, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jamshidi Hassanabadi, Ali (Author) ; Akbari, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research studies the feasibility of the BK7 optical glass milling process with ultrasonic vibrations. Due to the fragility of glasses, especially optical glasses, machining is very sensitive and complex. For this reason, it is necessary to think for the glass machiners to minimize the defects and failures of the process. So far, efforts have been made to reduce the defects caused by machining on brittle materials, such as increasing the speed of the period, reducing the feed rate of the tool, changing the geometry and the type of tool, the type of process lubrication, etc. In addition, other operations performed to improve the surface of the glass are of better quality, using hybrid or...

    , Article International Journal of Knowledge Management Studies ; Volume 2, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 426-444 ; 17438268 (ISSN) Qazvinian, V ; Sharif Hassanabadi, L ; Halavati, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Automatic text summarisation has long been studied and used. The growth in the amount of information on the web results in more demands for automatic methods for text summarisation. Designing a system to produce human-quality summaries is difficult and therefore, many researchers have focused on sentence or paragraph extraction, which is a kind of summarisation. In this paper, we introduce a new method to make such extracts. GeneticAlgorithm (GA)-based sentence selection is used to make a summary, and once the summary is created, it is evaluated using a fitness function. The fitness function is based on three following factors: Readability Factor (RF), Cohesion Factor (CF) and Topic-Relation...

Simulation of Water Inside Carbon Nanotubes

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sadeghi Hassanabadi, Mohsen (Author) ; Parsafar, Gholam Abass (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presents a research on the physical behavior of water inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Molecular simulations are carried out using the Monte Carlo method in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. Due to the difference between the inter-molecular forces in the axial and radial directions, the anisotropic pressure tensor is calculated for water confined inside the CNTs with the diameters of 0.88, 1.08, 1.28, and 1.48 nm at different densities using the Monte Carlo simulations. Using the assumption of effective extended Lennard-Jones interactions between the nearest neighbors, a set of new equations of state for water confined inside the CNTs is derived and shown to be...

    Abstract
In this article, OPSEM (Orthonormal Polynomial Series Expansion Method) is developed as a new computational approach for the evaluation of thin beams of variable thickness transverse vibration. Capability of the OPSEM in assessing the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with varying thickness is discussed. Multispan continuous beams with various classical boundary conditions are included. Contribution of BOPs (Basic Orthonormal Polynomials) in capturing the beam vibrations is also illustrated in numerical examples to give a quantitative measure of convergence rate. Furthermore, OPSEM is adopted for the forced vibration of a thin beam caused by a moving mass....

    Abstract
In this article, transverse vibration of an Euler-Bernoulli beam carrying a series of traveling masses is analyzed. A semi-analytical approach based on eigenfunction expansion method is employed to achieve the dynamic response of the beam. The inertia of the traveling masses changes the fundamental period of the base beam. Therefore, a comprehensive parametric survey is required to reveal the resonance velocity of the traversing inertial loads. In order to facilitate resonance detection for engineering practitioners, a new simplified formula is proposed to approximate the resonance velocity

    2017
    Abstract
A torsion test recently implemented for solid oxide fuel cell sealant materials is analyzed as a method for measuring the shear strength of sealant for solid oxide fuel cells. The finite element method is used to simulate the stress distribution in the hourglass-shaped steel specimens with intermediate sealant layer with different specimen's dimensions and configurations. Also, it is analyzed how stress concentration changes if the sealant does not completely fill the gap or is squeezed out of gap. The reduction of seal thickness to outer radius ratio results in an increase in stress concentration at the outer edge of sealant. The developed specimens with a hollow halve steel plate as well...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirjalili, Vahid (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the rapid development of mico-nano propulsion systems in micro-spacecrafts and micro-sattelites, precise investigation of flow field in these devices has become necessary. Micro propulsion systems usually have a thrust in order of mili Newton, and they can be used for maneuvers of spacecrafts with mass of less than 10 kg. Micro propulsion systems are usually classified according to their thrust generation mechanism to different classes like cold gas, and chemical propulsion systems. Cold gas micro propulsion systems obtain their energy from thermodynamic expansion of gas and not by combustion. If the flow fiel dimensionare comparable to mean free path, rarefaction effects are observed...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Behdad (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is well known that the most rigorous method to assess the performance and to predict the seismic demands of a structure subjected to earthquake is nonlinear time history analysis. However, this technique is accompanied by complexities and difficulties in evaluating the seismic demands of structures and requires superior knowledge and skill. As a result, in recent years, nonlinear static analysis has been proposed in performance based design procedures. One of the primary assumptions of nonlinear static procedures is that the behavior of a structure with multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) subjected to seismic ground motion can be estimated from the response of an oscillator with a single...

On the Dynamic Response of Funicular Shells and Evaluation of the Behavior Factor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kadivar, Amin (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic behavior of space structures are of great complexities. On the event of severe earthquake these structures exhibit high resistance and on the other hand, their high rigidity and small deformation makes it necessary to pay attention to their dynamic behavior, especially when combined with other types of structural systems. Also due to lack of sufficient codes and references, their dynamic behavior is still unknown to a great extend. Among these kinds of structures, reinforced concrete double curvature shells, and especially funicular shells, are much more important than others. In this thesis, dynamic response of these kind of structures, especially reinforced concrete domes, in...
