    Abstract
The ultra-supercritical once-through boiler (OTB) unit is an advanced power generation technology with high plant efficiency and low emissions. However, it is difficult to realize a coordinate control for the ultra-supercritical OTB unit to achieve the fast and stable dynamic response during the load tracking and grid frequency disturbances and in the presence of unavoidable uncertainties. In this paper, an accurate grey box multivariable coupled nonlinear model of an ultra-supercritical boiler-turbine unit is considered. Steam pressure at throttle valve, specific enthalpy in separator and active power are adjusted at desired values by manipulation of the fuel rate command, feedwater rate...

    Abstract
A numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer enhancement in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger using a porous medium inside its shell and tubes, separately. A three-dimensional geometry with k-ε turbulent model is used to predict the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the flow. The effects of porosity and dimensions of these media on the heat exchanger's thermal performance and pressure drop are analyzed. Inside the shell, the entire tube bundle is wrapped by the porous medium, whereas inside the tubes the porous media are located in two different ways: (1) at the center of the tubes, and (2) attached to the inner wall of the tubes. The results...

    Abstract
Protein mass spectra pattern recognition is a new forum in which many machine learning algorithms have been conducted to enhance the chance of early cancer diagnosis. The high-dimensionality-small-sample (HDSS) problem of cancer proteomic datasets still requires more sophisticated approaches to improve the classification accuracy. In this study we present a simple ensemble strategy based on measuring the generalizing capability of different subsets of training data and apply it in making final decision. Using a limited number of biomarkers along with 5 classification algorithms, the proposed method achieved a promising performance over a well-known prostate cancer mass spectroscopy dataset....

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 143-154 Farrahi, G. H ; Jafarzadeh, H ; Esmaeili, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
The effects of severe shot-peening process and formation of a nanostructured surface layer on mechanical properties of A356.0 alloy were investigated in this paper. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the average size of near-surface grains in severe shot-peened specimens is 75.8 nm. Three types of disk-shaped specimens, non-treated, conventionally shot-peened, and severely shot-peened were subjected to pin-on-disk wear test in the dry condition, in different loading and sliding speeds. Shot-peening process increases both hardness and roughness of the surface, and these two factors have, respectively, positive and negative effects on wear resistance. However, because of high-density...

    Abstract
Localization of radio-frequency (RF) transmitters using time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based methods is one of the conventional passive techniques that admits noncooperative source position finding, but suffers from challenging requirements such as precise intersensor synchronization and high-throughput transmission data links. A tradeoff governing the TDOA systems is in the sensor placement configuration. The more distance the sensors are placed, the more accurate localization is carried out, while the cost for the synchronization and data link increases, at the same time. In this work, a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization system is proposed that enjoys...

    Abstract
In this paper, the seismic behavior of dual structural systems in forms of steel moment-resisting frames accompanied with reinforced concrete shear walls and steel moment-resisting frames accompanied with concentrically braced frames, have been studied. The nonlinear behavior of the mentioned structural systems has been evaluated as, in earthquakes, structures usually enter into an inelastic behavior stage and, hence, the applied energy to the structures will be dissipated. As a result, some parameters such as ductility factor of structure (μ), over-strength factor (Rs) and response modification factor (R) for the mentioned structures have been under assessment. To achieve these objectives,...

    Abstract
One of the main issues of wastewater treatment is the silica deposition in steam turbines. Evaporation of silica with the steam in adequate concentration is one of the main sources of scale formation in steam turbines. In this study, the authors introduce the utilization of a genetic-based approach—gene expression programming (GEP)—for solubility prognostication of the silica in superheated steam of boilers with respect to water silica content and pressure. The result of GEP mathematical approach is a new algebraic formula to achieve our goals. Developed model predicts the silica solubility in the range of 0.8–22.1 MPa and 1–500 mg/kg for pressure and boiler water silica content,...

    Abstract
In spite of the extensive literature on the analysis of the muscle synergies during gait, the functionality of these synergies has not been studied in detail. This study explored the relationship between the motor modules and the kinematic maneuvers involved in human walking. Motion and surface electromyography data (of 28 trunk and lower extremity muscles) were acquired from ten healthy subjects during ten trials of self-selected speed gait each. The joint angle trajectories were half-wave rectified and divided into two independent positive directional degrees-of-freedom. The muscle and kinematic synergies were both extracted using the non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF) technique and...

    Abstract
In this paper, compressive strength of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined concrete cylinders is formulated using a hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and simulated annealing (SA), called GP/SA, and a robust variant of GP, namely multi expression programming (MEP). Straightforward GP/SA and MEP-based prediction equations are derived for the compressive strength of CFRP-wrapped concrete cylinders. The models are constructed using two sets of predictor variables. The first set comprises diameter of concrete cylinder, unconfined concrete strength, tensile strength of CFRP laminate, and total thickness of CFRP layer. The most widely used parameters of unconfined concrete...

    Abstract
In this paper, we will investigate the efficacy of IMAT (Iterative Method of Adaptive Thresholding) in recovering the sparse signal (parameters) for linear models with random missing data. Sparse recovery rises in compressed sensing and machine learning problems and has various applications necessitating viable reconstruction methods specifically when we work with big data. This paper will mainly focus on comparing the power of Iterative Method of Adaptive Thresholding (IMAT) in reconstruction of the desired sparse signal with that of LASSO. Additionally, we will assume the model has random missing information. Missing data has been recently of interest in big data and machine learning...
