Numerical parametric investigation of hysteretic behavior of steel-reinforced elastomeric bearings under large shear deformation

    , Article Structures ; Volume 26 , August , 2020 , Pages 456-470 Khaloo, A ; Maghsoudi Barmi, A ; Ehteshami Moeini, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Steel Reinforced Elastomeric Bearings (SREB) are mostly designed and used for providing different supporting conditions under service loads; while recent studies have shown remarkable characteristics which help them as a cost-effective isolation system. However, little investigation has been carried out to indicate the influence of parameters affecting the mechanical properties of the bearings under large shear deformations (i.e., the seismic performance as an isolation system). A comparative parametric study was conducted herein through finite element modeling of SREBs. The implemented model was also verified by experimental test results. The hysteretic behavior was studied in both cases of...

Experimental investigation of unbonded ordinary steel reinforced elastomeric bearings as an isolation system in bridges

    , Article Structures ; Volume 32 , 2021 , Pages 604-616 ; 23520124 (ISSN) Maghsoudi Barmi, A ; Khaloo, A ; Ehteshami Moeini, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reduction of large tensile stresses and cost-efficiency has made unbonded isolators an attractive option as an isolation system. Following this idea and the results obtained by various researchers, it is shown that unbonded steel-reinforced elastomeric bearings (SREBs), which are used and designed for non-seismic actions, have inherently acceptable characteristics in tolerating large shear deformations for a cost-effective isolation system and can provide improved structural performance. However, this capacity is neglected in the design process. The current article presents an experimental program to analyze the mechanical properties of steel-reinforced natural rubber bearings without the...

    Abstract
Following the idea of using unbonded isolators to eliminate the tensile stress and providing a cost-effective isolation system, recent experimental research has shown ordinary unbonded steel reinforced elastomeric bearings (SREBs) as an attractive option for seismic isolation of highway bridges. The focus of current research work is on the evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of a highway bridge isolated by unbonded SREBs through developing fragility curves of the structure. This assessment considers parameters playing a key role in the isolation system behavior, namely the friction coefficient, as well as the isolator aging effects. In this regard, a typical three-span highway bridge is...

Cyclic performance assessment of damaged unreinforced masonry walls repaired with steel mesh reinforced shotcrete

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 253 , 2022 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Ehteshami Moeini, M ; Razavi, S. A ; Yekrangnia, M ; Pourasgari, P ; Abbasian, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings are rather popular around the globe due to low construction costs, even though they can be prone to substantial damage caused by even moderate earthquakes. Numerous URM buildings that have experienced damages from past earthquakes require to be upgraded or at least return to their undamaged state in order to be able to withstand future earthquakes. In many cases, reconstruction is not the best choice because of financial and time restrictions. As such, repair/retrofit is the best choice, assuring the post-earthquake serviceability. Furthermore, seismic repair/retrofit can be a cost-efficient method to avoid reconstruction complexities and expenses. In...

Towards an understanding of the marine fouling effects on VIV of circular cylinders: Response of cylinders with regular pyramidal roughness

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 59 , 2016 , Pages 378-394 ; 01411187 (ISSN) Zeinoddini, M ; Bakhtiari, A ; Ehteshami, M ; Seif, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Underwater surface of man-made structures is quickly covered by unwanted aquatic organisms. They change the flow regime around the structure. Despite the important contributions of previous studies on the vortex induced vibration (VIV) of bluff bodies, the flow induced vibration of non-stationary cylinders covered by marine fouling appears not to have received due attentions in the literature. The current paper reports on an attempt for better understanding the marine fouling effects on the VIV of circular cylinders. A structured review of the literature related to the fluid structure interactions in marine fouled cylinders is first presented. Results of an experimental study on the VIV of...

A new ROI extraction method for FKP images using global intensity

    , Article 2012 6th International Symposium on Telecommunications, IST 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 1147-1150 ; 9781467320733 (ISBN) Ehteshami, N. S. M ; Tabandeh, M ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP) is one of the newest biometrics. In this paper, a novel approach has been proposed to segment the Region of Interest (ROI) of a FKP image using the global intensity. This method upgrades the speed and accuracy of segmentation stage, as well as the pace of other steps of the procedure. This has been achieved by employing the area with maximum intensity in ROI extraction, instead of using the creases of the knuckle image. To confirm this improvement, lots of experiments have been performed and the method has been compared with the only existing schemes for ROI extraction suggested by Zhang and Kekre. At the end, the captured ROI images obtained by three methods have...

    Abstract
River water quality monitoring using traditional water sampling and laboratory analyses is expensive and time-consuming. The application of artificial neural network (ANN) models to simulate water quality parameters is cost-effective, quick, and reliable. This study provides two methods of mathematical and ANN modeling to simulate and forecast five important river water quality indicators (DO, TDS, SAR, BOD5, HCO3) correlated with variables such as EC, temperature, and pH which can be measured easily and almost with no cost. The mathematical method is based on polynomial fitting with least square method and the neural network model was developed using a feed-forward algorithm. The 35 years’...

