Abstract
In this paper, based on three-dimensional phenomenological model and using a user-defined material subroutine mechanical behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) wire ropes (or cables) and their components have been studied through implicit solution method in Abaqus software. Material parameters have been extracted using available experimental data and numerical simulations. Due to the convoluted geometry and interwire contact status within a cable, a finite element analysis is firstly performed for a 1 × 37 steel wire rope to validate modeling and mechanical interactions of a wire rope. Afterwards, superelastic and shape memory effect cables with different constructions (7 × 7 and 1 × 27) are...

Abstract
TiO2 thin films containing different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles have been synthesized by sol-gel method. According to UV-visible spectra, presence of an intense surface plasmon resonance peak at 490 nm of wavelength indicated formation of silver nanoparticles in the TiO2 films. Based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis, the surface roughness and the effective surface ratio increased by increasing the Ag mol%. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed formation of Ag nanoparticles on the surface for the samples containing high Ag concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the size of Ag nanocrystals increased by increasing the Ag content in...

Abstract
WO3 thin film photoanodes containing different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles were synthesized by solegel method. Based on UV-visible spectra, presence of a surface plasmon resonance peak at 470 nm of wavelength indicated formation of silver nanoparticles in the WO3 films. According to atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis, the highest value for surface roughness and the effective surface ratio was observed for the sample containing 2 mol% of Ag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that WO 3 nanocrystalline structure was formed in the monoclinic phase with the average size of about 18.2 nm while Ag nanocrystals were determined in cubic phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)...

Abstract
Considering hydrogen as a future fuel, development of clean energy sources based on solar power is the main human challenge in recent years. Here, for the first time, Au:WO3 photoanodes are synthesized with different Au concentrations and then applied for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. A comprehensive statistical study on the prepared photoanode surface is conducted to understand the correlation between surface morphology and PEC activity, using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results clearly justified the maximum surface area observed for the film containing 1 mol % Au. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis determined that Au nanocrystals have been formed in cubic...
Backhaul need for speed: 60 GHz is the solution
, Article IEEE Wireless Communications ; Volume 22, Issue 6 , 2015 , Pages 114-121 ; 15361284 (ISSN) ; Fakharzadeh, M ; Choi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The availability of 7-9 GHz of unlicensed spectrum at 60 GHz, advances in low-cost silicon technology, and high interference rejection due to atmospheric loss make 60 GHz an ideal solution for future 4G/5G small-cell backhaul links, where multi-gigabit rates are required. In this article, we review the 60 GHz propagation properties, the practical technology limits, and the regulatory and regional environmental impacts to present a framework for the 60 GHz backhaul link design that translates the link requirements to the essential transmitter and receiver system parameters. This approach includes a preliminary design that generates the input data set for an optimization problem. Two physical...

Abstract
The antisolvent method has been used extensively to induce the growth of high-quality perovskite layers for efficient solar cells. However, uncontrollable nucleation and crystallization increases the risk of formation of undesirable defects. Here, we report a facile way to control the nucleation and crystallization stages in perovskite formation by changing the temperature of chlorobenzene (CB) in the antisolvent method. When CB is injected on the spinning substrate with a precursor solution, CB temperature affects the nucleation process as well as the crystallization process. As the CB temperature increases, nuclei increase in size, leading to the formation of larger perovskite crystals...

Abstract
We propose the structured naive Bayes (SNB) classifier, which augments the ubiquitous naive Bayes classifier with structured features. SNB classifiers facilitate the use of complex features, such as combinatorial objects (e.g., graphs, paths and orders) in a general but systematic way. Underlying the SNB classifier is the recently proposed Probabilistic Sentential Decision Diagram (PSDD), which is a tractable representation of probability distributions over structured spaces. We illustrate the utility and generality of the SNB classifier via case studies. First, we show how we can distinguish players of simple games in terms of play style and skill level based purely on observing the games...
Investigating the impacts of different price-based demand response programs on home load management

Abstract
Application of residential demand response (DR) programs are currently realized up to a limited extent due to customers' difficulty in manually responding to the time-differentiated prices. As a solution, this paper proposes an automatic home load management (HLM) framework to achieve the household minimum payment as well as meet the operational constraints to provide customer's comfort. The projected HLM method controls on/off statuses of responsive appliances and the charging/discharging periods of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery storage at home. This paper also studies the impacts of different time-varying tariffs, i.e., time of use (TOU), real time pricing (RTP), and...
Development of a nodal effective load model considering transmission system element unavailabilities
, Article IEE Proceedings: Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 152, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 79-89 ; 13502360 (ISSN) ; Billinton, R ; Futuhi Firuzabed, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The paper illustrates an extended effective load model including the capacities and uncertainties of generators and transmission lines. The conventional effective load model only considers the uncertainties of generators. An extended ELDC (effective load duration curve) based on the effective load model is proposed in the paper. The proposed nodal ELDC is able to supply information on nodal indices for probabilistic production cost simulation and reliability evaluation at the load points in a power system. It is expected that the effective load model presented in the paper will prove useful in many problems dealing with nodal and decentralised operation and control of electric power systems...

