Improving the Performance of Graph Filters and Learnable Graph Filters in Graph Neural Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Babaiezadeh, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Graph signals are sets of values residing on sets of nodes that are connected via edges. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are a type of machine learning model for working with graph-structured data, such as graph signals. GNNs have applications in graph classification, node classification, and link prediction. They can be thought of as learnable filters. In this thesis, our focus is on graph filters and enhancing the performance of GNNs. In the first part, we aim to reduce computational costs in graph signal processing, particularly in graph filters. We explore methods to transform signals to the frequency domain with lower computational cost. In the latter part, we examine regulations in...
Development of Upper-Limb Motion Performance Indices Used in Home-Based Rehabilitation Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behzadipour, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, the national health systems have supported the idea of home-based rehabilitation, since receiving cares at hospital environments is too expensive both in money and time. This method reduces the patients’ commuting to the clinics. Moreover, it enables them to practice the prescribed movements at any time. Most of the existing systems compute the patient’s motion performance in a zero-one manner which does not distinguish any small progress in his condition. Thus, a non-task based method which can assess precisely the patient’s level is yet missing. This project aims to develop a set of motion performance indices which can judge the upper limb motions in a home-based...
Speech Enhancement Based upon Compressed Sensing
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghorshi, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
This thesis proposes a novel method for enhancing the speech signal based on compressed sensing. Compressed sensing, as a new rapidly growing research field, promises to effectively recover a sparse signal at the rate of below Nyquist rate. This revolutionary technology strongly relies on the sparsity of the signal and incoherency between sensing basis and representation basis. Exact recovery of a sparse signal will be occurred in a situation that the signal of interest sensed randomly and the measurements are also taken based on sparsity level and log factor of the signal dimension.
In this research, compressed sensing method is proposed to reconstruct speech signal and for noise...

Co-Microencapsulation of Folic Acid and Iron
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Vossough, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study aimed to prepare a type of microcapsule that microencapsulates folic acid and iron at the same time and protects these two substances against environmental and gastrointestinal conditions. Simultaneous release of these two nutrients has dual health properties and improves the efficiency of folic acid microencapsulation. In this study, biocomposites were formed containing alginate, pectin, and carboxymethylcellulose, and the microcapsules were synthesized by the ionization of calcium-alginate ions. Biocomposite optimization mixture with 13 experiments using experimental design software, optimal combination design method based on repopulation separator, restoring folic acid...

Abstract
This article presents a nonlocal sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory (SDBT) for the nonlinear vibration of single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs). The surrounding elastic medium is simulated based on nonlinear Pasternak foundation. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion of the SWBNNTs are derived using Hamilton's principle. Differential quadrature method (DQM) for the nonlinear frequency is presented, and the obtained results are compared with those predicted by the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). The effects of nonlocal parameter, vibrational modes, length, and elastic medium on the nonlinear frequency of SWBNNTs...

Abstract
With the development of modern sports, the design and production of sportswear play an essential role, especially in many modern difficult and dangerous sports. Selection of fibre fabrics is the most important factor because this influences the performance and efficiency, while ensuring protection and physical comfort. In recent years, the demand for smart materials and textiles has been increasing all around the world. Many investigations have been carried out into developing smart textiles that support the better performance of athletes. A smart textile is an intelligent system that is able to sense environmental conditions and electrical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and magnetic...

Abstract
Wastewater treatment plants are the most important release source of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) into the environment. This study aimed to identify β-lactam-resistance genes in Qom prov-ince municipal wastewater and also to determine the effect of municipal wastewater treatment plants with different processes on reducing these pollutants. Sampling was performed according to the standard protocol and at constant temperature conditions. Nine genes resistant to the six groups of β-lactam antibiotics were selected, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was performed to identify the presence/absence of ARGs. At the same time, real-time PCR test was also carried out to quantitatively...

Abstract
Short-term hydrothermal scheduling (STHTS) is a highly non-linear, multi-model, non-convex, and multi-dimensional optimization problem that has been worked upon for about 5 decades. Many research articles have been published in solving different test cases of STHTS problem, while establishing the superiority of one type of optimization algorithm over the type, in finding the near global best solution of these complex problems. This paper presents the implementation of an improved version of a variant of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO), known as Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) on three benchmark test cases of STHTS problems. The adaptive and variable nature of...

Abstract
Background: Comprehensive and comparable estimates of health spending in each country are a key input for health policy and planning, and are necessary to support the achievement of national and international health goals. Previous studies have tracked past and projected future health spending until 2040 and shown that, with economic development, countries tend to spend more on health per capita, with a decreasing share of spending from development assistance and out-of-pocket sources. We aimed to characterise the past, present, and predicted future of global health spending, with an emphasis on equity in spending across countries. Methods: We estimated domestic health spending for 195...
