, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sharif Bakhtiar, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, a wideband multi-standard digital transmitter based on the multi-path architecture has been designed in 65-nm CMOS process. Moreover, the effect of phase error of the clocks on the output specifications of this multi-path transmitter has been analyzed, and based on the derived theoretical equations, circuit-level solutions for the correction of these errors have been proposed. In addition to the circuit-level solutions for error correction of the clocks, a general setup for calibration of the multi-path transmitter has been presented. Also, several software-based algorithms for the calibration of the transmitter have been studied and their validity has been verified using...
Finite Element Analysis of Repair Welding Residual Stress in Pressure Vessels and Piping System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Repair welding is one of the most prevalent processes in repair and maintenance part of all industries. Amongst the issues of welding processes are residual stresses and distortions. Thus prediction of residual stresses and their distribution are important for designing welding procedure specifications. Circumferential butt weld is often used for joining steam and hot water lines in plants. Due to the intense concentration of heat in the welding, the regions near the weld line undergo severe thermal cycles. The thermal cycles cause non-uniform heating and cooling in the material, thus generating inhomogeneous plastic deformation and residual stresses in the weldment. The presence of residual...

The main question in the present project was how to relate the...
Deep Learning and Optimal Control
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotouhi, Morteza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Our main focus in this thesis is on optimal control methods for the analysis of deep neural networks, such as the supervised learning problem. A neural network with a large number of layers can be modeled with an ordinary differential equation, whose control parameters play the role of intermediary functions in the neural network. This model gives us a more powerful tool to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the neural network. Also, in this thesis, the problems of numerical implementation of these methods will be discussed

Abstract
In this paper, distributions of stress and strain components of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-elastic loading under different boundary conditions are obtained by semi-exact methods of Liao's homotopy analysis method (HAM), Adomian's decomposition method and He's variational iteration method (VIM). The materials are assumed to be perfectly elastic and isotropic. A two dimensional plane stress analysis is used. The distribution of temperature over the disk radius is assumed to have power forms with the higher temperature at the outer surface. The results of the three methods are compared with those obtained by Runge-Kutta's numerical...

Abstract
This article presents a multi-standard transmitter based on the eight-path architecture with a fully digital baseband (BB) input, covering the frequency band from 300 MHz to 1.5 GHz, while all harmonics and the distortion product of C-IMD3 are rejected to better than -40 dBc. The proposed architecture is based on the multipath technique in which the amplitude weighting algorithm is implemented in the digital domain. The fully digital input baseband section of the architecture eliminates the need for power-consuming circuit modules, such as mixers, high-frequency filters, and amplifiers, thus simplifying the required circuitry and improving the overall performance in terms of the operating...
Improving River Discharge Estimation by Considering the Impact of Water Quality via Optical Remote Sensing Data
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Danesh Yazdi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Recent years have seen the development of various remote sensing-based methods for river streamflow estimation. Among them, the C/M approach estimates streamflow by analyzing surface reflectance at two benchmark pixels, namely dry and wet. However, its efficiency heavily depends on the expert-selected dry and wet pixels, which cannot be chosen randomly. In this study, we introduced the Normalized Difference Streamflow Index (NDQI) as a novel proxy for streamflow estimation. This index, which utilizes the spectral bands of the Sentinel-2 satellite, is sensitive both to soil moisture changes along riverbanks and turbidity variations during high-flow events. Unlike the C/M approach, NDQI does...

Abstract
In this paper, distributions of stress and strain components of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-elasto-plastic loading are obtained by semi-exact method of Liao's homotopy analysis method (HAM) and finite element method (FEM). The materials are assumed to be elastic-linear strain hardening and isotropic. The analysis of rotating disk is based on Von Mises' yield criterion. A two dimensional plane stress analysis is used. The distribution of temperature is assumed to have power forms with the hotter point located at the outer surface of the disk. A mathematical technique of transformation has been proposed to solve the homotopy equations...
Interpretation of neural networks is susceptible to universal adversarial perturbations

Abstract
Interpreting neural network classifiers using gradient-based saliency maps has been extensively studied in the deep learning literature. While the existing algorithms manage to achieve satisfactory performance in application to standard image recognition datasets, recent works demonstrate the vulnerability of widely-used gradient-based interpretation schemes to norm-bounded perturbations adversarially designed for every individual input sample. However, such adversarial perturbations are commonly designed using the knowledge of an input sample, and hence perform sub-optimally in application to an unknown or constantly changing data point. In this paper, we show the existence of a Universal...
Double Field Theory
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Arfaei, Hesamaddin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Double Field Theory tries to incorporate T-duality, one of fundamental features of string theory, as a symmetry of a field Theory on a doubled space. It sets fields depend on winding mode conjugate coordinates as well as conventional space-time coordinates. In this review after presenting a brief introduction to string theory we investigate O(d,d,ℤ) duality group. Subsequently, we focus on Double Field Theory construction putting our attention on massless sector of string theory. We investigate on 2D nonlinear sigma model action in DFT and its gauge algebra. We follow this review by discussing constraints of DFT and Double Geometry. At the end we present some unsolved questions in this...

