Study on Effect of Chemical Parameters on Mechanical and Morphological Properties of Biodegradable wo Phase Propylene/Starch Blends
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years the rapid rise of polymer consumption especially in the form of packaging materials became a real menace for the environment. Polyolefin are some of the most dominant packaging materials and responsible by part of the problems in the disposal of one-trip packaging. One of the possible ways of solving this problem is the introduction of additives increasing their susceptibility to environmental degradation into non-biodegradable polymers. One such additive is starch- the natural, cheap, and easily biodegradable polymer. Starch was already used as a filler or as a blend with polyolefin. Addition of dry starch granules to polyolefin follows the general trend of filler effects on...
TIRIAC: A trust-driven risk-aware access control framework for Grid environments

Abstract
The infrastructure provided by a Grid enables researchers to collaboratively solve various research problems through sharing their resources and establishing virtual organizations (VOs). However, the distributed and dynamic nature of a Grid VO is a challenge for access control systems. All users in a VO have responsibilities which correspond to their rights. While they should be able to make use of all VO resources, irresponsibility and permission misuse (insider attack) impose costs and losses on the affected resources. Hence, the history of users' behavior and the possibility of misuse need to be considered in the resource providers' risk management process. In this paper, we propose the...

Abstract
Uncertainty and its imposed risk have significant impacts on decision-making. However, both are disregarded in many trust-based applications. In this paper, we propose a risk-aware approach to explicitly take uncertainty of trust and its effects into account. Our approach consists of a trust, a confidence, and a risk model. We do not prescribe a specific trust model, and any probabilistic trust model can be empowered by our approach. The confidence model calculates the uncertainty of the trust model in the form of a confidence interval, and is independent of the inner-workings of the trust model. This interval is used by the utility-based risk model which assesses the effects of uncertainty...

Uncertainty-Aware Computational Trust
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
Abstract
Trust is a common concept in interpersonal relationships. It is a replacement for strict control mechanisms, helping individuals to have a better estimation of the risks involved in an interaction or relationship. Computational notions of trust have a close relationship with security in computer systems.Different models of trust have been proposed to regulate interactions in: security, collaborative systems, and routing. We focused on two important problems and challenges in this dissertation: proper handling of uncertainty, and uncertainty-aware trust-based decision-making.We propose an integrated approach to modeling, processing, and treating uncertainty, as well as to uncertainty-aware...

Abstract
This paper presents a feature-based license plate localization algorithm that copes with multi-object problem in different image capturing conditions. The proposed algorithm is robust against illumination, shadow, scale, rotation, and weather condition. It extracts license plate candidates using edge statistics and morphological operations and removes the incorrect candidates according to the determined features of license plates. We have formed a rather complete database of 269 images in different conditions. The proposed algorithm successfully detecteds the accurate location of the license plates in 96.5% cases, which outperforms the other available approaches in the literature. © 2006...

Abstract
In the present study, a hybrid microsphere/hydrogel system, consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel incorporating PCL microspheres is introduced as a skin scaffold to accelerate wound healing. The hydrogel substrate was developed using the freeze-thawing method, and the proportion of the involved polymers in its structure was optimized based on the in-vitro assessments. The bFGF-encapsulated PCL microspheres were also fabricated utilizing the double-emulsion solvent evaporation technique. The achieved freeze-dried hybrid system was then characterized by in-vitro and in-vivo experiments. The results obtained from the optimization of the hydrogel showed that...
Grid Resource Discovery Using a Peer-to-Peer Approach
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Resource sharing is the most important feature of a Grid. Resource discovery enables users to find the most suitable resources to run Grid jobs on. Resource discovery systems are often centralized or hierarchical. These structures are usually prone to a single point of failure, and unbalanced distribution of processing and storage load, making them inefficient as the Grid grows. These challenges have led researchers to adapt distributed approaches, such as Peer-to-Peer file sharing solutions. The important differences between Grid resource discovery and P2P file discovery (e.g. different resource attributes, queries, change patterns etc.) make it difficult to port the existing solutions to...

