    Abstract
An efficient, green, novel and rapid vortex-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction (VADSPE) technique was used for the preconcentration and determination of trace levels of Cu2+ followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized from graphite and then modified by pectic acid (poly-d-galacturonic acid, PA) to synthesize the pectic acid–graphene oxide (PA-GO) nanocomposite. The Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, field emission scanning electron microcopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to characterize the synthesized GO-PA nanocomposite. By using VADSPE technique, PA-GO was used as an adsorbent for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi Esfahani, Saman (Author) ; Moghaddasi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Eftekhari, Eaman (Supervisor) ; Daemi, Ali Akbar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Knot theory is the study of ambient isotopy classes of compact 1–manifolds in a 3-manifold. In classical knot theory this 3-manifold is R3 or S3. This field has experienced a great transformative advances in recent years because of its strong connections with and a number of other mathematical disciplines including topology of 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds, gauge theory, representation theory, categorification, morse theory, symplectic geometry and the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves. In this thesis we start with classical knot theory, introducing some of its (classical) invariants like unknotting number, Seifert genus and slice genus of a knot, knot group and finally Alexander Polynomial...

Evaluating Availability of Backend Logic in Enterprise Storage Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Reza (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data storage systems are an essential part of any Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. Unavailability of these systems can directly lead to service disruption to customers and can be very costly in enterprise applications such as ebanking, online reservation systems, and mobile services. Modeling availability of disk subsystem is a major step in design of data storage systems. Previous modeling techniques have mainly focused on data unavailability or data loss due to double or multiple disk failures. In this thesis, we present both simulation and analytical modeling techniques to investigate the effect of serviceability on the overall availability of disk subsystems. The proposed...

    Abstract
The present contribution is devoted to develop multivariate analytical figures of merit (AFOMs) as a new metric for evaluation of quantitative measurements using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC × GC–MS). In this regard, new definition of sensitivity (SEN) is extended to GC × GC–MS data and then, other multivariate AFOMs including analytical SEN (γ), selectivity (SEL) and limit of detection (LOD) are calculated. Also, two frequently used second- and third-order calibration algorithms of multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) as representative of multi-set methods and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) as representative of...

A comparison between these Stabilities will also be made and examples for the application of the results will be provided

Numerical and Parametric Investigation of Several Novel Cable Damper Braces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Mobin (Author) ; Maleki, Shervin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, several novel cable-pipe damper brace (CPDB) systems are introduced. The CPDBs consist of steel cables wrapped around supporting pipes and arranged as cross-bracing in steel frames. The arrangements are such that the cables are always in tension when a lateral load is applied to the steel frames. The wrapping of cables around pipes makes the systems act like a friction damper in a seismic event. In addition, the possibility of energy dissipation by plastic pipe deformation and yielding of cables is investigated. Each system is analyzed by nonlinear finite element method to investigate its lateral strength and cyclic behavior. The primary results of this study showed that some...

Optimization of Fillet Rolling of Ductile Cast Iron Crankshaft in Order to Increase the Bending Fatigue Resistance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to reduce stress concentration, crankshaft is designed with a fillet radius in the corner of pin to web contact. Fatigue fracture under bending load initiated in fillet region is known as the main failure mechanism of crankshaft, so fillet rolling process is used to increase the bending fatigue resistance of the crankshaft. This process induces compressive residual stress under fillet surface in order to retard the fatigue initiation and to slow fatigue crack propagation. At first, influence of fillet rolling process on bending fatigue resistance of a ductile cast iron crankshaft is investigated. The residual stress distribution under the crankshaft fillet induced by this process...

Assessment of Multivariate Chemometric Methods Combined with Comprehensive Two-dimensional Gas Chromatography Towards Determination of Aromatic Compounds in Complex Samples

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Ali (Author) ; Parastar Shahri, Hadi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) have emerged as a powerful technique suitable for the separation of complex mixtures because of their higher resolution and higher peak capacity. The invention of GC×GC is a milestone development in chromatographic history. However, one of the main challenges in chromatography and especially in GC×GC is related to the difficulty on the analysis and interpretation of the enormous amount of data obtained in these cases. In this context, resolution, identification and quantification of target compounds in the presence of interferences are issues which have a great importance and not totally solved yet. The present...

The Cutoff Phenomenon in Reversible Markov Chains

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Hamid (Author) ; Zohuri Zangeneh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A sequence of Markov chains is said to exhibit (total variation) cutoff if the convergence to stationarity in total variation distance is abrupt. We consider reversible lazy chains. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of the cutoff phenomena in terms of concentration of hitting time of “worst” (in some sense) sets of stationary measure at least , for some ... (0; 1). As an application of these methods, we prove that a sequence of lazy chains on finite trees exhibits cutoff if and only if the product of the mixing time and the spectral gap tends to

Numerical Investigation of Geometrical and Material Parameters Effect on Inflation and Deflation of oil well Inflatable Packers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Ahmad (Author) ; Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inflatable packers have a great value in downhole operations due to their unique ability to expand to several times their initial diameter. These type of packers have a sealing element. This element is constructed of thin overlapped sheet metal ribs which are surrounding an inner tube. These overlapped ribs protect inner tube against the extrusion. The outer surface of this element covered by a layer of rubber. The outer elastomeric cover seals the annulus of the casing and isolates the zones in the well. In this study, some of the geometrical and material parameters effects on inflation and deflation of inflatable packers are investigated by numerical method. At first, for this purpose, the...

