Abstract
A comprehensive study is performed to investigate the performance of a non-uniform circular array interferometer in a real time 3-dimensional direction finder. The angular range of view is supposed to be 65 degrees vertically and 120 degrees horizontally, which is suitable for airborne applications. Interferometer is designed to work in the S, C and X bands. Regarding optimization process, the interferometer employs an eight element non-uniform circular array along with a phase reference antenna at the center of the array. Several quantities and parameters are studied, e.g., frequency behavior, origins of phase measurement errors, Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) effect on phase measurement, and...

Abstract
Fluid flow modeling in porous media has many applications in waste treatment, hydrology and petroleum engineering. In any geological model, flow behavior is controlled by multiple properties. These properties must be known in advance of common flow simulations. When uncertainties are present, deterministic modeling often produces poor results. Percolation and Random Walk (RW) methods have recently been used in flow modeling. Their stochastic basis is useful in dealing with uncertainty problems. They are also useful in finding the relationship between porous media descriptions and flow behavior. This paper employs a simple methodology based on random walk and percolation techniques. The...

Abstract
The prediction of flow behavior in porous media can provide useful insights into the mechanisms involved in CO2 sequestration, petroleum engineering and hydrology. The multi-phase flow is usually simulated by solving the governing equations over an efficient model. The geostatistical (or fine grid) models are rarely used for simulation purposes because they have too many cells. A common approach is to coarsen a fine gird realization by an upscaling method. Although upscaling can speed up the flow simulation, it neglects the fine scale heterogeneity. The heterogeneity loss reduces the accuracy of simulation results. In this paper, the relation between heterogeneity loss during upscaling and...

Abstract
An upscaling method such as renormalization converts a detailed geological model to a coarse one. Although flow equations can be solved faster on a coarse model, its results have more errors. Numerical dispersion, heterogeneity loss, and connectivity misrepresentation are the factors responsible for errors. Connectivity has a great effect on the fluid distribution and leakage pathways in EOR processes or CO2 storage. This paper deals with the description and quantification of connectivity misrepresentation in the upscaling process. For detection of high-flow regions, the flow equations are solved under simplified single-phase conditions. These regions are recognized as the cells whose fluxes...

Abstract
Asphaltene instability is one of the major problems in gas injection projects throughout the world. Numerous models have been developed to predict asphaltene precipitation; The scaling equation is an attractive tool because of its simplicity and not involving complex properties of asphaltene. In this work, a new scaling model is presented to account for asphaltene precipitation due to gas injection at reservoir conditions. Extensive published data from literature have been used in model preparation. To check predictive capability of the equation, miscible gas injection experiments are conducted for a southwest Iranian oil reservoir. Experimental results show that methane injection has...

Abstract
Regarding the increasing number of electrical devices in the smart homes that leads to increase in total electricity consumption and cost, it is essential to use energy management methods to reduce the electricity cost. However, this can cause resident's dissatisfaction. Hence, it is important to define a method in which cost and dissatisfaction be optimized simultaneously. Among different services, an electric vehicle is the one that can be used as an energy storage system, so it can reduce the daily cost despite of increasing the total energy consumption. In this paper, we study the effect of the EV on the cost and dissatisfaction in our proposed method. © 2018 IEEE

Abstract
Enhanced Oil Recovery from carbonate reservoirs is a major challenge especially in naturally fractured formations where spontaneous imbibition is a main driving force. The Low Salinity Water Injection (LSWI) method has been suggested as one of the promising methods for enhanced oil recovery. However, the literature suggests that LSWI method, due to high dependence on rock mineralogy, injected and formation water salt concentration, and complexity of reactions is not a well-established technology in oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs. The underlying mechanism of LSWI is still not fully understood. Due to lack of LSWI study in free clay dolomite fractured reservoir, and to investigate of...

Abstract
The connectivity between two points in porous media is important for evaluating hydrocarbon recovery in underground reservoirs or toxic migration in waste disposal. For example, the connectivity between a producer and an injector in a hydrocarbon reservoir impact the fluid dispersion throughout the system. The conventional approach, flow simulation, is computationally very expensive and time consuming. Alternative method employs percolation theory. Classical percolation approach investigates the connectivity between two lines (representing the wells) in 2D cross sectional models whereas we look for the connectivity between two points (representing the wells) in 2D aerial models. In this...
A new mathematical model for force gravity drainage in fractured porous media
, Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 83, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 711-724 ; 01693913 (ISSN) ; Kharrat, R ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In force gas/oil gravity drainage process in fractured porous media, gas is flowing in both matrix and fractures leading to produce a finite gas pressure gradient. Consequently, viscous force plays an important role for displacing matrix oil toward fractures in addition to gravity force that is required to be modeled appropriately. A new analytical model for estimation of steady state oil saturation distribution with assumption of fixed gas pressure gradient throughout the matrix is presented. Moreover, based on some results of this analytical model a different numerical formulation is developed to predict the performance of oil production process. Comparison of the results obtained from...

