Investigation of the Effect of Disorder and Two Approches of Coherent Potential Approximation and Local Distribution
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jafari, Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Disorders with creating the localized states, which are the states with limited spatial distribution, cause carriers of these states become limited to small part of space and cannot participate in the transport. If energy of these states is near the Fermi energy, the Anderson metal-insulator phase transition occurs. In this thesis,we studied type of disorders and determining their Hamiltonian and by studying definition of localization from different aspects, we attained a better explanation of disorders effects on materials. With studying the localization scaling theory, we ex-amined conditions of localization in different dimensions. Then for determining the green function and therefor the...

Abstract
Optical fiber torsion sensors have significant importance for structural health monitoring. In this paper, an optical fiber torsion sensor based on computer-generated-hologram (CGH) is proposed and investigated theoretically. In the proposed structure a dual mode fiber (DMF) is used as a sensing element. An acoustic source can be employed to induce a fiber grating. The acoustic induced fiber grating (AIFG) causes the fundamental LP01 mode of DMF couples to LP11 o and LP11 e fiber modes. In the presence of torsion in DMF, the profiles of LP01, LP11 o and LP11 e modes rotate relative to the absence of fiber torsion. At the end of DMF a suitable CGH can be employed to resolve spatially the...
A Game Theoretic Approach for Bidding Strategy in Wholesale Electricity Market in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fatemi Ardestati, Farshad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis، we consider bidding behavior of producers in wholesale electricity market in Iran. Participating in a day ahead pay-as-bid electricity auctions for Generator Companies with purpose of profit maximization in spite of market regulation constraints is taken into account. Since bidding functions are restricted to be evolved as a stepwise one with maximum of ten steps per unit in each hour، the main issue arise that whether increasing steps will improve the value of our objective function or not. Finally، in order to evaluate rationalities in bidding behavior of themarket participants، our results are compared with real bidding data combined for each power plant in a particular...
Investigation of hydrogen sensing properties and aging effects of Schottky like Pd/porous Si
, Article Journal of Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical ; Volume 146, Issue 1 , 8 April , 2010 , PP. 53–60 ; Iraji Zad, A. (Azam) ; Rahimi, F. (Fereshteh) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We prepared porous silicon samples coated by continuous palladium layer in electroless process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed cauliflower-shape Pd clusters on the surface. I–V curves of Schottky like Pd/porous Si samples were measured in air and in hydrogen. These measurements showed a metal–interface–semiconductor configuration rather than an ideal Schottky diode. Variations of the electrical current in the presence of diluted hydrogen at room temperature revealed that the samples can sense hydrogen in a wide range of concentration (100–40,000 ppm) without any saturation behavior. Hydrogen sensing properties of these samples were investigated at room temperature for a duration...
Value-based Optimal Design of FPB and LRB Isolators for Short to Medium Rise Buildings
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Esmail Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
Abstract
Seismic base isolation is the most effective method of protecting and strengthening structures against seismic damage caused by large to small earthquakes and aftershocks. Providing damping and energy absorption of the seismic isolation at the structure's base level can significantly reduce the cost of repairing and strengthening the structure in addition to reducing seismic damage. However, besides these advantages, due to their high cost, seismic isolations in major infrastructure projects, hospitals, and crisis management centers should have economic and social justification. In this regard, a value-based seismic design approach can justify this important issue. In recent years of...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Esmail Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop the value-based design approach using the endurance time method as a comprehensive and efficient framework in optimal seismic design of structures. Optimal resource allocation is an interesting and important subject in the seismic design of structures from the theoretical and practical viewpoint. Finding optimal solutions requires the use of a trial and error process that is accompanied by repetitive structural performance evaluation. The seismic design process will be efficient when it provides a comprehensive and reliable estimation of the earthquake effects and be cost-efficient in terms of computational demand. In this regard, the value-based design...

Abstract
Distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are increasingly gaining popularity due to their vast practical applications. There have been a lot of Brillouin-based distributed fiber sensing methods proposed so far but they suffer from a trade-off between spatial resolution, dynamic range and measurement time. In this paper, we propose a scanning-free Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) based on multiple short pulse stimulated Brillouin scattering. The accumulation of acoustic phonons which are stimulated due to the passage of successive pico-second pulses along the sensing fiber causes the sub-centimeter spatial resolution and kilometer...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Esmail Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
Abstract
This research has been performed with the aim of gaining familiarity with various types of seismic isolation systems, their unique features and numerous advantages, factors affecting their performance and finally their modelling and design. Despite the advantages of seismic isolation systems as control instruments, but where there is not enough information on the involved parameters in the performance of these systems, there is possibility of unpredictable behavior of the structures. Hence, considering the extent and influence of each parameter involved in the performance of the isolators, a parametric study is performed utilizing the 3D models under multi-directional excitations, using the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Esmail Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
Abstract
Vertical addition of existing buildings provides more living space without the need for more land use. Also adding a story on an existing building is one of the common needs in metropolitans. However, the structure may bear high risk due to vertical addition. This study aims to model conventional concrete structures built in Tehran and then assess and compare the seismic performance of base structure and extended structure. Seismic performance of a system is defined as their efficiency in providing enough safety and reducing the Life-Cycle Cost. For this purpose, seven archetypes as base structures and eight extended structures corresponding to base structures, that had residential...

Abstract
In this paper, a distributed relative humidity (RH) or moisture sensor is proposed. The proposed structure is a single mode telecommunication optical fiber coated by humidity sensitive and insensitive polymers periodically. The polymer coated fiber is surrounded by a high Young's modulus material such as stainless steel mesh. The swelling of the coated Humidity Sensitive Polymers (HSPs) as a result of moisture absorption induces fiber gratings in the single mode fiber. Depending on the coating period relative to the light wavelength, the induced fiber grating can be Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) or Long Period Fiber Grating (LPFG). The light reflected by the induced FBG or losses due to the...

Abstract
The main objective of this study is the development of endurance time (ET) excitations in order to take structural response uncertainty into account for use in performance-based earthquake engineering. There are several uncertainties in earthquake engineering, including earthquake occurrence, structural response, damage, and loss. In the current research, structural response uncertainty is directly included in the ET method, which is an analysis method used for performing structural behavior assessment under seismic actions. Conventional practice of the ET method does not provide any information about seismic response distribution. Despite the simplicity of the ET method, it is an accurate...