Abstract
Using the skin tissue engineering approach is a way to help the body to recover its lost skin in cases that the spontaneous healing process is either impossible or inadequate, such as severe wounds or burns. In the present study, chitosan/gelatin-based scaffolds containing 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1% allantoin were created to improve the wounds’ healing process. EDC and NHS were used to cross-link the samples, which were further freeze-dried. Different in-vitro methods were utilized to characterize the specimens, including SEM imaging, PBS absorption and degradation tests, mechanical experiments, allantoin release profile assessment, antibacterial assay, and cell viability and adhesion tests....
Investigation of the Seismic Behavior of the Soil-Pile System with Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Modeling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A large number of structures and substructures, such as piles, have damaged or even yielded the entire structure during seismic loading. The kinematic interaction of piles under seismic loading has been widely studied from analytical, experimental, and numerical perspectives. In numerical modeling, most existing literature relies on simplified approaches to describe the soil-pile interaction, which leads to the need for more reliable and comprehensive research. In this research, the seismic response of the soil-pile system was investigated through a fully nonlinear three-dimensional numerical analysis in the time domain using the FLAC3D program. This model simulates the dependence of soil...

Abstract
Blockchain technology brings about an opportunity to maintain decentralization in several applications, such as cryptocurrency. With the agents of a decentralized system operating independently, it calls for a consensus protocol that helps all nodes to agree on the state of the ledger. Most of the existing blockchains rely on Proof of Work (PoW) as the underlying consensus algorithm, resulting in a significant amount of electricity power consumption. Furthermore, it demands the miner to buy specific computation devices. Besides, a protocol to gather the society-related taxes such as public education funding and charities is lacking in existing consensus algorithms. In response, this paper...

Abstract
The majority of studies in the field of developing identification and authentication protocols for Internet of Things (IoT) used cryptographic algorithms. Using brain signals is also a relatively new approach in this field. EEG signal-based authentication algorithms typically use feature extraction algorithms that require high processing time. On the other hand, the dynamic nature of the EEG signal makes its use for identification/authentication difficult without relying on feature extraction. This paper presents an EEG-and fingerprint-based two-stage identification-authentication protocol for remote healthcare, which is fast, robust, and multilayer-based. A modified Euclidean distance...

Abstract
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cancer cells which shed from the primary tumor, enter circulation and spread cancer all over the body. CTCs give valuable information about cancer and can help diagnosis and prognosis. Hence separating and isolating CTCs from blood is a necessity for cancer therapeutics. CTCs are separated from blood cells by their different physical or biochemical properties. Many groups have attempted different methods for separation of CTCs. Inertial microfluidics is one of the newest approaches in CTC separation technologies which separates CTCs based on their size. Current inertial microfluidic systems containing straight, spiral, serpentine and contraction expansion...

Oxidation Desulfurization of Liquid Fuels Using TiO2-based Photocatalysts
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Larimi, Afsaneh Sadat (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the increasing consumption of fuel, the use of new methods with high efficiency to remove sulfur from fossil fuels is felt more than ever. Hydrogenation and oxidation of sulfur organic matter, such as thiophenes, is an old method of desulfurization of liquid fuels. Using a photocatalyst, everything can be done in an environment that is very low cost. In this study, the photocatalytic elimination of dibenzothiophene was investigated. For this purpose, carbon-doped thiamine dioxide was used as the photocatalytic base, which is synthesized by hydrothermal method. This method is the same source of titanium and carbon. To increase the performance of the catalyst, platinum metal was loaded...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Larimi, Afsaneh Sadat (Supervisor)
Abstract
During the last few decades, efforts have been made to replace fossil fuels with clean and non-absorbent energy sources. One of the promising strategies is energy production by hydrogen storage using water splitting. For this purpose, different methods of using light, heat and electricity are provided. Electrolysis of water with a simple environment such as very high purity of hydrogen produced, controllable, device, no need for high temperature and pressure in the reactor and huge potential for industrial applications has been very much considered. Water electrolysis consists of two reactions: reduction of water to hydrogen (HER) and oxidation of water to oxygen (OER). The second reaction...
