Polar codes for a quadratic-Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem
, Article Proceedings of the International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems ; 2013 , Pages 718-722 ; 21540217 (ISSN) ; 9783800735297 (ISBN) ; Behroozi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this work, we study the performance of polar codes for lossy compression of a Gaussian source with a side information at decoder; known as the quadratic-Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. First we extend the binary polar codes to q-ary for the Wyner-Ziv problem. We show that the nested q- Ary polar codes are optimal for this case. Then we present two polar coding schemes for the Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. In the first scheme, we achieve a rate above the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function with a gap of 0.5 bits compared with the optimal rate. This scheme utilizes a successive cancellation decoder and is optimal in weak side-information cases when the decoder side-information noise variance is...

Abstract
In this work, we study the lossy source coding of a Gaussian source with polar codes. We show through two distributions on discrete alphabet, quantized approach as well as Central Limit Theorem (CLT) approach, when the alphabet size grows to infinity, polar codes can achieve the rate distortion bound for a Gaussian source. By comparing the rate of convergence on two distributions, we show that the quantized approach have a better convergence rate than the CLT approach
Simulation of Crack Propagation in Ductile Metals Under Dynamic Cyclic Loading by Adaptive Finite Element Method and Continuum Damage Mechanics Model
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Crack nucleation and growth is unfavorable in many industrial and every day-life cases. designers’ effort is to prevent or delay it by taking into account safety and maintenance considerations; but in some industrial operations, the main target is to form a crack in a part to achieve a particular shape; and designers’ duty is to control the way it happens. so numerical modeling of this phenomena has many useful applications in preventing the structures’ failure and designing the production processes for industrial goods; and because of this, a great attention has been paid to it in the last two decades. a situation usually encountered in every day-life is the earthquake excitation which...
Source Coding with Polar Codes
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Polar codes were introduced by Arikan in 2009. These codes are the first family of codes that with low encoding complexity and successive cancellation decoder, can achieve the channel capacity. Polar codes, at first were implemented for channel coding, but in 2010 performance of these codes in binary and q-ary alphabet source was studied. It is shown that these codes can perform efficiently in channel coding and source coding. On the other hand, one of the most important continuous sources are Gaussian sources. Due to the importance of Gaussian sources and good performance of polar codes, we try to evaluate the performance of these codes in Gaussian sources. Note that, these codes have...

Abstract
In this paper, the thermo-dynamic analysis of contact-impact problem is presented in the large deformation of hyperelastic material based on the Taylor-Galerkin method. The technique is applied for the time domain discretization of thermo-dynamic governing equations in the advection-diffusion problems. The impenetrability condition and frictional contact constraints are fulfilled by imposing the augmented-Lagrange technique for nonmatching contact surfaces. The Taylor-Galerkin method is employed to describe the advection-diffusion effect in the numerical solution of parabolic equation of unsteady heat transfer condition. The effect of temperature is taken into account in the stress field by...
Numerical simulation of ductile crack growth under cyclic and dynamic loading with a damage–viscoplasticity model
, Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 99 , February , 2013 , PP. 169–190 ; Eghbalian, M ; Azadi, H ; Saffar, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, the crack propagation in ductile materials is simulated under cyclic and dynamic loading. The adaptive finite element method is used to model the discontinuity due to crack propagation. The ductile fracture assumptions and continuum damage mechanics are utilized to model the material rupture behavior. Moreover both the rate-independent and rate-dependent constitutive equations are elaborated and the crack closure effect and combined hardening model are discussed in addition to some aspects of finite element implementation. Finally, a comparison is performed between the numerical simulation results and those of experiments to illustrate the robustness of proposed computational...

Abstract
Background: Combating viral hepatitis is part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and WHO has put forth hepatitis B elimination targets in its Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis (WHO-GHSS) and Interim Guidance for Country Validation of Viral Hepatitis Elimination (WHO Interim Guidance). We estimated the global, regional, and national prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), as well as mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to HBV, as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. This included estimates for 194 WHO member states, for which we compared our estimates to WHO elimination targets. Methods: The primary...
