There are a number of Artificial In elligence (AI) algorithms for implementation of 'Blokus Duo' game. We needed an implementation on FPGA, and moreover, the design had to respond under a given time constraint. In this paper we examine some of these algorithms and propose a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem by considering intelligence, time constraint and FPGA implementation limitations

We investigate bonded boojum-colloids in nematic liquid crystals, configurations where two colloids with planar degenerate anchoring are double-bonded through line defects connecting their surfaces. This bonded structure promotes the formation of linear chains aligned with the nematic director. We show that the bonded configuration is the global minimum in systems that favor twist deformations. In addition, we investigate the influence of confinement on the stability of bonded boojum-colloids. Although the unbonded colloid configuration, where the colloids bundle at oblique angles, is favored by confinement, the bonded configuration is again the global minimum for liquid crystals with...

Epidemiological studies have identified obesity as a possible risk factor for low back disorders. Biomechanical models can help test such hypothesis and shed light on the mechanism involved. A novel subject-specific musculoskeletal-modelling approach is introduced to estimate spinal loads during static activities in five healthy obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2) and five normal-weight (20 < BMI < 25 kg/m2) individuals. Subjects underwent T1 through S1 MR imaging thereby measuring cross-sectional-area (CSA) and moment arms of trunk muscles together with mass and center of mass (CoM) of T1-L5 segments. MR-based subject-specific models estimated spinal loads using a kinematics/optimization-driven...

An essential input to the musculoskeletal (MS) trunk models that estimate muscle and spine forces is kinematics of the thorax, pelvis, and lumbar vertebrae. While thorax and pelvis kinematics are usually measured via skin motion capture devices (with inherent errors on the proper identification of the underlying bony landmarks and the relative skin-sensor-bone movements), those of the intervening lumbar vertebrae are commonly approximated at fixed proportions based on the thorax-pelvis kinematics. This study proposes an image-based kinematics measurement approach to drive subject-specific (musculature, geometry, mass, and center of masses) MS models. Kinematics of the thorax, pelvis, and...

							Abstract

Recent advances in medical imaging techniques have allowed pure displacement-control trunk models to estimate spinal loads with no need to calculate muscle forces. Sensitivity of these models to the errors in post-imaging evaluation of displacements (reported to be ∼0.4–0.9° and 0.2–0.3 mm in vertebral displacements) has not yet been investigated. A Monte Carlo analysis was therefore used to assess the sensitivity of results in both musculoskeletal (MS) and passive finite element (FE) spine models to errors in measured displacements. Six static activities in upright standing, flexed, and extended postures were initially simulated using a force-control hybrid MS-FE model. Computed vertebral...

The effective interaction between spherical colloids in nematic liquid crystals is investigated in the framework of the Landau-de Gennes theory. The colloids differ in their surface interaction with the nematic liquid crystal. The particles induce quadrupolar far-field distortions in the nematic matrix, favouring homeotropic and the other degenerate planar anchoring of the nematic director. In the strong anchoring regime the colloids with homeotropic anchoring are accompanied by an equatorial disclination line defect, known as "Saturn-ring", while the colloids with degenerate planar anchoring nucleate a pair of antipodal surface defects, called "boojums". In the linear (large-distance)...

In this paper, the predictions of different beam theories for the behavior of a shape memory polymer (SMP) beam in different steps of a thermomechanical cycle are compared. Employing the equilibrium equations, the governing equations of the deflection of a SMP beam in the different steps of a thermomechanical cycle, for higher order beam theories (Timoshenko Beam Theory and von-Kármán Beam Theory), are developed. For the Timoshenko Beam Theory, a closed form analytical solution for various steps of the thermomechanical cycle is presented. The nonlinear governing equations in von-Kármán Beam theory are numerically solved. Results reveal that in the various beam length to beam thickness...

The propagation of anti-plane surface waves in an inhomogeneous magneto-electro-elastic MEE) half-space with 6mm symmetry is studied. By virtue of both direct and indirect methods, the dispersion relations corresponding to two general cases of material properties variation are obtained. In the first case, it is assumed that all material properties involving MEE properties and density vary similarly in depth. Whereas, the second case considers different variations for MEE properties and density. The non-dispersive shear surface wave velocities pertinent to homogeneous MEE media under eight different surface electromagnetic boundary conditions are obtained as the limiting cases of the current...

