    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) addition on the morphology as well as mechanical and electrical and shape memory properties of immiscible polystyrene/ethylene octene copolymer (PS/EOC) blends prepared by melt compounding. To prepare PS and EOC blends, weight percent of 80/20 and 50/50, different amounts of CNTs were varied between 0.05 and 1.5 phr. An investigation of the morphology of the PS/EOC blends using scanning electron microscopy revealed that when CNTs are added, the morphology of the blends changes from matrix-droplet to co-continuous. Based on the rheological results, blend nanocomposites exhibited solid-like behavior at low...

    Abstract
Gaseous reduction of manganese ores has been studied as it is beneficial for both understanding the common ferromanganese production process and the development of new processes. Thermodynamics, kinetics, and the mechanisms of reduction by methane have been reviewed, supported by thermodynamic calculations from the commercial HSC Chemistry and FactSage software. While there were similarities in reduction process by CO and H2, methane was a more efficient reductant and yielded reduction levels beyond MnO, which was due to the large thermodynamic driving force for carbide formation by metastable methane. The practical aspects of gaseous reduction by methane, such as application of a...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Cheraghi, Alireza (Author) ; Yoozbashizadeh, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Safarian, Jafar (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Pre-reduction of some manganese sources (low-grade Venrach and Godar-Sabz ores, high-grade Comilog ore, pellet, pure oxide) by methane gas has been investigated in this research. HSC-Chemistry and FactSage software were used for thermodynamic study of the process. Thermodynamic results indicated that methane may progress to manganese carbide formation, and the reduction process can run autonomously involving less carbon dioxide emission comparing to common ferromanganese process. Several techniques including XRF, XRD, in-situ XRD, SEM-EDS, and thermogravimetry were used in sample characterization and experiments. In addition to the thermal decomposition reactions which were affected by...

    Abstract
Characterization and calcination behavior of a low-grade manganese ore, as a part of Mn ferroalloys production, was studied by XRF, ex-situ XRD, in-situ XRD, and SEM-EDS techniques. Calcination experiments were carried out at and up to 900 °C (1173 K) in air and argon atmospheres. The samples were in particles and powder forms. The results indicated that both quartz and calcite phases in the ore exhibit a bimodal spatial distribution; as relatively large regions and finely distributed in the Mn- and Fe-containing phases. By Rietveld analysis of the in-situ XRD data, the reactions occurring upon heating during the calcination process were deduced. Thermal decomposition and reactive diffusion...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Cheraghi, Afshin (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Estimating electricity demand elasticity in different sectors has been an essential research topic. Considering the fact that pricing electricity in various countries does not follow the same rules, many econometrics methods have been developed to estimate this crucial parameter. Electricity demand elasticity is defined as the percent change in electricity consumption in response to one percentage change in electricity price. Having a correct estimate of this parameter would help policymakers to price electricity properly in order to reach desirable goals in electricity consumption optimization and many other aspects of electricity consumption. In Iran, Tavanir Co. which is a subsidiary of...

Low-Temperature Coherence Properties of Z2 Quantum Memory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Cheraghi, Hadi (Author) ; Karimipour, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Memarzadeh Esfahani, Laleh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quantum memory which stores the coherent information of logical qubits, is an essential ingredient of quantum information processings. Each logical basis should be encoded on macroscopically distinct physical states since otherwise the indistinguishability of logical bases is easily destroyed by local errors. On the other hand, the memory must be able to have superposition of macroscopically distinct states of physical qubits. To maintain such superposition is very difficult. First, if the size of the memory is infinite, such macroscopic superposition is impossible since superposition of different phases is just a classical mixture of them in an infinite system. Second, even in finite...

    Abstract
Green iron oxide pellets are indurated with thermal treatment in pelletizing plant to achieve sufficient mechanical properties and to be used in iron-steel industry. In the first stage, the pellets are dried with hot air coming from the firing unit. High heat transfer makes the evaporation rate exceeding the outgoing steam rate from the pellets and as a result, increasing the inner pressure of the pellets and fragment. On the other hand, low heat transfer causes low production rate. Using the related equations and considering the pellets' moisture and porosity and applying the pellets' condition on parameters such as specific heat capacity and heat conductivity, an acceptable standard is...

    Abstract
In the present study, the thermodynamics and mechanisms of vanadium extraction by a mixture of bis-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tri-n butyl phosphate (TBP) from sulfate medium were investigated. It was found that the maximum extraction percent of vanadium occurs at pH 1.8 under ambient conditions; this phenomenon was ascribed to the predominant presence of cationic species of vanadium (VO2+) at this pH. Based on the Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrums, the POH bond of D2EHPA was found responsible for the extraction of VO2+ species through a cationic exchange mechanism. Employing the slope analysis method showed that the stoichiometric reaction...

The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

    , Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

    Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...
