, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Matloubi Moghaddam, Firouz (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since nanocatalysts have gained particular importance in various fields of chemistry, in this research, nanocatalysts based on metal-organic frameworks were initially made and used for multicomponent reactions, and C-C cross-coupling has been used. ZIF-8@SiO2@Pd, ZIF-67@MPDA, ZIF-8@MPDA, BMZIF@ MPDA catalysts are porous and stable cubic carbon-based catalysts based on nanoparticles. In addition, the product yields were good to excellent for all reactions under mild conditions, resulting from the superior activity of the synthesized heterogeneous catalyst containing cobalt and zinc. Also, these catalysts can be easily separated by a centrifuge and used in the next step without any noticeable...
Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in air. 1. Ceric-Induced synthesis of starch-g-polyacrylonitrile in presence and absence of oxygen [electronic resource]
, Article Starch - Starke ; Volume 54, Issue 3-4, pages 140–147, April 2002 ; Zohurian Mehr, Mohammad J
Abstract
Monomer grafting, a unique technique for polysaccharide modification, is always performed under inert (e.g., N2) atmosphere. This work is the first report related to evaluating the possibility and efficiency of the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) onto starch in presence of oxygen. Thus, corn starch (in both granular and gelatinized states) as well as soluble starch were grafted by AN using a ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. Graft copolymerizations were performed under nitrogen, air, and oxygen atmospheres at similar conditions. Grafting occurrence was verified using chemical and spectral proofs. The polymerization mechanism and kinetics were investigated by recording the...
Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in Air. 2. Ceric-Initiated graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto natural and modified polysaccharides [electronic resource]
, Article Starch - Stärke ; Volume 54, Issue 10, pages 482–488, October 2002 ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, Mohammad J
Abstract
Acrylonitrile (AN) was grafted onto various natural and modified polysaccharides (i.e., gum arabic, gum tragacanth, xanthan gum, sodium alginate, chitosan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose) by using ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. After overcoming practical problems, mainly from the high viscosity of the aqueous solutions of the different substrates, the graft copolymerization reactions were run either in air or in N2 atmosphere under similar conditions. Grafting was confirmed using chemical and spectral (FTIR) proofs. The reactions were kinetically investigated using semi-empirical expressions and time-temperature profiles. An anomalous...

, Article Polymers for Advanced Technologies ; Volume 14, Issue 7, pages 508–516, July 2003 ; Pourjavadi, Ali ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Various natural and modified polysaccharides (i.e. arabic gum, tragacanth gum, xanthan gum, sodium alginate, chitosan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose) were modified using ceric-initiated graft polymerization of acrylonitrile under inert atmosphere. Grafting was confirmed using spectral (FT-IR) proofs. The grafting parameters were determined by conventional methods. Thermal characteristics of the homopolymer-free copolymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen atmosphere. The major thermal transitions as well as the activation energy of the major decomposition stages were...
Novel azo-containing polymethacrylates bearing spiroacetal-norbornene moiety and methylene spacers: synthesis and characterization [electronic resource]
, Article European Polymer Journal ; Volume 37, Issue 10, October 2001, Pages 2111–2121 ; Mirjalili, Bibi Fatemeh ; Entezami, Ali A ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, Mohammad J ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
An eight-step synthetic strategy was followed to prepare a series of novel azobenzene-containing methacrylate monomers bearing spiroacetal-norbornene moiety and methylene spacers. Thus, the adduct 2, obtained from cyclopentadiene and acrolein, was converted to 1,3-diol 3. The diol was acetalized with nitrobenzaldehyde 4 under microwave irradiation to obtain nitro compound 5 that was then reduced to amino compound 6. Diazonium salt of 6 was coupled with phenol to produce phenolic compound 7 which was then reacted with n-dibromoalkanes (n=2, 4, 6, 8, 10) to yield bromo compounds 9a–e. Nucleophilic substitution reaction of the bromo compounds with lithium methacrylate produced the methacrylic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hajilouy Benisi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Diesel engines have widely used in past hundred years. During this time costly and extensive researches have been done to improve engine performance, which is going on. Important issues of these engines are higher specific power and efficiency and lower specific fuel consumption and pollutions formation. One of the best methods for engine performance improvement is matching a convenient turbocharger on engine. A turbocharger increases the engine air mass flow rate by increasing the inlet pressure and density. Due to increase of fresh air mass flow rate, fuel mass flow rate and power would increase. The aim of this research is to choose the convenient turbocharger for the OM355 naturally...

, Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 90, Issue 11, pages 3115–3121, 9 December 2003 ; Mahdavinia, G. R ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, M. J
Abstract
Chitosan was modified with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) through ceric-initiated graft copolymerization. The chitosan-g-PAN product was saponified using sodium hydroxide aqueous solution to prepare a novel superabsorbent hydrogel, H-chitoPAN. Duration of completing the saponification reaction as well as the water absorbency capacity of the hydrogel was decreased with increasing the alkaline concentration. Either chitosan-g-PAN or H-chitoPAN was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and DSC, TGA, and DTG thermal methods. According to FTIR, all the nitrile groups were converted to carboxylate and carboxamide groups. Both modified chitosans exhibited enhanced thermal stability over chitosan. The...
Particle Production: From Inflationary Era to Reheating
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abolhassani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project, in general, we have studied the particle production during and after the Inflation.Today, the Inflation is considered as a part of the standard model of cosmology and it solves so-called two cosmological problems: flatness and horizon problem. According to it,the universe after the inflation becomes supercool; however, the thing we observe today is in contradiction with this theory. The Reheating era is a time period in which the inflationary field gets to its minimum of potential and starts to socialite. Actually, here is the place in which the phenomenon of the particle production occurs. This period is called the Reheating era. therefore, it seems all particles which we...

Abstract
The opinions of other people are an essential piece of information for making informed decisions. With the increase in using the Internet, today the web becomes an excellent source of user's viewpoints in different domains. However, in one hand, the growing volume of opinionated text and on the other hand, complexity caused by contrast in user opinion, makes it almost impossible to read all of these reviews and make an informed decision. These requirements have encouraged a new line of research on mining user reviews, which is called opinion mining. User's viewpoints could change during the time, and this is an important issue for companies. One of the most challenging problems of opinion...

Abstract
In this paper, an approach is proposed to estimate the location of leakages in liquid transmission lines with a high accuracy. First, the mathematical model is analyzed and a closedform solution is provided for the partial differential equations of the pipeline. Next, the leakage location is calculated using the closed-form solution. The calculations are applied to various leakages and are extended to a case in which the pressure and flowrate do not converge to constant values. Considering a singleleakage pipeline system, a linear observer is utilized to estimate the leakage location with reduced errors. The simulation results are presented and the proposed method is verified by changing the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Yaghmaei, Soheyla (Supervisor)
Abstract
Immobilization of β-D-galactosidase represents an important approach for development of lactose hydrolysis technology.Chitosan proved to be an excellent carrier for β-Dgalactosidase immobilization, by both covalent binding and sol-gel entrapment combined with adsorption. Among different preparation methods of chitosan support particles for covalent binding, emulsion cross-linking was the most efficient, producing narrow-sized microspheres, without aggregation. The best process parameters of β-D-galactosidase immobilization by covalent coupling on chitosan microspheres were found as 3% glutaraldehyde cross-linker concentration, enzyme loading of 27 mg protein/g dry support, 6 h reaction time,...
Leak Detection and Location in Oil Transmission Lines by Closed Form Solution and Linear Observer
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this paper, an approach is proposed to estimate the location of the leaks in oil pipelines. The pipeline possesses a system of Partial Differential Equations (PDE). First, a closed-form solution is applied to the pipeline equations and the leakage location is found solving the steady-state equations. To tackle the case where the pressure and flowrate do not reach constant values, the initial estimations are provided by the closed-form solution. Then, the pressures, flow rates, and leakage coefficient are estimated by solving the system of differential equations. This system is then discretized with respect to the location variable to yield the system state equations which, in turn, are...

Abstract
Polyampholyte hydrogels are hydrophilic networks that contain both positively- and negatively-charged functional groups on their structure. Polysulfobetaines are the most important type of polyampholytes, which have been extensively studied. However, these hydrogels exhibited poor gel strength causing limitation of their applications. Consequently, much attention has been focused on the preparation of nanocomposite hydrogels with high gel strength and lower cost using organomodified clays. In this project, Novel polyampholytic superabsorbing nanocomposites based on the zwitterionic sulfobetaine monomer [3-(methacrylamido)propyl)]dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (MPDSAH) were...

Abstract
In this study, a homotopy analysis method was used to obtain analytic solutions to predict dynamic pull-in instability of an electrostatically-actuated microbeam. The nonlinear describing equation of a microbeam affected by an electric field, including the fringing field effect, was obtained based on strain gradient elasticity, couple stress, and classical theory. Influences of different parameters on dynamic pull-in instability were investigated. The equation of motion of a double-clamped microbeam was discretized and solved by using Galerkin's method via mode summation. The resulting non-linear differential equation was also solved by using the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). The influence...
