    Non-statistical Dynamical Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Talebi, Aminosadat (Author) ; Razvan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor) ; Berger, Pierre (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Non-statistical dynamics are those dynamical systems for which a large subset of points in the phase space (positive measure subset) have non-statistical behavior, meaning that the orbit of these points does not have asymptotic distribution in the phase space. We introduce two new classes of these kinds of dynamics: non-statistical rational maps on the Reimann sphere and non-statistical Anosov-Katok maps of the annulus. We then give a general formalization of the notion of "statistical (in)stability" and show how it is connected to the existence of non-statistical dynamics in a general family of maps

Enhanced Waddington landscape model with cell-cell communication can explain molecular mechanisms of self-organization

    Abstract
The molecular mechanisms of self-organization that orchestrate embryonic cells to create astonishing patterns have been among major questions of developmental biology. It is recently shown that embryonic stem cells (ESCs), when cultured in particular micropatterns, can self-organize and mimic the early steps of pre-implantation embryogenesis. A systems-biology model to address this observation from a dynamical systems perspective is essential and can enhance understanding of the phenomenon. Results: Here, we propose a multicellular mathematical model for pattern formation during in vitro gastrulation of human ESCs. This model enhances the basic principles of Waddington epigenetic landscape...

Factors that affect scientific publication in Africa—A gender perspective

    Abstract
A large body of literature on gender differences in scientific publication output has clearly established that women scientists publish less that men do. Yet, no single explanation or group of explanations satisfactorily accounts for this difference, which has been called the “productivity puzzle”. To provide a more refined portrait of the scientific publication output of women in relation to that of their male peers, we conducted a web-based survey in 2016 of individual researchers across all African countries, except Libya. The resulting 6,875 valid questionnaires submitted by respondents in the STEM, Health Science and SSH fields were analyzed using multivariate regressions on the...

Advances in Tensor Analysis with Applications in Text Mining

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sobhani, Elaheh (Author) ; Babaiezadeh, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Comon, Pierre (Co-Supervisor) ; Jutten, Christian (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tensors or multi-way arrays are useful tools to identify unknown quantities thanks to the uniqueness of their decomposition. Tensor decompositions have been widely applied to obtain unknown components with physical meanings in many applications such as medical image and signal processing, hyperspectral images analysis, chemometrics, etc.In this thesis, we investigate the application of tensor decomposition for probability estimations, which are required for some targeted data/text mining tasks such as unsupervised clustering of data/documents. Besides criticizing the existing tensor decomposition algorithms for probability estimations, we propose to apply some proper constrained tensor...

    Abstract
A combination of measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section performed by ATLAS and CMS in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC is presented. The cross-sections are obtained using top-quark pair decays with an opposite-charge electron–muon pair in the final state and with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 5 fb−1 at s = 7 TeV and about 20 fb−1 at s = 8 TeV for each experiment. The combined cross-sections are determined to be 178.5 ± 4.7 pb at s = 7 TeV and 243.3−5.9+6.0 pb at s = 8 TeV with a correlation of 0.41, using a reference top-quark mass value of 172.5 GeV. The ratio of the combined cross-sections...
