Abstract
Fuel management in PWR nuclear reactors is comprised of a collection of principles and practices required for the planning, scheduling, refueling, and safe operation of nuclear power plants to minimize the total plant and system energy costs to the extent possible. Despite remarkable advancements in optimization procedures, inherent complexities in nuclear reactor structure and strong inter-dependency among the fundamental parameters of the core make it necessary to evaluate the most efficient arrangement of the core. Several patterns have been presented so far to determine the best configuration of fuels in the reactor core by emphasis on minimizing the local power peaking factor (Pq). In...
Evaluation of Dynamic Properties of Plastic Concrete Using Bending Disk Tests in Small Strain Range
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Evaluation of the compression wave velocity (Vp ) and small strains elastic modulii of various types of plastic concrete specimens in unconfined and triaxial compression tests using piezoelectric transducers was performed in this study. Plastic concrete consists of aggregates, cement, water and bentonite, mixed at a high water cement ratio, to produce a ductile material. It is used for creating an impermeable cut-off wall for seepage control in highly permeable dam foundations. A plastic concrete cut-off wall acts essentially as a barrier to stop or reduce the groundwater flow. In this study the effect of specimen age, water-cement ratio, bentonite-cement ratio, confining pressure, wave...

Abstract
The concentration and temperature behaviors of the self-diffusion coefficient were analyzed in glycerol-water and methanol-water solutions using Diffusion-Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) experiment. Our results indicate that the self-diffusion coefficient dips with increasing concentration and decreasing temperature. The concentration behavior shows that there is hydrogen bond interaction between water and alcohol, which declines the self-diffusion coefficients of both in the aqueous binary mixtures. The self-diffusion activation energies were estimated 13.6, 29.4, and 32.8 (kJ/mol) for methanol and 24.8, 25.5, and 27.6 (kJ/mol) for water in the methanol-water solutions with 0.03, 0.10, and 0.20...
Study of the Affecting Factors on the Stability of G-Quadruplex Structures
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Tafazzoli, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
We used spectroscopic techniques to study self-assembled structures based on nucleobases like G-quadruplexes and macrocycles. Also we used DOSY NMR technique to study hydrogen bonding network in alcohol solutions. First part of our results indicate thermodynamic stability and slow kinetic of G-quadruplexes in apolar aromatic solvents like toluene. Also our results show easy monitoring of formation of each K+ or Na+ complex by NMR, due to the low solubility of alkaline metal salts in apolar media and possibility to stop at any given time in order to control G-quadruplex yield. When combined with suitable functional units, these valuable attributes may be used for the noncovalent synthesis of...
Descriptive Modeling of Traffic Accidents of Urban Public Transport Drivers Based on Role of Drivers’ Behaviors, Attitudes and Perceptions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nasiri, Habibollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Drivers' behavior is an influential factor in more than 90% of driving accidents. Due to the increased traffic load due to the use of private cars, as well as traffic congestion restrictions for the use of private cars at large city centers, the use of public transportation means for transportation of goods and passengers in order to reduce traffic load is a very convenient option and it is sometimes necessary. Therefore, it is very important to examine the behavior and character of drivers of public urban vehicles in order to increase traffic safety. The purpose of this research is to present and develop a descriptive model that describes the behaviors leading to at-fault accidents for...
Optimization of Die Profile in Screw Extrusion Process for an Arbitrary Profile by Considering Viscoelastic Effects of the Material
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, equations related to large deformation of a polymer were derived by considering viscoelastic effects. To express type of material behavior which includes elastoplastic and viscoelastic property at the same time, two-layer viscoplastic model was used. An axisymmetric model was used for modeling problem in finite element software. By derivation of parameters related to two layer model and entering them in finite element software and also entering other properties required to model the forming process, modeling was performed by special profile connecting input and output sections. Due to favorable properties of spline functions, profiles used in die geometry, were selected from...
Maximizing non-monotone submodular set functions subject to different constraints: Combined algorithms
, Article Operations Research Letters ; Volume 39, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 447-451 ; 01676377 (ISSN) ; Fazli, M ; Safari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
We study the problem of maximizing constrained non-monotone submodular functions and provide approximation algorithms that improve existing algorithms in terms of either the approximation factor or simplicity. Different constraints that we study are exact cardinality and multiple knapsack constraints for which we achieve (0.25-)-factor algorithms. We also show, as our main contribution, how to use the continuous greedy process for non-monotone functions and, as a result, obtain a 0.13-factor approximation algorithm for maximization over any solvable down-monotone polytope