Abstract
Transient heat-up of a solid propellant rocket structure during motor burning time is studied, numerically. The solid phase energy equation coupled with unsteady compressible flow equations are used in this simulation. The flow-field equations are discretized and solved using upwind Roe's scheme. The results show that heat transfer from the gas phase boundaries has negligible effect on internal ballistics behavior. On the other hand, the results are suitable for a thermal stresses analysis in the chamber case and are consequently valuable from structural design viewpoints

Abstract
A novel type of four-impinging-jets reactor (FIJR) has been proposed and tested successfully for the oxidative desulfurization of kerosene as a typical light fuel oil. The FIJR is characterized by a high-intensity mixing chamber located at the bottom of the reactor and equipped with four impinging jets. The influences of various operating and design parameters such as feed flow rate, internozzle distance, jet diameter, and jet Reynolds number on the performance of the FIJR have been carefully investigated. As a result of both the impinging process and shear forces exerted on the phases, the rate of desulfurization in FIJR increased significantly compared to that obtained by a conventional...

, Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 600-608 ; ISSN: 2345-3605 ; Rad, M ; Hajilouy, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
In common catamaran vessels, demihulls are parallel to each other. In this paper, the total resistance of a catamaran vessel with non-parallel demihulls is investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments are carried out at different Separation Ratios (S.R.), that is the ratio of fore to aft separation of the catamaran demihullsand also in two ratios of length to separation in amidships (L/Sm). The FLUENT solver, based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM), was used for numerical solution. Applying the VOF model, the free surface around the catamaran vessel and total resistance are calculated and compared with experimental results. Finally, the frictional resistance of the catamaran from...
A bending theory for beams with vertical edge crack
, Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 52, Issue 7 , July , 2010 , Pages 904-913 ; 00207403 (ISSN) ; Behzad, M ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
In this paper a linear continuous theory for bending analysis of beams with an edge crack perpendicular to the neutral plane subject to bending has been developed. The model assumes that the displacement field is a superposition of the classical EulerBernoulli beam's displacement and of a displacement due to the crack. It is assumed that in bending the additional displacement due to crack decreases exponentially with distance from the crack tip. The strain and stress fields have been calculated using this displacement field and the bending equation has been obtained using equilibrium equations. Using a fracture mechanics approach the exponential decay rate has been calculated. There is a...

Abstract
This study attempts to investigate a new way for cooling PV cell using natural vapor as coolant. The performance of solar cell was examined on simulated sunlight. The natural vapor encountered backside of PV cell vertically in various distribution and different mass flow rates. Also, the effect of natural vapor temperature in cooling performance was analyzed. Results indicated that the temperature of PV cell drops significantly with increasing natural vapor mass flow rate. In detail, the PV cell temperature decreased about 7 to 16°C when flow rate reaches 1.6 to 5grmin-1. It causes increasing electrical efficiency about 12.12% to 22.9%. The best performance of PV cell can be achieved at high...

, Article International Journal of Dynamics and Control ; Volume 5, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 733-740 ; 2195268X (ISSN) ; Heydari, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
A passive bipedal walking robot can descend down a small slope without any exertion of external force and only by using the gravity force. By exerting a proper energy to a passive biped robot, its walking speed can be controlled and also it can be forced to walk on flat planes and ascending slopes. In this paper, the proper energy is applied to the robot in three different methods: applying a proper moment to the robot joints, applying a proper moment to the robot’s stance leg, and applying a proper movement to the robot’s upper body. It is found that the first method is not practical, but the second and third methods enhance the stability and speed regulation of the robot. Additionally, the...

Abstract
Roll control of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) is a significant issue in the current field of research for many researchers in the subject of AUV control system designation. Especially at higher speeds, the roll angle generated by a single rotating propeller or other external disturbances can considerably influence the whole dynamics and therefore the operation of the vehicle. In this paper, the utilisation of a system of contra-rotating-propellers (CRP) to enhance the roll dynamics of an AUV is evaluated by developing a six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) dynamics and control systems’ simulator. The results show that: 1. The single propeller system can cause roll angle deflections...

Abstract
This paper presents a new symmetric slew rate enhancement (SRE) circuit suitable for operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). The proposed SRE circuit is composed of two auxiliary circuits which are automatically activated during fast signal transitions (slewing) by comparing the input and output signals. The auxiliary circuits pump required current in/out the load capacitance. In this way, the slew rate of the amplifier is significantly improved without any extra static power dissipation. The proposed technique can be applied to a variety of operational amplifiers. However, incorporating the proposed SRE circuit into a folded-cascode amplifier (FCA) results in 7× slew rate...

Abstract
This paper examines the role of bank-firm relationships in transmitting credit supply shocks to the real side of the economy in an emerging market. Using a hand-collected dataset for Iranian public companies, we exploit firms' exposure to a bank involved in a massive Ponzi scheme in 2011. We document a nearly 8 percentage point drop in annual employment growth rate for firms connected to the troubled bank following the credit dry-up caused by the scandal. We show that the magnitude of the effect on employment and investment is amplified by bank-firm relationship at least as much as by the financial constraint status found in previous studies. The results highlight the role of bank-firm...
