Distributed Encoding System in the Presence of Adversarial Sources
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Maddah Ali, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In communications systems, coding is used to combat channel errors. The redundancy introduced by coding enables the detection and/or correction of errors occurring in the channel. In addition to communications systems, coding is also beneficial in various other systems such as distributed storage systems and blockchain systems to cope with node failures, data erasures, and adversarial behaviors attempting to modify information. In existing applications of coding, it is generally assumed that the encoding operation is performed correctly and without errors, and errors are applied to the encoded data. In recent years, applications have emerged where the assumption of error-free encoding is not...
Application of Simulation Optimization in Buffer Allocation Problem Using Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Simulation optimization has been one of the most important topics in recent years. It is especially useful when the objective function cannot be computed directly or some of the parameters are stochastic. Buffer allocation problem is one of the important problems related to production lines. In this problem the objective is to determine the buffers between workstations so that the throughput is maximized. Non-linear and combinatorial nature of the problem, stochastic factors like machine breakdown or processing times and most importantly lack of a distinct relation for the objective function are the reasons of using simulation ...
Naïve Realism and its Metaphysical Considerations: A Question Based Approach to the Phenomenological Tradition
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taheri Khoram Abadi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
How is it possible for mind to be directed to the world? Or for it to be opened to the world? This question – formulated as the problem of knowledge - has been the central question of the modern philosophy. Rediscovering of the concept of "intentionality" as the mark of the mental by Franz Brentano, Contemporary philosophy succeeded in addressing this central question in a more direct and explicit a way. Intentional character of mind is more obvious in sensory experiences. Perception seems to be the minds openness to the world. But the possibility of having illusory or hallucinatory experiences challenges that very conception of perceptual experiences as openness. In analytic philosophy...
Big Data Application Performance Prediction and Heterogeneous Resource Recommendation in Cloud
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movaghar Rahim Abadi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the last years, we have seen a rapid growth of data generation that leads to an increasing need for data analysis and big data technologies. Meanwhile, cloud computing witnessed great popularity and has become one of the best platforms for big data analytics due to its flexibility and scalability. However, there is not an obvious method for choosing the right cluster configuration for running big data jobs in clouds. Because different big data applications, workloads and cloud configurations can lead to different costs. Moreover, a heterogeneous cluster can use the benefits of distinguished properties of each machine to reduce the cost and execution time of the big data application. The...
Elicitation and Aggregation of Experts’ Knowledge for Event Outcome Prediction
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor) ; Movaghar Rahim Abadi, Ali ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
Given an event O and a set of experts E, we describe a method for finding a subset of experts S whose aggregated opinions best predict the outcome of O. Therefor, the problem can be regarded as team formation for performing a prediction task. In order to estimate competency of each team we propose measure Sum Squared Error which uses experts’ records of predictions during past k days. For simplicity, opinion pooling is selected as the method of information aggregation. we prove in case of simple averaging of opinions, finding best team is NP-hard. we suggest some rounding and heuristic algorithms for finding near optimal solutions. Simulation results show that a variation of tabu search used...

Abstract
The instability of large diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) conveying fluid is investigated based on the molecular mechanics. Using the modal expansion for structural displacements, the governing equations of coupled fluid-structural dynamics of SWCNTs are derived. The natural frequencies and mode shape of the SWCNTs are obtained based on the molecular structural mechanics to account for the effect of chirality and discrete nature of SWCNTs. The results show that the vibrational behavior of large diameter SWCNTs conveying fluid is size dependent, but the effect of chirality is negligible. The obtained results are compared with the equivalent continuum-based model in the...
Continuous Matrix Product Ansatz for Studying 1+1 Quantum Field Theories
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimipour, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Naseh, Ali ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
In the last decade, the developement of Quantum Information theory have created new concepts and methods in the study of quantum many-body systems, that previously weren’t available to physicist involved in areas such as condensed matter and field theory. One of the most important steps is the insight provided by structure of the many body system’s Hilbert space. Although, it is not completed, it leads us to deep results. In fact, we have found out that with high probability, the state of a many-body system is located in a very small corner of the Hilbert space, which requires only a small number of parameteres to describe it, that with respect to the number of particles, it grows linearly...
Investigation of Rheological Behavior of Polymer on EOR in Carbonate Reservoir
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ramazani Saadat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Emadi, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The major objectives of this study are to analytically and experimentally investigate the rheological behavior of polymers in the fractured carbonate medium based on the polymer solution properties and operational conditions. The intrinsic and apparent viscosity of high molecular weight-partially hydrolyzed poly (acrylamide) which is mainly used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes hasbeen investigated in reservoir conditions. Since, the EOR efficiency of hydrolyzed poly (acrylamide) is very sensitive to the temperature and salinity of petroleumreservoirs; investigations have been carried out at different possible reservoirtemperatures using high saline polymer solutions. The parameters...