Comparative assessment of the efficiencies of gas sparging and back-flushing to improve yeast microfiltration using tubular ceramic membranes
, Article Desalination ; Volume 217, Issue 1-3 , 2007 , Pages 93-99 ; 00119164 (ISSN) ; Tabaei, S. R ; Roostaazad, R ; Sharif University of Technology
2007
Abstract
Gas sparging and back-flushing treatments were compared as a means to tackle the problem of fouling in yeast microfiltration. Based on the feed and membrane characteristics, it was shown that either of these techniques could be superior to the other in order to overcome the problem. At more concentrated feed streams the main cause of flux decline was cake formation. In this condition gas sparging showed greater efficiency in flux enhancement. On the other hand at lower feed concentration the relative importance of internal fouling due to pore blockage, increased. In this case back-flushing was more effective. © 2007
In-situ nitrate remediation using nano iron/nickel particles
, Article Environment Protection Engineering ; Vol. 40, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 75-86 ; Vossoughi, M ; Shamsai, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Originally, the application of nano zero valent iron/nickel (nZVI/Ni) particles for nitrate removal in porous media was studied. nZVI/Ni was prepared and employed in batch and continuous modes. Based on batch experiments, the reaction kinetics was consistent with the adsorption model by the order of 1-1.5. The variation of the kinetics order depends on pH and nickel content. So that highest reactivity was observed for nZVI with 10% of Ni at pH ≤ 3. Nitrate remediation in a continuous system was mostly influenced by seepage velocity, quantity and freshness of nZVI/Ni and particle size of porous media. In a batch mode, the maximum nitrate removal was 99% while in a continuous mode it did not...

Abstract
Originally, application of nano zero valent iron (nZVI) particles for the removal of lead (Pb2+) in porous media was studied. At first, stabilized nZVI (S-nZVI) was prepared and characterized, then used in batch and continuous systems. Based on the batch experiments, corresponding reaction kinetics well fitted with the pseudo-first-order adsorption model, and reaction rate ranged from 0.01 to 0.04 g/mg/min depend on solution pH and the molar ratio between Fe and Pb. In batch tests, optimal condition with more than 90% removal efficiency at 60 min was observed at a pH range of 4 to 6 and Fe/Pb ratio more than 2.5. Continuous experiments exposed that Pb2+ remediation was as well influenced by...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Molaei, Asghar (Supervisor) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research work, mixed convection heat transfer of ferrofluids (i.e., magnetite nanoparticle) in a circular pipe fully filled with a porous medium in the presence of constant and alternating magnetic fields has been investigated both numerically and experimentally. The duct was heated by a heating coil and the magnetic field was applied via four electromagnets with U shaped ferrite cores and a frequency inverter. The nanoparticles were synthesized using co-precipitation method and coated with a surfactant (i.e., Tween 80) and doubled distilled water was used as the base fluid. To characterize the synthesized nanoparticles, various analyzing techniques such as VSM, SEM, and XRD were...

Abstract
In this work, forced-convection heat transfer of magnetic-sensitive nanofluids has been investigated in the presence of rotating magnetic field. In this regard, the laminar, Newtonian, incompressible, and two-dimensional (2D) fluid flow in a horizontal duct subject to constant wall temperature boundary condition was modeled. Moreover, the fluid was supposed to be non-electrical conductive and the magnetic field source comprised of two time varying components perpendicular to each other. Influences of magnetic field intensity and frequency, inlet fluid velocity, and spin viscosity on the forced-convection heat transfer of the magnetic nanofluids were investigated. It was found that the...

Abstract
In this article, three-dimensional (3D) forced-convection heat transfer of magnetic nanofluids in a pipe subject to constant wall heat flux in the presence of single or double permanent magnet(s) or current-carrying wire has been investigated and compared. In this regard, laminar fluid flow and equilibrium magnetization for the ferrofluid were considered. In addition, variations of magnetic field in different media were taken into account and the assumption of having a linear relationship of magnetization with applied magnetic field intensity was also relaxed. Effects of magnetic field intensity, nanoparticle volume fraction, Reynolds number value, and the type of magnetic field source...

Abstract
In this article, effects of magnetic fields induced by a finite length solenoid on the forced-convection heat transfer in a pipe partially filled with porous medium have been investigated. In this regard, two-dimensional steady-state fluid flow in the pipe was considered and the Darcy–Brinkman equation of motion was applied to model the fluid flow in the porous medium, as well as the thermal equilibrium was assumed between the solid phase and the magnetic nanofluid. Effects of electric current passing through the solenoid and the solenoid dimensions (i.e.; diameter and length) on the forced-convection heat transfer were studied carefully. The combined effects of the magnetic field and the...

Abstract
On-chip phase separation of multiphase microflows at the divergence point of Y-shaped microfluidic junctions is an effective way for integrating continuous microstructured devices. In this study, flow pattern maps of various solvent pairs based on the volumetric flow rates of both phases have been drawn experimentally and compared with numerical prediction to investigate the effective domain for which complete phase separation occurred. Furthermore, sufficient separation of aqueous and organic phases at the end of the microchannel was achieved by controlling the pressure difference at the liquid-liquid interface via loading back-pressure on the organic phase. A mathematical model based on...

Abstract
Wind turbines are of the most promising devices to cut down carbon emissions. However, some phenomena that adversely affect their performance are inevitable. The aim of the present paper is to investigate flow separation prevention exploiting leading edge (LE) single dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (SDBD-PA) on an airfoil belonging to a section of a locally developed wind turbine. The numerical results of the surface pressure distribution over the airfoil were compared with the experimental measurements carried out by the authors on the same blade section, and good agreement was found between numerical and experimental data for both plasma-OFF and plasma-ON cases. An in-depth...