Effect of defects on the local shell buckling and post-buckling behavior of single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 79 , November , 2013 , Pages 736-744 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Eftekhari, M ; Mohammadi, S ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The local buckling behavior of perfect/defective and single/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under axial compressive forces has been investigated by the molecular dynamics approach. Effects of different types of defects including vacancy and Stone-Wales (SW) defects and their configurations on CNTs with different chiralities at room temperature are studied. Results show that defects largely reduce the buckling stress and the ratio of immediate reduction in buckling compressive stress of the defective CNT to the perfect one, but have little influence on their compressive elastic modulus. SW defects usually reduce the mechanical properties more than vacancy defects, and zigzag CNTs are...

    Abstract
Two novel heterogeneous hybrid catalysts were successfully synthesized using octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane hydrochloride salt (OA-POSS) and ionic liquids, followed by immobilization of Cu and Ag nanoparticles. The obtained hybrid catalysts, Cu@POSS-ILs and Ag@POSS-ILs, were characterized using FT-IR, SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD and TGA. Catalytic studies demonstrated that Cu@POSS-ILs was an excellent catalyst for click reaction in aqueous medium. Furthermore, Ag@POSS-ILs was also exhibited to be an active catalyst for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction. Simple preparation and easy catalysts recovery and recyclability of Cu@POSS-ILs and Ag@POSS-ILs for at least 3 and 6 runs,...

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 26, Issue 7 , 2017 , Pages 3516-3530 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Eftekhari, M ; Movahedi, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2017
    Abstract
Aluminum matrix in situ nanocomposite was produced by one to six passes friction stir processing (FSP) with pre-placed Fe3O4 nanoparticles (15-20 nm). Microstructure studies showed that solid-state reactions between the aluminum matrix and Fe3O4 particles during the process led to in situ formation of Al3Fe and Al5Fe2 in the stir zone. Initial Fe3O4 as well as Al-Fe intermetallic compounds (IMCs) particles were homogeneously dispersed in a fine grain matrix after six passes of FSP. Hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the composites were increased 64 and 27%, respectively, compared to the base metal. The reasons were studied in the light of reinforcing particles distribution, formation...

Solving Composite Optimization Problems and Applications in Image Processing and Data Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari, Asieh (Author) ; Mahdavi-Amiri, Nezamoddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
At first, we introduce composite optimization problems some review the proposed methods to solve these problems. To solve the composite optimization problems with strongly convex objective function, recently Chamboll and Pock proposed a general fast iterative shrinkage and thresholding algorithm (GFISTA). After that, Calatroni and Chambolle proposed a backtracking strategy for this algorithm. Unlike classical Armijo-type line searching, proposed backtracking rule allows for local increasing or decreasing of the descent step size along the iterations. In this thesis, we describe this algorithm with backtracking and prove its accelerated convergence rate. We also discuss some heuristic...

    Two-dimensional random projection

    , Article Signal Processing ; Volume 91, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 1589-1603 ; 01651684 (ISSN) Eftekhari, A ; Babaie-Zadeh, M ; Abrishami Moghaddam, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
As an alternative to adaptive nonlinear schemes for dimensionality reduction, linear random projection has recently proved to be a reliable means for high-dimensional data processing. Widespread application of conventional random projection in the context of image analysis is, however, mainly impeded by excessive computational and memory requirements. In this paper, a two-dimensional random projection scheme is considered as a remedy to this problem, and the associated key notion of concentration of measure is closely studied. It is then applied in the contexts of image classification and sparse image reconstruction. Finally, theoretical results are validated within a comprehensive set of...

Online Algorithms for Fair Allocation of Goods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eftekhari Hesari, Mahsa (Author) ; Zarrabi Zadeh, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we study the max-min fair allocation of goods which represents one of the most basic problems in scheduling theory. Here we consider the online problem of allocating a set of indivisible items among agents whom each has her own preference list over the items. The goal is to maximize the minimum happiness (profit) of the agents. We present an algorithm with competitive ratio n 2 and prove that this competitive ratio is tight. We also consider this problem when each agent has a type and the number of types is constant and solve the problem where the number of types is 2 or 3. Furthermore, we study the problem with resource augmentation. We focus on doubling the number of items...

Two dimensional compressive classifier for sparse images

    , Article Proceedings of the 2009 6th International Conference on Computer Graphics, Imaging and Visualization: New Advances and Trends, CGIV2009, 11 August 2009 through 14 August 2009, Tianjin ; 2009 , Pages 402-405 ; 9780769537894 (ISBN) Eftekhari, A ; Moghaddam, H. A ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The theory of compressive sampling involves making random linear projections of a signal. Provided signal is sparse in some basis, small number of such measurements preserves the information in the signal, with high probability. Following the success in signal reconstruction, compressive framework has recently proved useful in classification, particularly hypothesis testing. In this paper, conventional random projection scheme is first extended to the image domain and the key notion of concentration of measure is closely studied. Findings are then employed to develop a 2D compressive classifier (2D-CC) for sparse images. Finally, theoretical results are validated within a realistic...

    , Article Proceedings of the 2009 6th International Conference on Computer Graphics, Imaging and Visualization: New Advances and Trends, CGIV2009, 11 August 2009 through 14 August 2009, Tianjin ; 2009 , Pages 392-397 ; 9780769537894 (ISBN) Eftekhari, A ; Moghaddam, H. A ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Spectral manifold learning techniques have recently found extensive applications in machine vision. The common strategy of spectral algorithms for manifold learning is exploiting the local relationships in a symmetric adjacency graph, which is typically constructed using k-nearest neighborhood (k-NN) criterion. In this paper, with our focus on locally linear embedding as a powerful and well-known spectral technique, shortcomings of k-NN for construction of the adjacency graph are first illustrated, and then a new criterion, namely k/K-nearest neighborhood (k/K-NN) is introduced to overcome these drawbacks. The proposed criterion involves finding the sparsest representation of each sample in...