Abstract
This work studies the nonlinear oscillations of an elastic rotating shaft with acceleration to pass through the critical speeds. A mathematical model incorporating the Von-Karman higher-order deformations in bending is developed to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of rotors. A flexible shaft on flexible bearings with springs and dampers is considered as rotor system for this work. The shaft is modeled as a beam and the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is applied. The kinetic and strain energies of the rotor system are derived and Lagrange method is then applied to obtain the coupled nonlinear differential equations of motion for 6 degrees of freedom. In order to solve these equations...

Abstract
The abstract is the most important section of the thesis because many readers limit most of their reading to abstracts, saving in-depth reading for specific theses. It should give the reader a "preview" of what's to come. The abstract should emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. The purpose of the abstract is to allow researchers to decide whether or not to read the whole thesis. The abstract is what researchers read first to decide if the thesis is important, interesting, and it allows them to assess the relevance of a thesis to their own research, without having to read the entire thesis. Thus, it is crucial that the abstract both summarize succinctly the key...

Abstract
In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, we introduce the problem of distributed encoding which is comprised of a set of K ϵ isolated source nodes and N ϵ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of...

Abstract
Sharding, i.e. splitting the miners or validators to form and run several subchains in parallel, is known as one of the main solutions to the scalability problems of blockchains. The drawback is that as the number of miners expanding each subchain becomes small, it becomes vulnerable to security attacks. To solve this problem, a framework, named as Ployshard, has been proposed in which each validator verifies a coded combination of the blocks introduced by different subchains, thus helping to protect the security of all subchains. In this paper, we introduce an attack on Ployshard, called the discrepancy attack, which is the result of malicious nodes controlling a few subchains and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ramezani saadat abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbass (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, energy crises and the environmental pollution have become serious problems for the human being. To address these problems, extensive efforts have been made to replace fossil fuels with other clean energy resources such as fuel cells. In the meantime, polymer electrolyte fuel cells are very important as they are now commonly used in the field of transportation, and their importance become even more obvious as we consider the fact that the by-products from electricity production by such cells are simply water and heat. This research studies the efficiency of the polymer called “polysulfone” as an electrolyte fuel cell, which has the above named mechanical thermal and chemical...
A procedure for obtaining a behavioral description for the control logic of a non-linear pipeline
, Article Proceedings of the ASP - DAC 2004 Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference - 2004, Yokohama, 27 January 2004 through 30 January 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 86-91 ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Much attention has been directed to different aspects of the design of pipelines. Design of the control logic of non-linear pipelines has however, been considered as a subsidiary issue in that an RTL description for such logic can easily be obtained from a behavioral description, with the use of widely available synthesis tools. But, as the complexity of a non-linear pipeline increases, so does the complexity of the control logic. The complexity may be to an extent that obtaining even a behavioral description for the control logic is rendered difficult. This paper focuses on further automating the development of systems consisting of non-linear or multi-function pipelines by proposing an...

Abstract
Nowadays, according to increasing development of construction industry in the world especially in the building area, the need to use technology and innovation for fabrication and maintenance of this industry has increased. And this fact becomes apparent that the use of traditional systems of construction isn’t tailored the countries’ requirements anymore. One of the construction industry’s limitations is the restrictions on architectural designs reys. The columns are among the most important components of structure and have a major role in bearing all gravity and lateral loads and transferring them to the foundation. The failure or destruction of the components in the structure under applied...
