    Pull-in Analysis of Nano/Micromirrors under Effect of Capillary Force with Consideration Influences of Casimir and Van Der Waals Forces

    Abstract
    In this thesis, pull-in of nano/micromirrors under effects of capillary, Casimir and van der Waals (vdW) forces is investigated based on two models. In the first model, only rotation of torsional beams of mirror is considered. In the second model, effect of bending of the torsional beams is also considered. The static behavior of the mirror under capillary, Casimir and vdW loading are also studied using these models. Results show that neglecting bending effect, can lead to considerable overestimation in predicting the pull-in limits of the nano/micromirrors under these forces.Results reveal that the static behavior of the nano/micromirrors under these forces highly depends on the...

    Abstract
    Parallel micro actuators are mostly fabricated using the wet etching process within which the presence of capillary force and the resulting pull-in instabilities can severely affect the success of the fabrication process. In the case the capillary force is large enough then the beam like structure of the micro actuators is collapsed.     Abstract
    This study investigates influence of fringing field effect on the voltage dependent behavior of electrostatically actuated micro-beams. For this purpose, the size dependent beam model is used. Strain gradient formulation is utilized to consider size effects. The effect of fringing field effect on the beam's behavior is investigated and it is shown that lack of considering the fringing field effect in the formulation of the problem may lead to considerable error in predicting the size dependent micro-beams behavior under the effect of electrostatic actuation. The results of this research can be used for safe and stable design of electrostatically actuated micro-beams

    Abstract
    In the current paper, a general theoretical model for the problem of micromirrors under the effect of capillary forces is presented. The presented model considers the coupling effect between torsion and bending of the torsion beams supporting the micromirror. First, the energy method, the principal of minimum potential energy is utilized for finding the equations governing the micromirror rotation and its deflection.     Abstract
    In this paper, static behavior and pull-in of micro tweezers is studied. The micro tweezer is modelled as two cantilever beams. Static behavior of the micro tweezer under the effect of electrostatic actuation is modelled using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In order to capture size effects on the behavior of micro tweezers, modified couple stress theory is utilized. The principal of minimum potential energy is employed for finding the equilibrium equations governing the deflection and the rotation of the micromirror.     The current paper deals with the problem of static instability of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and van der Waals force. First the governing equations of the statical behavior of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and casimir force is obtained using the newtons first law of motion. The dependence of the critical tilting angle on the physical and geometrical parameters of the nano/micromirror and its supporting torsional beams is investigated.     Laminar forced convection flow through a channel partially filled with a porous material was numerically studied in this thesis. The Navier-Stokes and Brinkman-Forchheimer equations were used to model the fluid flow in the free and porous regions, respectively. Coupling of the pressure and velocity fields was resolved using the SIMPLEC algorithm. The local thermal equilibrium was adopted in the energy equation.
