Abstract
Online voltage security assessment is necessary to choose appropriate remedial and corrective actions in order to prevent a large-scale blackout. This paper presents a new online voltage security assessment method based on wide-area measurements and decision-tree algorithm. For the predicted load and generation variation scenarios (i.e., a day ahead), the database is obtained using continuation power flow. Moreover, each operating point is labeled as 'secure' or 'insecure' from voltage stability points of view based on WECC voltage security criteria. Decision trees are trained on the subset of the existing data by applying two famous splitting rules and various predictors. Bagging and...

Abstract
This paper presents an adaptive delay compensator (ADC) on the basis of the latest development in wide-area measurement system (WAMS) to cater to varying latencies. The proposed compensator can effectively reciprocate the phase deviation resulting from varying delays to improve the performance of central wide-area damping controller (WADC). The greatest challenge to continuous delay compensation is the uncertainty regarding the inherent robustness of the central controller. The proposed technique provides an opportunity to epitomize the uncertainty retrieved from phase compensated delay. Next, taking the uncertainty into consideration, the mixed H2H∞ synthesis technique is adopted for the...

Abstract
An adaptive wide-area damping controller (WADC) scheme based on gain scheduling (GS) technique and decision tree (DT) approach is presented. For the predefined operating scenarios, several robust controllers are designed, so that each controller performs well within a certain range of load/generation variation and contingencies. Considering the best acting controller in each operating condition as the target of classification, several DTs are trained using stage-wise additive modeling by multiclass exponential loss function (SAMME). The weighted combination of DTs is referred to as additive model DT (AMDT) that is used to interpolate the controller coefficients from phasor measurement unit...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The wide-area damping controller (WADC) has been proposed to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillations. The most challenging deficiencies to make this controller practical are the power system operating condition changes and the inherent time delay of remote signals. They can deteriorate the controller performance and the whole system stability if not properly accounted for in the design procedure. This thesis presents an adaptive delay compensator (ADC) on the basis of the latest development in the wide-area measurement system (WAMS) to cater to varying latencies. The proposed compensator can effectively reciprocate the phase deviation resulting from varying delays to improve the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mozafari, Babak (Supervisor)
Abstract
Online voltage stability assessment is essential for preventing the failure in power systems. Voltage instability in power systems usually occurs in consequence of contingency situations or continuous load increasing or both of them. A new method for online voltage stability assessment using the data acquired from phasor measurement units (PMUs) and offline trained decision trees is presented in this thesis. The index of voltage stability margin (VSM) is used for security assessment and considering WSCC criterion, different operation points are divided in two classes: safe and unsafe. In order to obtain the voltage stability margin and generate the database, a new method which has been named...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Atarodi, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
This thesis deals with the front-End of an Integrated RFID Reader operated in 860MHz to 960MHz, which integrates a RF transceiver including PA, LNA and Mixer. In the receiver part, a power amplifier was fabricated and measured and in the transmitter part, LNA and Mixer were designed. There is a growing interest in utilizing CMOS technologies for RF power amplifiers (PAs). Although several advances have been made recently to enable full integration of PAs in CMOS, it is still among the most difficult challenges in achieving a truly single-chip radio system in CMOS. This is exacerbated by supply voltage reduction due to CMOS technology scaling and on-chip passive losses due to the conductive...

Abstract
Inert gold become catalytically active when dispersed in the form of nanoparticles. Isolated gold nanoparticles have demonstrated high catalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to obtain high catalytic activity, gold nanoparticles are generally dispersed on support materials, among which oxides are commonly used. However, a substantial decrease in activity and selectivity of the immobilized catalysts is frequently observed due to the heterogeneous nature of these support materials in reaction media. In the course of our study on the metal-based catalysis for synthesis of organic compounds, we herein report that rod-shaped Au nanoparticles in aqua solution...

Design and Implementation of Complex Multi-Path Filters
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Atarodi, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In most radio receivers like superheterodyne receivers, a weak desired incoming signal is accompanied with many interferer signals that are much more powerful than the desired signal itself. These interferers, also called blockers, can cause a great disturbance in the functionality of the receiver. Due to gain compression and an increase in the noise figure (NF) of the receiver, the blockers should be filtered before the arrival at the output of the LNA. Because of the low quality factors of the available on chip inductors and in order to eliminate the out of band interferer signals and image frequency (in superheterodyne receivers), usually an external surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter is...
