    Abstract
Very fine alumina nanoparticles were loaded in novolac type phenolic resin (PF) using solution mixing method. The concentration of nanoalumina in PF was varied between 2.5 to 20 wt%. All the compounds were compression molded and then subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile, flexural, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests. SEM analysis showed that the nanoalumina were dispersed uniformly at low concentrations, however, at high concentrations, dispersion was suppressed leading to agglomerates in the composites. Mechanical testing revealed that the nanoalumina had a great influence on the strength and stiffness of PF resin particularly at concentrations below 5 wt%....

    , Article IET Communications ; Volume 5, Issue 14 , Sept , 2011 , Pages 1954-1963 ; 17518628 (ISSN) Etemadi, N ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, the authors propose an analytical model to evaluate the maximum stable throughput for unicast services in vehicular ad hoc networks. In this respect, the authors employ two queueing networks (QNs) to model the mobility patterns of the vehicles as well as the multi-hop packet transmission scenario. In the proposed model, the authors map the features of IEEE 802.11, as well as the details of multi-hop packet transmission, regarding the dynamic status of vehicles, onto suitable parameters of the QNs. In the authors' modelling approach, they take the details of MAC and routing schemes into account by classifying the vehicles based on their mobility patterns and considering their...

Simulation of Drag Reduction Via Microgrooves

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Etemadi, Armin (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Drag reduction on surfaces always has been a great case of study, especially in transport industry. This project discusses the external laminar flow of a single-phase fluid over a flat plate and the effects of making rectangular tiny grooves - in micron or millimeter - on them to reduce total drag. Making grooves with appropriate geometry on surfaces causes the fluid-solid contact area on the groove's surface turn into fluid-fluid and as a result the fluid will not shed into the groove. In other words the flow instead of having a no-slip boundary condition on inner surfaces of the groove, creates vortices in them that causes a remarkable reduction in velocity gradient followed by a skin...

    Abstract
Few works has been focused on the problem of joint distributed data compression and network coding. In this paper we give some examples showing the advantage of broadcast nature of wireless environment as a basis for joint codes design. Also we show that joint coding is possible in the case of multiple unicasts. The idea of this paper can be exploited in an opportunistic manner. Actually, the foundation of our idea is nothing but combining opportunistic network coding (COPE) and distributed source coding using syndromes (DISCUS) for wireless applications. © 2009 IEEE

    Abstract
This paper approaches the topic of protection system reliability from an economic point of view by 1) designing an optimal modern protective relay based on a prescribed level of reliability subject to economic constraints and 2) determining optimal routine test intervals by balancing the cost of routine tests and losses due to relay failure. This paper proposes a method that enables the designer to optimally select hardware and software components of a digital protective relay to gain the highest possible overall reliability with a restricted budget. This design can be viewed as a reliability and redundancy allocation problem for which a new easy-to-implement algorithm is proposed. In...

    Abstract
Protective relay technologies have evolved from single-function electromechanical and static relays to modern multifunction digital relays over the past few years. Protection systems play a vital role in maintaining a desirable level of reliability in power systems. Thus, their own reliability should be evaluated and any cause of their malfunction should be fully comprehended. In this paper, a new reliability model is proposed that associates protection system failures to four main causes: 1) relay hardware, 2) relay software, 3) ancillary equipment, and 4) human error. In addition, this model can take other aspects of the protection system into consideration, such as human error during...

Effect of alumina nanoparticle on the tribological performance of automotive brake friction materials

    , Article Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites ; Vol. 33, issue. 2 , October , 2014 , pp. 166-178 ; ISSN: 07316844 Etemadi, H ; Shojaei, A ; Jahanmard, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Brake friction materials filled with nanoalumina were produced by both conventional and solvent-assisted mixing methods. It was shown that nanoalumina loading led to the reduction of friction coefficient and improvement in mechanical, wear and thermal behaviors. Such behavior was attributed to the role of nanoalumina in producing stable friction layer and easy conduction path in matrix. It was postulated that nanoalumina is able to attach on the surface of microalumina facilitating the rolling of microalumina at interface. Solution-processed samples exhibited lower improvement in tribological and mechanical properties compared to the conventional mixing due to the limited interaction between...

Numerical simulation of drag reduction in microgrooved substrates using lattice-boltzmann method

    Abstract
We study drag reduction of a uniform flow over a flat surface due to a series of rectangular microgrooves created on the surface. The results reveal that making grooves on the surface usually leads to the generation of secondary vortices inside the grooves that, in turn, decreases the friction drag force and increases the pressure drag force. By increasing the thickness of the grooves to the thickness of the obstacle, the pressure drag increases due to the enhancement of the generated vortices and the occurrence of separation phenomenon and the friction drag reduces due to a decrease of the velocity gradient on the surface. In addition, by increasing the grooves depth ratio, the pressure...

