Residual Stress Determination of Multi-pass Welding Process, Stress Relieving Procedures and Its Effect on Crack Propagation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most important issues in welding is residual stresses. It is desirable to produce less residual stresses when possible and to reduce them which remain in the structure. At the present, various methods have been developed to reduce the residual stresses. The most important methods are heat treatment, shot peening, and grinding. The main problem in using these methods is cost, and for large structures these methods are often impractical. In recent decades, a technique called vibratory stress relief has been developed. It is used for large structures without limitation of size and weight; besides, the cost of this process is much less in comparison with other conventional methods...

Synthesis and characterization of poly(methacrylates) containing spiroacetal and norbornene moieties in side chain [electronic resource]
, Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 77, Issue 1, pages 30–38, 5 July 2000 ; Mirjalili, Bibi Fatemeh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
A four-step synthetic strategy was applied to achieve novel methacrylic monomers. 5-Norbornene-2,2-dimethanol was prepared from a Diels–Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and acrolein, followed by the treatment of the adduct with an HCHO/KOH/MeOH solution. The resulting 1,3-diol (1) was then acetalized with different aromatic aldehydes having OH groups on the ring to produce four spiroacetal derivatives. The reaction of methacryloyl chloride with the phenolic derivatives led to four new methacrylic monomers that were identified spectrochemically (mass, FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy). Free radical solution polymerization was used to prepare novel spiroacetal–norbornene containing...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Koohi, Sommaye (Supervisor)
Abstract
Based on the importance of DNA/RNA binding proteins in different cellular processes, finding binding sites of them play crucial role in many applications, like designing drug/vaccine, designing protein, and cancer control. Many studies target this issue and try to improve the prediction accuracy with three strategies: complex neural-network structures, various types of inputs, and ML methods to extract input features. But due to the growing volume of sequences, these methods face serious processing challenges. So, this paper presents KDeep, based on CNN-LSTM and the primary form of DNA/RNA sequences as input. As the key feature improving the prediction accuracy, we propose a new encoding...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Matloubi Moghaddam, Firouz (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, using one-pot multicomponent reactions in the synthesis of organic and natural compounds has attracted a lot of attention due to their ideal synthetic features. These types of reactions play an important role in synthetic chemistry by reducing reaction steps, costs, wastes, and by-products and increasing the reaction efficiency as an efficient method. The issue that led to this project was the development of a novel procedure for developing synthetic methods for the synthesis of thioxo-pyrrolidine 3-carbutamide compounds. In this study, the first Mumm rearrangement was performed by using dithiocarbamates by applying ultrasonic irradiation. The reaction was investigated in methanol...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahdavi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Copper-based semiconductors have received a great deal of attention due to their high absorption coefficient, direct and adjustable energy gap with stoichiometry, low frequency and toxicity. Multicomponent nanocrystals such as CuInS2, Cu (In, Ga) (S, Se) 2, Cu2ZnSnS4 and Cu2SnS3 (CTS) have been successfully synthesized by colloidal synthesis and have shown application potentials such as energy conversion, photocatalyst, thermoelectric and biomedical. Among these, the CTS ternary semiconductor with p-type conduction is one of the most well-known compounds of group I-IV-VI, which consists of abundant and non-toxic elements. In this research, thin-film solar cells with FTO / TiO2 / In2S3 / CdS...
Encryption Aware Query Processing for Data Outsourcing
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
Abstract
Data outsourcing provides cost-saving and availability guarantees. However, privacy and confidentiality issues, disappoint owners from outsourcing their data. Although solutions such as CryptDB and SDB tried to provide secure and practical systems, their enforced limitations, made them useless in practice. Inability in search on encrypted data, is one of the most important existing challenges in such systems. Furthermore, the overhead of mechanisms such as FHEs, removes them from considering for any practical system. Indeed, special purpose encryptions would be the only usable mechanisms for such purposes. However, their limited functionality does not support some important required...
Effect of microstructure on crack behavior in nanocrystalline nickel using molecular dynamics simulation
, Article Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 104 , 2019 ; 01678442 (ISSN) ; Farrahi, G. H ; Chamani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The crack growth process in columnar nanocrystalline samples is simulated using the molecular dynamics method. The effects of grain size, grain boundary, crystallographic orientation and crack tip position on the crack growth behavior are investigated. Different sets of samples with mean grain sizes ranging from 4 nm to 14 nm are prepared. Samples with a similar number of grains and identical dimensions are considered for examining the impact of grain boundary and crystallographic orientation. To assess the effect of the grain boundary, no constraint is considered on the position and orientation of grains, while only the grain orientations are changed to examine the effect of...

Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate material properties of nanocrystalline aluminum and nanocrystalline Al/Ni multilayers at low temperature. For this purpose, both single crystal and nanocrystalline multilayers with different grain sizes and grain morphology are used as the substrate. The results of the simulations show that hardness and elastic modulus decrease with refinement of grain size in nanocrystalline aluminum and refinement of grain size and layer thickness in nanocrystalline Al/Ni multilayers, regardless of grain morphology. Furthermore, the angle between two adjacent grains, which is directly connected to the grain boundary thickness, has a great influence...

Abstract
Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the friction behavior of nanocrystalline nickel (Ni) at low temperature. Grain sizes ranging from 4–11 nm are used to explore the behavior of nanocrystalline Ni near the Hall-Petch breakdown. Effects of grain size, grain morphology and scratch depth on coefficient of friction (COF) and deformation mechanism of nanocrystalline Ni are investigated. Reduction of the COF with the refinement of grain size in nanocrystalline nickel is observed, however, for a grain size of 5 nm this trend is observed to be reversed. It is also found that scratch depth can influence the estimation of friction behavior of nanocrystalline...

Abstract
Speech synthesis and its applications have been very attractive recently. The main purpose of this technique is to produce a speech signal with natural characteristics of human speech like prosody and emotion. Among all existing methods for speech synthesis, statistical parametric speech synthesis methods are more promising because ofhigher flexibility in comparison to other methods. One of the applications of speech synthesis is speech to speech translation. In these systems, the generated voice in target language should have the same characteristics as the input voice in source language. The main purpose of this research is to review and evaluate the cross lingual speaker adaptation...

Design of Low-Power Zero Temperature Coefficient (ZTC) CMOS Oscillators
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbar, Fatemeh (Supervisor)
Abstract
The increasing demand for autonomous vehicles and reliable communication protocols and hardware interfaces, such as CAN bus and USB, underscores the necessity for stable clock sources that maintain a low temperature coefficient (TC) over wide temperature ranges. This demand is particularly emphasized in applications such as wearables, network sensors, downhole devices, WSNs, and IoT, where long-lasting battery life and frequency-stable clock sources over a broad temperature range (e.g. -20 °C to 100 °C) are crucial. Traditionally, variations in frequency caused by temperature have been mitigated by employing off-chip components like crystals or ceramic based oscillators, but this approach...

Investigation of Wear Properties of Nanocrystalline through Multiscale Modeling of Nanoindentation and Nanoscratch Test
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nanocrystalline materials have received increasing attention during the last decades. Polycrystalline structures with grain sizes less than 100 nm are referred as nanocrystalline (NC). Their mechanical properties differ significantly from polycrystalline structures. As an example, hardness and wear resistance of nanocrystalline structures are higher than those of polycrystalline structures. With the reduction of grain size, hardness increases based on the Hall–Petch relation. However, at the very small grain sizes the Hall–Petch relation breaks down and a fundamental shift takes place in hardening mechanism. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation offers a powerful method for the investigation of...

Abstract
In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the failure of tube-to-tubesheet welds results in high-pressure water jet which erodes the refractory in front of the tubesheet. Finite element method was employed to simulate the welding process and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the factors affecting the failure in tube-to-tubesheet weldments. Residual stresses in two different geometries of tube-to-tubesheet weldment were calculated through uncoupled thermal-structural analysis. The results showed that the values of residual stresses are higher in heat exchanger of site 1 than site 2 due to more weld passes and geometry of connection. Also, the maximum stress in site 1 occurs at the shellside...

Abstract
A novel and efficient multicomponent reaction for the synthesis of polysubstituted pyrrolidine derivatives is described under catalyst-free conditions using ultrasonic irradiation. The reactions were performed via a one-pot four-component condensation of secondary amines, carbon disulfide, isocyanides, and gem-dicyano olefins at room temperature to afford polysubstituted pyrrolidines diastereoselectively in 56-96% yields. This is the first report of a Mumm-type rearrangement with dithiocarbamates followed by intramolecular cyclization, which leads to the preparation of the key structure of pyrrolidine.
