The Course of Martin Heidegger’s Notion of Science in His Early Thought,Based on Works Preceding Being and Time

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heshmati, Ata (Author) ; Sefidkhosh, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, first of all, the main question of Heidegger and his epoch is investigated. If we read Heidegger along the tradition of German philosophy, then it is perceived that the problem of science is the most central subject matter standing against Heidegger. My question is this: how Heidegger reaches to this existential phenomenological view about science. Regarding that, by giving a coherent narration about a crucial problem called 'the crisis of science', in the first chapter I gave a short view to philosophies preceding Heidegger, some important of which is Dilthey's philosophy of life, phenomenology of Husserl, and south-west school of neo-Kantianism. The second chapter...

Experimental investigation of a solar still equipped with an external heat storage system using phase change materials and heat pipes

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 409 , 2017 , Pages 128-135 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2017
    Abstract
In this study, a novel idea of storing the latent heat of condensing vapor in solar stills by means of phase change materials (PCMs) as a thermal storage is experimentally investigated. During the daytime, the generated water vapor by the solar energy, is conducted to an external condenser filled with PCM to be condensed. The wasted latent heat is absorbed by PCM and thereby stored. It is worth noting that there is no direct contact between the saline water and the PCM, therefore, the solar energy is not directly stored in the PCM. In the evening, the energy stored in the PCM is transferred as heat to the saline water by heat pipes and enables the desalination process to continue. Several...

    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this study, the theoretical investigation of a novel heat pump assisted humidification-dehumidification desalination system has been carried out. The conventional dehumidifier of the humidification-dehumidification system was removed and the evaporator of the heat pump was utilized for direct dehumidification of air. Besides, the heat pump condenser was used as the saline water heater of the humidification-dehumidification cycle. First, the sizes of the components were calculated at design conditions for fixed input operational conditions namely the ambient air temperature, relative humidity, and inlet saline water temperature. However, the input operating conditions vary at off-design...

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 496 , 2020 Faegh, M ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
A new design for heat pump integrated humidification-dehumidification (HDH-HP) desalination cycles was proposed in the current experimental study. An evaporative condenser was designed and fabricated instead of a separate humidifier, heater, and air/water-cooled condensers find in previous HDH-HP systems. Meanwhile, the air dehumidification process in this work directly occurred inside the heat pump evaporator. The effect of several operating parameters such as ambient wet-bulb temperature, spraying saline water and airflow rates, compressor speed, superheat, and evaporator saturation temperature control modes of the electronic expansion valve (EEV) on freshwater production and GOR were...

Experimental Investigation of an Evaporative Condenser-Based Combined Heat Pump and Humidification-Dehumidification Desalination System

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Faegh, Meysam (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present thesis aimed to study a novel heat pump integrated humidification-dehumidification (HDH-HP) desalination system. A theoretical outline was proposed for the first time to examine the design and off-design performance of HDH-HP cycles via the compressor characteristics method. In this regard, the variations in heat pump performance were modeled in different operating conditions for a fixed-size system. To fabricate a compact HDH-HP system, an evaporative condenser was designed and used instead of a separate humidifier, heater, and air/water-cooled condensers find in previous HDH-HP systems. Meanwhile, the air dehumidification process in this work directly occurred inside the heat...

Experimental investigation of heat recovery in a humidification-dehumidification desalination system via a heat pump

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 437 , 2018 , Pages 81-88 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Jafargholi, H ; Faegh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A hybrid HDH desalination system integrated with a heat pump was experimentally studied. In this system, heat pump's heating was used to raise the temperature of the air entering the humidifier and its cooling effect was used for dehumidification of humid air and freshwater production. In other words, heat pump's condenser works as the heater of the HDH cycle and its evaporator works as the coolant for the dehumidifier of HDH cycle. The effects of different parameters such as mass flow rate of inlet saline water (relative humidity of the air passing the dehumidification section), volume flow rate of the air passing the dehumidification section and ambient air temperature on freshwater...

Experimental investigation of a novel magnetically variable conductance thermosyphon heat pipe

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 126 , 2017 , Pages 1-8 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Ahmadi, H ; Faegh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
In this study, a novel Magnetically Variable Conductance Thermosyphon Heat Pipe (MVCTHP) was investigated experimentally. The possibility of deactivating a portion of evaporator length and subsequently altering heat pipe resistance by positioning a steel ball inside the evaporator and moving it by an external magnet was studied. The effect of various ball positions in the evaporator and inclination angles on heat pipe performance was studied at 30, 60, 90 and 120 W. The results indicated that at a given heat input, moving the ball away from the beginning of the evaporator of heat pipe increases its thermal resistance. Furthermore, by increasing heat input, MVCTHP performance for various ball...

Explaining Moral Role of Artifacts With Regards to Value Laden Theory of Technology

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinpour, Hesam (Author) ; Sefidkhosh, Meysam (Supervisor) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we review different approaches to the theory of value laden technology and realize that there are at least two major ideas about this. Some philosophers believe that technology is not a mere instrument and has a value laden nature. In contrast some others count technology as something neutral which contains no social or moral value. After explaining this ideas, in the second chapter we examine different models which explain the relation between technology and moral and social values and show how this values can contribute in design and use of technologies. In chapter three we talk about different methods used to steer technology in a desirable way which is in accordance with...

