    Abstract
We synthesized a titanium dioxide–polyaniline core–shell nanocomposite and implemented it as an efficient sorbent for the needle-trap extraction of some volatile organic compounds from urine samples. Polyaniline was synthesized, in the form of the emeraldine base, dissolved in dimethyl acetamide followed by diluting with water at pH 2.8, using the interfacial polymerization method. The TiO2 nanoparticles were encapsulated inside the conducting polymer shell, by adapting the in situ dispersing approach. The surface characteristics of the nanocomposite were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. After...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Banihashemi, Borzoo (Author) ; Jahangir, AmirHossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
By increasing speed gap between microprocessors and off-chip Last Level Cache, Optimization in Last Level Cache makes improvement in system performance. With development of new generation of multi-core processors and sharing LLC between these cores, the so called issue of Memory Wall has caused an incremental effect of LLC on system performance. There are three approaches to use this memory more efficiently:
    1. Increasing cache capacity
    2. Making cache hierarchical and adding different layers to hierarchy
    3. Improvement of replacement algorithms in cache memory
The first approach has not been used in regard with limitation of technology and growth of access time due to...

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 16, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 1288-1291 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Khazraie, S ; Asvadi, R ; Banihashemi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The progressive-edge-growth (PEG) algorithm of Hu et al. is modified to improve the error floor performance of the constructed low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. To improve the error floor, the original PEG algorithm is equipped with an efficient algorithm to find the dominant elementary trapping sets (ETS's) that are added to the Tanner graph of the under-construction code by the addition of each variable node and its adjacent edges. The aim is to select the edges, among the candidates available at each step of the original PEG algorithm, that prevent the creation of dominant ETS's. The proposed method is applicable to both regular and irregular variable node degree distributions....

    Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2013 reported that more than seven million unexpected losses every year are credited to air contamination. Because of incredible adaptability and expense viability of fibrous filters, they are broadly used for removing particulates from gasses. The influence of appropriate parameters, e.g., the fiber arrangement, solid volume fraction (SVF or α), fluid flow face velocity (mean inlet velocity), and filter thickness (Ix), on pressure drop and deposition efficiency are researched. Furthermore, to study the effects of variation of the laminar flow regime and fiber’s cross-sectional shape on the deposition of particles, only a single square fiber has been...

Effects of temperature and torsion speed on torsional properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering C ; Volume 31, Issue 2 , March , 2011 , Pages 452-457 ; 09284931 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Ban, E ; Banihashemi, P ; Abdolhosseini Qomi, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are excellent candidates for torsional elements used in nanoelectro-mechanical systems (NEMS). Simulations show that after being twisted to a certain angle, they buckle and lose their mechanical strength. In this paper, classical molecular dynamics simulations are performed on single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to investigate the effects of torsion speed and temperature on CNT torsional properties. The AIREBO potential is employed to describe the bonded interactions between carbon atoms. The MD simulations clearly show that the buckling of CNTs in torsion is a reversible process, in which by unloading the buckled CNT in opposite direction, it returns to its...

    Abstract
In continuum mechanics, the constitutive models are usually based on the Cauchy-Born (CB) hypothesis which seeks the intrinsic characteristics of the material via the atomistic information and it is valid in small deformation. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the temperature effect on the stability and size-dependency of Cauchy-Born hypothesis. Three-dimensional temperature-related Cauchy-Born formulations are developed for crystalline structure and the stability and size-dependency of temperature-related Cauchy-Born hypothesis are investigated by means of direct comparison between atomistic and continuous mediums. In order to control the temperature effect, the Nose-Hoover...

    Abstract
Uncertainty is a critical factor in medical datasets needed to be overcome for increasing diagnosis efficiency. This paper proposes an intelligent classification algorithm comprising a fuzzy rule-based approach, a harmony search (HS) algorithm, and a heuristic algorithm to classify medical datasets intelligently. Two fuzzy approaches, as well as orthogonal and triangular fuzzy sets, are first utilized to define the attributes of data. Then, an HS algorithm is integrated with a heuristic to generate fuzzy rules to select the best rules in the fuzzy rule-based systems. Moreover, to improve the performance of the proposed classification approach, a three-phase parameter tuning approach is...

    Abstract
Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and...

    Abstract
The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a rules-based synthesis of the available evidence on levels and trends in health outcomes, a diverse set of risk factors, and health system responses. GBD 2019 covered 204 countries and territories, as well as first administrative level disaggregations for 22 countries, from 1990 to 2019. Because GBD is highly standardised and comprehensive, spanning both fatal and non-fatal outcomes, and uses a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of hierarchical disease and injury causes, the study provides a powerful basis for detailed and broad insights on global health trends and emerging challenges. GBD...