    Abstract
The reaction kinetics and chemical equilibrium of the reversible catalytic hydrolysis reaction of a methyl acetate to acetic acid and methanol using a strongly acidic ion exchange resin catalyst named Amberlyst 15 were studied. To investigate the different behavior of Amberlyst 15 in the adsorption of reactants and product species, the equilibrium behavior of binary non-reactive liquid mixtures, consisting of one reactant and one product were studied experimentally. The Langmuir model was used to describe the equilibrium condition, quantitatively. Then the employed model was compared with the more complicated thermodynamic models to describe the equilibrium between the catalytic polymer...

    Abstract
Walking-robots have received much attention because of the variety of motion maneuvers they can produce and the many applications they have in various areas including rehabilitation. One of these maneuvers is running. In this study, a time-invariant controller is designed to dynamically stabilize a five-link and a seven-link running-robots in two dimensions. In the simulation of the seven-link model, an attempt has been made to measure the impact of the circular foot on the stepping pattern. Also, it is tried to present a dynamically simple model similar to the geometry of the human body. Simulations are performed in MATLAB software. The running is modeled with three phases of stance, flight...

    Abstract
A new unbreakable solid-phase microextraction fiber coating based on polyethylene terephthalate/graphene nanocomposite was developed. The nanocomposite coatings were prepared by an electrospinning technique using a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer solution containing the dispersed graphene on the outer surface of a stainless-steel rod. The applicability of polyethylene terephthalate/graphene nanocomposite coatings was examined by extraction of organochlorine compounds (OCs) including heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, γ-HCH, and β-HCH from aqueous samples in headspace mode. Influential parameters on extraction efficiency such as polymer concentration, the weight ratio of components, the...

Global attitude/position estimation using landmark and biased velocity measurements

    Abstract
We propose an observer for attitude and position estimation of a rigid body using translational and angular velocity measurements together with a single landmark. Under an observability condition depending on landmark position, global and asymptotic convergence of attitude and position estimation errors to zero is achieved. We extend the observer for the case of nonideal velocity measurements. Simulation examples demonstrate convergence properties of the observer in the face of noise and bias in velocity measurements

Structural analysis of stiffened FGM thick walled cylinders by application of a new cylindrical super element

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 58 , 2009 , Pages 116-121 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Moeini, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Structural behavior of ring stiffened thick walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated in this paper. Functionally graded materials are inhomogeneous composites which are usually made from a mixture of metal and ceramic. The gradient compositional variation of the constituents from one surface to the other provides an elegant solution to the problem of high transverse shear stresses that are induced when two dissimilar materials with large differences in material properties are bonded. FGM formation of the cylinder is modeled by power-law exponent and the variation of characteristics is supposed to be in radial direction. A finite element formulation is...

Long-term planning of integrated local energy systems using deep learning algorithms

    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Optimal investment and operations of integrated local energy systems (ILESs) require medium to long-term prediction of energy consumption. To forecast load profiles, deep recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) are becoming increasingly useful due to their capability of learning uncertainty and high variability of load profiles. However, to explore and choose a DRNN model, out of conceivably numerous configurations, depends entirely on the performing task. In this regard, we tune and compare seven DRNN variants on the task of medium and long-term predictions for heating and electricity consumption. The ultimate DRNN model outperforms two state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, namely...

    Abstract
Due to the expansion of power networks in response to the increase in total load demand, the complexity regarding power systems transmission networks’ configuration has been increased. Similarly, with the advent of local energy markets and transactive energy concept, power distribution networks are undergoing a fundamental change. In this respect, numerous agents are transacting power within both distribution and transmission networks. Therefore, as more power is transacted among agents in different energy networks, power networks face higher power losses. Dealing with the financial outcomes of these losses, a general accurate yet fast method for loss allocation in power networks is of...

    2017
    Abstract
In the current study, electrospun-based ionic liquid (IL) doped polyamide (PA) nanofibers were prepared and used as the coating material of solid phase microextration device in the fiber geometry. Addition of IL, decyl-3-methylimidazolium mono bromate, increased the conductivity of the PA solution facilitating the electrospining process. The scanning electron microscopy images of decyl-3-methylimidazolium mono bromated/polyamide nanofibers showed the decreased diameter of the nanofibers in the range of 35–160 nm compared to the PA nanofiber. The factors affecting the structure of nanofibers (e.g. ratio of decyl-3-methylimidazolium mono bromate to PA, coating time and applied voltage) were...

    Abstract
Demand response (DR) as a state-of-the-art program is accommodated in the energy efficiency contexts of the smart grid. Lack of the customer knowledge about how to respond to the time-differentiated tariffs and offered controlling signals is the major obstacle in the way of broad DR implementing. As a solution, an optimization method, namely load control (LC), is proposed to automatically control the on/off status of the responsive appliances in a smart home. This paper focuses on the direct load control (DLC) program in the category of incentive-based DR programs. LC is extended to consider inconvenience cost of the DLC implementation for DLC program participants. Outputs of the extended LC...