Abstract
Theoretical and numerical analyses of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-mechanical loadings have been carried out by variable material properties (VMP), Runge-Kutta's (RK) and finite element (FE) methods. The material is assumed to be elastic-linear hardening. A power form function is used to describe the temperature gradient with the higher temperature at outer surface. Von-Mises theory has been used as failure criterion. The effects of geometry, material and thermal loading parameters as well as boundary conditions on radial, hoop and equivalent stress distributions which have not been studied in much detail in previous works have been...

Abstract
Web search engines play a significant role in answering users’ information needs based on the huge amount of data available on the internet. Although evaluating the performance of these systems is very important for their improvement, there is no comprehensive, unbiased, low-cost, and reusable method for this purpose. Previous works used a small and limited set of queries for their evaluation process that restricts the assessment domain. Moreover, these methods mainly rely on human evaluators for manual assessment of search engines which makes the results of the evaluation subjective to the opinion of human evaluators and also prone to error. In addition, repeating the evaluation would be a...

Abstract
In this work, the production and properties of Al 6061/SiC composites, made using a squeeze casting method, were investigated. SiC preforms were manufactured by mixing SiC powder, having a 16 and 22 pm particle size, with colloidal silica as a binder. 6061 Al melt was squeeze cast into the pores of the SiC preform to manufacture a DRA composite containing 30v/o reinforcement. The aging behavior, tensile properties and fracture mechanism of the cast material were studied. The results show that higher hardness, yield strength, tensile strength and Young's modulus can be obtained by the addition of SiC particles to 6061 Al alloy, whereas tensile elongation decreases. This is mainly caused by a...

Abstract
In this study, three Vis/NIR handheld spectrometers coupled with four machine learning methods were developed for the analysis of the authentic bovine milk samples and adulterated samples with hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite. On this matter, ensemble bagged tree (EBT), random under sampling-boosted ensemble (RUS-BE), random subspace discriminant ensemble (RSDE), and random subspace ensemble k-nearest neighbor (RSE-kNN) were proposed and compared. The experiments were performed in two different scenarios. In the first scenario, pure milk and adulterated samples with one adulterant were analyzed separately with three handheld spectrometers. By comparing the results of ensemble...

Abstract
In electrical energy market, an economic game is running in which, power generating companies compete with each other in order to determine their suitable strategies and gain the highest possible profit. The literature shows the researchers actually use different algorithms to determine their suitable strategies but not Nash equilibrium method. These algorithms can not guarantee that the strategic equilibrium points can be found. In this research, the classic Nash method is used to determine GENCOs appropriate strategies and is simulated on some well known models (Cournot, Supply function equilibrium (SFE) and Bertrand), combined energy and reserve markets will be studied. The results of...

Investigating the Effect of Chemical Composition on the Anisotropy of Solid-Liquid Interfacial Energy of Nickel-Niobium Alloy
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tavakoli, Rouhollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Although the anisotropy of the solid-liquid interfacial free energy for most metal alloys is small, this anisotropy plays a significant role in the growth rate, morphology, and preferred crystallographic directions in dendritic growth. In recent research, the binary nickel-niobium alloy has been suggested as a suitable substitute for studying the solidification behavior of the superalloy Inconel 718. In this study, using molecular dynamics simulation with the LAMMPS software, pure nickel and Ni-%1Nb, Ni-%5Nb, and Ni-%10Nb alloys were examined (composition is based on atomic percent). After equilibrating the liquid and solid phases at the melting temperature, the interfacial phase was studied...
Optimal space coverage with white convex polygons

Abstract
Assume that we are given a set of points some of which are black and the rest are white. The goal is to find a set of convex polygons with maximum total area that cover all white points and exclude all black points. We study the problem on three different settings (based on overlapping between different convex polygons): (1) In case convex polygons are permitted to have common area, we present a polynomial algorithm. (2) In case convex polygons are not allowed to have common area but are allowed to have common vertices, we prove the NP-hardness of the problem and propose an algorithm whose output is at least (Formula presented.). (3) Finally, in case convex polygons are not allowed to have...

Abstract
Let G be a graph of order n. For every v ∈ V (G), let EG(v) denote the set of all edges incident with v. A signed k-matching of G is a function f : E(G) −→ {−1, 1}, satisfying f(EG(v)) ≤ 1 for at least k vertices, where f(S) = ∑e∈S f(e), for each S ⊆ E(G). The maximum of the values of f(E(G)), taken over all signed k-matchings f of G, is called the signed k-matching number and is denoted by βk S (G). In this paper, we prove that for every graph G of order n and for any positive integer k ≤ n, βk S (G) ≥ n −k −ω(G), where w(G) is the number of components of G. This settles a conjecture proposed by Wang. Also, we present a formula for the computation of βn S(G)

Abstract
As elastic optical networks (EONs) are expected to convey high bitrate connections, a failure in these networks causes vast data losses. Thus, addressing the problem of survivability in EONs is of great importance. In this paper, survivability of an EON with multiclass traffic is investigated, where each traffic type needs specific protection mechanism and scheduling strategy. In particular, a connection request may demand for dedicated path protection, shared backup path protection, or restoration mechanism. Besides, it can tolerate a pre-determined delay and be scheduled at future time slots, referred to as advance reservation, or must be served immediately without any delay, referred to...
