there are two major obstacles to use STT-RAM, namely, high write access latency and energy. In this study, we propose two approaches to solve these challenges in embedded systems. The conventional latency of the STT-RAM write operation is 10ns and lowering the write latency causes the required write current exponentially increase, leading to a larger memory cell area and a shorter memory lifetime. As the first proposed method, we have assessed the...

Satellite Attitude Determination and Control in Presence of Time Delay

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Somayeh (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Attitude determination and control system (ADCS) design is usually based on using measurements provided by rate gyros or attitude sensors such as Sun, Earth-magnetic, Earthhorizon and star trackers. In many practical scenarios, vector measurements provided by attitude sensors and the corresponding reference vectors are available with time delay while the angular velocity is measured by Gyro without significant delay. Time delay can cause ADCS performance degradation and even instability of the closed-loop system. Due to the nonlinearity of satellite dynamics and kinematics, controller and observer design in presence of measurement delays has its own complexity. Hence, despite its...

    Abstract
Security in mobile handsets of telecommunication standards such as GSM, Project 25 and TETRA is very important, especially when governments and military forces use handsets and telecommunication devices. Although telecommunication could be quite secure by using encryption, coding, tunneling and exclusive channel, attackers create new ways to bypass them without the knowledge of the legitimate user. In this paper we introduce a new, simple and economical circuit to warn the user in cases where the message is not encrypted because of manipulation by attackers or accidental damage. This circuit not only consumes very low power but also is created to sustain telecommunication devices in aspect...

Rigid body attitude control with delayed attitude measurement

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , February , 2015 , Pages 1961-1969 ; 10636536 (ISSN) Bahrami, S ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2015
    Abstract
Time delay in the evaluation of the attitude of a rigid body can significantly hinder the performance of the attitude control system. In this brief, we propose a dynamically smooth control law that guarantees asymptotic convergence of the rigid body attitude and angular velocity to their desired values in the presence of delayed attitude measurement. We assume that the moment-of-inertia matrix of the body is unknown. The control law includes a matrix gain that is computed by solving a delay-dependent and time-varying matrix differential equation. It is shown that the solvability of the matrix differential equation depends on a uniform controllability condition, which can be verified a priori...

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 3 May 2010 through 7 May 2010, Anchorage, AK ; 2010 , Pages 3884-3889 ; 10504729 (ISSN) ; 9781424450381 (ISBN) Bahrami, S ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Time-delay in sensor measurements can be a frequent cause of instability and performance degradation in a robotic system. In this paper, motion tracking of rigid manipulators in presence of constant and known delay in sensors is investigated. By using non-minimal model of a manipulator, a dynamically smooth controller based on the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) approach is proposed which guarantees asymptotic tracking of desired joint angles and velocities in presence of delayed measurements. For a given controller the maximum amount of delay that preserves system stability is computed by solving an LMI optimization and also by numerical simulations, and the results are compared. Finally, a...

Cultural Identity Among Iranian English Language Teachers: A Multi-hase Mixed-Method Researc

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Ava (Author) ; Rezaei, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Teaching a foreign language and its culture implicitly might result in internalizing the foreign culture and identity (Brown, 2001). This might consequently cause cultural identity crisis and loss in a broader sense. As provided by Eslami Nodooshan (1998), considering the importance of cultural awareness raised through cultural studies and its influence on language policy and accordingly language classes provided the ground for this study to investigate the components of Iranian cultural identity, the degree of Iranian EFL teachers’ cultural identity, and the statistically significant difference between the Iranian EFL teachers’ cultural identity with different demographic characteristics....