Liquid crystal colloids have been proposed as suitable candidates for responsive photonic crystals. Large scale growth of such colloidal systems is, however, a challenge and recently template-assisted assembly has been proposed to guide the growth of colloidal crystals, with controlled symmetries, in nematic liquid crystals. Known for their long-range anisotropic interactions, these colloidal systems are stabilized typically at the center of the cells due to strong particle-wall repulsion from the confining substrates. This behaviour is dramatically changed in the presence of topographic patterning. Here we propose the use of topographic modulation of surfaces to select and localize...

A hallmark of more advanced models is their higher details of trunk muscles represented by a larger number of muscles. The question is if in reality we control these muscles individually as independent agents or we control groups of them called "synergy". To address this, we employed a 3-D biomechanical model of the spine with 18 trunk muscles that satisfied equilibrium conditions at L4/5, with different cost functions. The solutions of several 2-D and 3-D tasks were arranged in a data matrix and the synergies were computed by using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithms. Variance accounted for (VAF) was used to evaluate the number of synergies that emerged by the analysis, which...

Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is the most commonly used insitu test for soil characterization, including the liquefaction resistance. Many studies have sought to correlate SPT number to cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) as a frequently-used approach for assessment of liquefaction potential. However, it has been shown that SPT has major deficiencies (e.g., inaccuracy in coarse sands and clays) which have given rise to development and utilization of new characterization methods such as geophysical tests (e.g., down-hole and cross-hole). In this paper, a comparison is made between the results of SPT and geophysical tests in three boreholes through the body and foundation of Mahabad Dam (located...

One of the beautiful branches of Astrophysics is studing of binary systems and specially eclipsing binary sytems which is included transiting eclipsing extrasolar planets. Detecting of extrasolar planets with transit method is based on which a planet orbits around a star and when its orbit alignment is such that planet along our line of sight across disk of star, it causes eclipse of star and a drop in star’s brightness and from this we can find the existence of a planet. In analysis of observational light curve (obtained from data acquisition with photometry method) a synthetic light curve, constructed from a theoretical model which is based on transit, planet and star geometry, is...

Love Wave Propagation in a Functionally Graded Magneto-Electro-Elastic Half-Space with Quadratic Variations

							Abstract

The propagation behavior of Love wave in functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic half-spaces with a quadratic variation is addressed. The magneto-electromechanical coupling factor, the dispersion relations, electric potential, magnetic potential and displacement are obtained analytically for both magneto-electrically open and short conditions. The effect of gradient coefficient on phase velocity, group velocity and magneto-electromechanical coupling factor are plotted and discussed. Research on the wave propagation in magneto-electro-elastic materials is still very limited. This work provides us with a theoretical foundation to design and practically apply SAW devices with high...

In this study, the interaction between thin plate completely bonded to the transversely isotropic halfspace and a concentrated force applied horizontally (Mindlin-type force) are considered. This problem has been solved analytically. This problem is used as sample for thin solid films and surface coating technology, where the surface of solid is covered by thethin plate for increasing its stiffness. Moreover, this problem is a good sample when homogenous solid is subjected to contact loading and can be seen that mechanical properties of material which is near the solid surface varies; consequently, a two-phase solid is created.Because of the influence of noted inhomogeneity, solid is...

In this work, pH sensitive supramolecular shuttles consisting of carbon nanotube-graft-pyrene (CNT-graft-PYR) and hyperbranched polyglycerol with β-cyclodextrin core (β-CD-graft-PG) were synthesized and characterized. Supramolecular systems (PG/CNT/S) were able to load and transport doxorubicin in aqueous solutions. While PG/CNT/S were soluble in phosphate buffer pH 7, they were divided to their individual moieties in pH 5 and therefore CNTs containing staked doxorubicin molecules were precipitated

Deformation induced by deep excavations is one of the most important factors in investigating function of retaining structure constructed in urban areas. Predicting content of deformation induced by deep excavations is a fundamental and important step in designing of retaining structures. A prestressed grouted ground anchor is a structural element installed in soil or rock that is used to transmit an applied tensile load into the ground. In this study, effective factors in deformation induced by deep excavation reinforced by method of anchoring is analyzed by application of numerical study based on finite element method by using PLAXIS software, and results are compared. The seismic...

Analysis of Slabs Stiffened by Cables and Pedestals

							Abstract

In this study, a new concrete slab stiffened by concrete pedestals and steel cables is introduced. The slab system is studied by employing both analytical and numerical methods. The steel cables are connected to the edges of slab and the concrete pedestals mounted at the bottom face of slab act as the middle supports of cables. The tension force in the cable and its inclination results in upward forces acting at the bottom face of slab. With the aims of classical theory of thin plates and the superposition technique, the problem of a simply supported rectangular slab stiffened by cables is studied analytically. The obtained results are verified by a numerical modelling implemented in SAP2000...