Quantitative assessment of protection system reliability incorporating human errors

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability ; Volume 222, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 255-263 ; 1748006X (ISSN) Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The protection system plays a vital role in maintaining a high degree of service reliability in present-day power systems. Considerable work has been done to examine different aspects of protection systems and their associated reliability. All of the reliability predictive methods are based solely on equipment failures, neglecting the human component of the protection system. In this paper, a modified Markov model is presented that incorporates human errors in reliability evaluation of protective devices. Two main types of relay failure (failure to operate and inadvertent operation) are taken into account in the proposed model. The model also considers routine test inspections, the...

Distribution system reliability enhancement using optimal capacitor placement

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 2, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 621-631 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Failure statistics of most utilities indicate that distribution systems make the greatest individual contribution to the unavailability of supply to customers. Optimal capacitor placement in distribution systems has a number of advantages such as reducing losses, improving voltage profile, improving power factor and so on. The conventional objective function of the optimal capacitor placement consists of the total cost of losses and investments. Since capacitors supply reactive loads locally, they improve the load-carrying capability of the lines and therefore play the same role as redundant lines. Thus, optimal capacitor placement can also improve the reliability indices of a distribution...

High-impedance fault detection using multi-resolution signal decomposition and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 110-118 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Etemadi, A. H ; Sanaye Pasand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
High-impedance faults (HIFs) on distribution systems create unique challenges to protection engineers. HIFs do not produce enough fault current to be detected by conventional overcurrent relays or fuses. A method for HIF detection based on the nonlinear behaviour of current waveforms is presented. Using this method, HIFs can be distinguished successfully from other similar waveforms such as nonlinear load currents, secondary current of saturated current transformers and inrush currents. A wavelet multi-resolution signal decomposition method is used for feature extraction. Extracted features are fed to an adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for identification and classification....

    Development of Microextraction Methods
for the Trace Determination of Organic Compounds in Biological and Environmental Media

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khalilian, Faezeh (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The approach of this thesis is to develop and simplify robust microextraction techniques and apply these developed methods to real samples and complex matrices. Firstly, a modified solvent microextraction with back extraction method (SME/BE) combined with high performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) was developed for the determination of citalopram in human plasma. Extraction process was performed in a home-made total glass vial without using a teflon ring, usually employed in SME/BE. The evaluation results demonstrated that the calibration curve showed linearity in the range of 1.0–130.0 ng/mL which covers therapeutic window and even lower amounts which is...

Modified Nano Silica a Sorbent for Needle Trap Extraction of PAHs from Water Samples Followed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometric Determination

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roostayi, Ali (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, a newly designed needle trap device (NTE) containing modified nanosilica as sorbent is used for sampling and preconcentration of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from headspace of aqueous solutions. An inexpensive modifier, cis-9-octadecenoic acid (oleic acid), which contains a long chain, was used to modify the surface of the nano-scaled silica particles. The hydrophobic interaction between oleic acid and aromatic compounds was the preliminary evidence for extraction of these compounds. After adsorption of selected compounds, thermal desorption was, subsequently, employed to transfer the extracted analytes into a GC–FID. Extraction time and temperature, flow rate...

Liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction and high performance liquid Chromatography for Seperation and Determination of Estrogens in Aquatic Media

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Maleki, Hossein (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction (LLLME) is a new miniaturized liquid extraction to preconcentrate and purify for ionizable analytes. In LLLME firstly analytes extracted in an organic phase, and subsequently back-extracted into a second aqueous phase. Main advantages of LLME are their speed, simplicity, negligible volume of solvents, analytical precision, short sample preparation and low cost. This technique was shown to be an efficient preconcentration method for the extraction of estrone and estriol from biological samples. A basic microdrop in the tip of microsyringe was fixed in the organic layer over the sample solution. After extraction for a preset time, the microdrop was...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zandi, Omid (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study new magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) methods based on Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) for extraction and preconcentration of oxadiargyl and fuoxetine from aqueous and biological samples were developed. In the first work, Fe3O4 NPs was successfully used as a magnetic nano-sorbent in magnetic micro-solid phase extraction (M-µ-SPE) of oxadiargyl, a newly used pesticide, from environmental water samples prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determination. Oxadiargyl in mild acidic condition has tendency to be adsorbed on Fe3O4 NPs surfaces. Most important parameters that affect the extraction efficiency were also studied. Under optimized condition, the proposed...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bayat, Parisa (Author) ; Bagheri, Habib (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A novel application of diazonium salts for grafting the sol-gel based sorbents was sucessfully introduced. Preparation of unbrekable sorbents has been on highly demand and sough after by many researches for several years. However, there are a few achivements in this regard, but it still remains as a big challenge.Regarding to this issue, diazonium salts were sucessfully applied for functionalizing the different substrates, in which there is no limitation in selection of substrates. Different substrates, metallic and non metallic, such as copper, brass, stailess steel and PTFE were chosen to be functionalized by chemical or electrochemical reduction of 4-Amino phenyl acetic acid. Then,...