Examination of a novel solar still equipped with evacuated tube collectors and thermoelectric modules

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 382 , 2016 , Pages 21-27 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Behshad Shafii, M ; Shahmohamadi, M ; Faegh, M ; Sadrhosseini, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
In this article, a novel solar still which is equipped with thermoelectric modules to utilize the heat of vapor condensation is experimentally investigated. The use of thermoelectric modules as devices for generating electricity from the temperature difference between two environments (hot vapor steam and cold ambient air) as well as taking outstanding advantages of evacuated tubes as collectors with high performances in adverse climatic conditions, led to utilizing of the energy dissipated due to vapor condensation and a considerable increase in the performance of the system. The effect of using the generated electricity to operate a small propeller fan for inducing forced convection was...

Experimental investigation of a novel passive solar still with additional condensation on sidewalls

    , Article Desalination and Water Treatment ; Volume 89 , 2017 , Pages 29-35 ; 19443994 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Favakeh, A ; Faegh, M ; Sadrhosseini, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
In common solar stills, a portion of the produced vapor undesirably condenses on the sidewalls and runs down to be mixed with saline water in the basin. This results in lower distillate output of the system. The aim of this study was to improve the condensation process of a solar still without complicating its structure to collect the water condensed on sidewalls. The proposed solar still was made of two containers nested one inside the other such that the smaller container, containing saline water, fitted easily into the larger container. There was a thin gap between the two in which condensed liquid on sidewalls, ran down and was collected from the bottom of the larger container. The...

Development of artificial neural networks for performance prediction of a heat pump assisted humidification-dehumidification desalination system

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 508 , 2021 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Faegh, M ; Behnam, P ; Shafii, M. B ; Khiadani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
In this study, the application of data-driven methods for performance prediction of a heat pump assisted humidification-dehumidification (HDH-HP) desalination system was investigated for the first time. Although HDH-HP desalination systems have been widely studied both theoretically and experimentally, the application of data-driven models as a powerful predictive tool has not yet been investigated in these systems. To fill this gap, three data-driven models (MLPANN, RBFANN, and ANFIS) were applied using 180 experimental samples. The gain output ratio (GOR), heat transfer rates of the evaporator Q̇e, and evaporative condenser Q̇c, were considered as outputs. The results indicate that the...

Classification of Partial Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahuri Turki, Ata (Author) ; Safdari, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, we will study partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. First, we are going to introduce partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and construct some examples. One of the important questions in the study of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms is their classification problem, which provides a deeper understanding of manifolds and also of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms themselves. We will go through this problem by examining Hammerlindl, Potrie’s [1]’s work. They have proved that a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on a 3-manifold with a virtually solvable fundamental group, that has no periodic torus tangent to contraction-center or expansion-center, is dynamically...

    Strictly Toral Dynamics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talebi, Amin Sadat (Author) ; Esfahanizadeh, Mostafa (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This dissertation deals with nonwandering (e.g. area-preserving) homeomorphisms of the torus which are homotopic to the identity and strictly toral, in the sense that they exhibit dynamical properties that are not present in homeomorphisms of the annulus or the plane. This includes all homeomorphisms which have a rotation set with nonempty interior. There are two types of points: inessential and essential. It is known that the set of inessential points Ine(f ) is a disjoint union of periodic topological disks ("elliptic islands"), while the set of essential points Ess(f ) is an essential continuum, with typically rich dynamics ("the chaotic region"). One of the key results in this context is...

    Abstract
Low-temperature geothermal heat sources have the highest share of geothermal energy in the world. Utilization of these heat sources for energy and freshwater generation can play an important role in meeting energy and freshwater demands. To do so, this study aims to propose a novel trigeneration cycle powered by low-temperature geothermal sources. The proposed system, which is an integration of Kalina and humidification-dehumidification (HDH) cycles, is used for the generation of electricity, heating, and freshwater. For the Kalina cycle, an evaporative condenser is used. It also acts as a humidifier and heater of the humidification-dehumidification desalination cycle, resulting in a...

    Stationary Measures on Homogeneous Spaces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajabzadeh, Hesameddin (Author) ; Haji Mirsadeghi, Mir Omid (Supervisor) ; Nasiri, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Let be a sub-semigroup of SL(d;Z) which acts strongly irreducible on Rd, i.e. there is not any invariant finite union of nontrivial proper subspaces of Rd. acts on Td by homeomorphisms. We will show that under these assumptions every infinite invariant subset of Td under the action of is dense in Td. For instance, if x is a point in Td which is not rational, then x = Td. In this thesis, we will follow the method of Y. Benoist and J.F. Quint for proving such results. Their method is to prove some kind of rigidity for the stationary measures for the action of on Td. Actually, every atomless stationary measure is the lebesgue measure on Td which is invariant under all the elements of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Peyman (Author) ; Kouchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Shakouri, Meysam ($item.subfieldsMap.e) ; Noghabi, Mohammad ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
The object of this study is to determine the buckling load of reinforced composite conical shells under axial compression. . Shells are reinforced by stringers and rings and the boundary conditions are assumed to be simply supported. At first the equilibrium equations are obtained using the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), smeared stiffener technique and principle of minimum potential energy. In the following, the resulting equations which are the system of five variable coefficient partial differential equations in terms of displacement components are investigated by generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Finally the standard eigenvalue equation is formed and the...

    Non-statistical Dynamical Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Talebi, Aminosadat (Author) ; Razvan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor) ; Berger, Pierre (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Non-statistical dynamics are those dynamical systems for which a large subset of points in the phase space (positive measure subset) have non-statistical behavior, meaning that the orbit of these points does not have asymptotic distribution in the phase space. We introduce two new classes of these kinds of dynamics: non-statistical rational maps on the Reimann sphere and non-statistical Anosov-Katok maps of the annulus. We then give a general formalization of the notion of "statistical (in)stability" and show how it is connected to the existence of non-statistical dynamics in a general family of maps
