    In this research, application of the Endurance Time (ET) method in performance-based design of structures with and without consideration of uncertainties is investigated and a practical optimum design procedure is proposed. The ET method is used as an analytical assessment tool because of its capabilities in response estimation with an affordable computational demand. In the first step of the proposed method, ET analysis is implemented in a multi-objective optimum design procedure in order to achieve a set of Pareto optimal designs.     Computational cost is one of the major obstacles for detailed risk analysis of structures. This paper puts forward a methodology for efficient probabilistic seismic loss assessment of structures using the Endurance Time (ET) analysis and the first-order reliability method (FORM). The ET analysis efficiently yields the structural responses for a continuous range of intensities through a single response-history analysis. Taking advantage of this property of ET, FORM is employed to estimate the annual rate of exceedance for the loss components.     A new design methodology based on the total value of structures is introduced. This methodology, namely Value Based Design of structures (VBD), uses the advantages of Endurance Time (ET) method. While prescriptive and earlier generations of performance based design approaches commonly try to find structures with the least initial cost, a design approach to directly incorporate the concept of value in design procedure has been formulated here.     This study investigates whether and how the pursuit of certain commercial business practices such as market orientation and market disruptiveness capability improves both the economic performance and social performance of social enterprises. Based on the empirical data collected from 164 UK social enterprises, our results show that market orientation improves social performance and economic performance simultaneously, whereas market disruptiveness capability improves only the economic performance, not the social performance, of social enterprises.     Coupling of side chain dynamics over long distances is an important component of allostery. Methionine side chains show the largest intrinsic flexibility among methyl-containing residues but the actual degree of conformational averaging depends on the proximity and mobility of neighboring residues. The 13C NMR chemical shifts of the methyl groups of methionine residues located at long distances in the same protein show a similar scaling with respect to the values predicted from the static X-ray structure by quantum methods.     Abstract
    Stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HA) powder was synthesized by wet method using orthophosphoric acid and calcium hydroxide, as raw materials. In this regard, the time-depending changes of the precipitated particles and effects of heating on them were investigated. The as-precipitated and heated powder samples were examined using field emission electron microscopy (FESEM), XRD and Raman spectroscopy methods. The results revealed that the morphology and size of the precipitated particles change in each stage of the process.     Abstract
    The precipitation process considered here, involved the addition of orthophosphoric acid solution to a calcium hydroxide solution. Several parameters such as the effects of atmosphere controlling, pH, adding extra acid solution, the amount of stirring speed, and post-chemical treatment were studied. In order to study the thermal stability of synthesised powders, they were sintered for 2 h at 1200 °C and the as-precipitated and sintered powder samples were examined using SEM, XRD, FTIR and ICP methods.     Very recently, two-dimensional (2D) iodinene, a novel layered and buckled structure has been successfully fabricated (Qian et al 2020 Adv. Mater. 32 2004835). Motivated by this latest experimental accomplishment, for the first time we conduct density functional theory, first-principles calculations to explore the structural, electronic, and optical properties of monolayer, few-layer and bulk iodinene.     Abstract
    We present and analyse light curves of four transits of the Southern hemisphere extrasolar planetary system WASP-4, obtained with a telescope defocused so the radius of each point spread function was 17 arcsec (44 pixels). This approach minimizes both random and systematic errors, allowing us to achieve scatters of between 0.60 and 0.88 mmag per observation over complete transit events. The light curves are augmented by published observations and analysed using the jktebop code. The results of this process are combined with theoretical stellar model predictions to derive the physical properties of the WASP-4 system.     We present in situ whole-field measurements of the temperature field using laser-induced fluorescence in a study of bottom-chilled uni-directional solidification of aqueous ammonium chloride. We utilize a two-color, two-dye, ratiometric approach to address the significant spatial and temporal variations of laser sheet intensity field due to refractive index variations caused by the evolving concentration and temperature fields.     The effect on the thermal parameters of superconducting transition-edge bolometers produced on a single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrate with and without a CeO2 buffer layer was investigated. Metal-organic deposition was used to deposit the 20-nm CeO2 buffer layer, whereas RF magnetron sputtering was applied to fabricate 150-nm-thick superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin film.     Using reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations the influence of intermolecular bridges on the thermal conductivity (λ) in carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles has been investigated. The chosen cross linkers (CH 2, O, CO) strengthen the transversal energy transport relative to the one in CNT bundles without bridges. The results showed that λ does not increase linearly with the linker density. The efficiency of the heat transport is determined by the number of linkers in the direction of the heat flux, the type of the linker, and their spatial ordering.