Abstract
Interest in carbon nanomaterials for energy storage systems such as supercapacitors has enormously risen due to their attractive electrical conductivity, chemical inertness, and charge storage capacity. The reduction of graphitic oxide is a versatile procedure to prepare 3D graphene. Despite many green methods, the dynamics behind ultrafast thermal graphitization have remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate an effort to understand the graphitization mechanism of graphitic oxide under ultrafast thermal reduction induced by electromagnetic radiation and probably via Ar+ cation collisions. The low photon energy (10.5 μeV) locally removes oxygen functionalities and restores the π-conjugated...

Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are one of the most promising emerging energy-conversion technologies because of their high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and potentially low fabrication cost. To improve PCE, it is necessary to develop PSCs with good interfacial engineering to reduce the trap states and carrier transport barriers present at the various interfaces of the PSCs' architecture. This work reports a facile method to improve the interface between the perovskite absorber layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) by adding a small amount of acetonitrile (ACN) in the Spiro-OMeTAD precursor solution. This small amount of ACN dissolves the surface of the perovskite layer, allowing the...

Abstract
Microsatellite instability (MSI) refers to alterations in the length of simple repetitive genomic sequences. MSI status serves as a prognostic and predictive factor in colorectal cancer. The MSI-high status is a good prognostic factor in stage II/III cancer, and predicts a lack of benefit to adjuvant fluorouracil chemotherapy in stage II cancer but a good response to immunotherapy in stage IV cancer. Therefore, determining MSI status in patients with colorectal cancer is important for identifying the appropriate treatment protocol. In the Pathology Artificial Intelligence Platform (PAIP) 2020 challenge, artificial intelligence researchers were invited to predict MSI status based on...

Abstract
A novel intelligent semi-active control system for an eleven degrees of freedom passenger car's suspension system using magnetorheological (MR) damper with neuro-fuzzy (NF) control strategy to enhance desired suspension performance is proposed. In comparison with earlier studies, an improvement in problem modeling is made. The proposed method consists of two parts: a fuzzy control strategy to establish an efficient controller to improve ride comfort and road handling (RCH) and an inverse mapping model to estimate the force needed for a semi-active damper. The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...
Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...

Abstract
A suction-controlled ring device has been developed to continuously measure the coefficient of lateral soil pressure in deformable unsaturated soil samples from the at-rest to the active condition under application of increasing vertical pressure and controlled matric suction. The device incorporates a thin aluminum specimen ring equipped with horizontal strain gages for recording the lateral soil strains. In addition, a sensor recording water volume changes is utilized to continuously monitor the degree of saturation of the soil sample during tests. The matric suction within the soil texture is controlled using the axis translation technique. In order to verify the performance of the ring...
Gum tragacanth gels as a new supporting matrix for immobilization of whole-cell

Abstract
We introduce a new smooth, non-toxic, biocompatible method for cross-linking of gum tragacanth (GT), a polysaccharide of natural origin, in order to serve as a new supporting matrix for immobilization systems. The modified gum is used as a matrix for the catalysis of the conversion of benzyl penicillin to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) by means of Escherichia coli ATCC11105 with penicillin G acylase (PGA) activity. The results show that GT beads can not only serve as a proper matrix for immobilization, but show enhanced hydrolysis rate and stability compared to other immobilization systems used for this reaction. This signifies the potential of GT as a biocompatible matrix for...

Abstract
The Class-E power amplifier has been widely studied and formulated in the literature. Although the majority of reported inductive coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) systems use a class-E power amplifier for driving the primary coil, still there is a lack of a comprehensive study on class-E circuit dedicated to WPT, providing a set of closed form design equations for proper class-E operation. This paper presents the required design equations needed to design a 'true' class-E circuit for WPT applications. Equations for the series-tuned secondary coil WPT system are presented, as well as two different design procedures for the parallel-tuned secondary coil. The derived equations have been...
