    Springer  2012
    Abstract
In this paper, the Nonlinear Normal Modes (NNMs) analysis for the case of three-to-one (3:1) internal resonance of a slender simply supported beam in presence of compressive axial load resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation is studied. Using the Euler- Bernoulli beam model, the governing nonlinear PDE of the beam's transverse vibration and also its associated boundary conditions are extracted. These nonlinear motion equation and boundary condition relations are solved simultaneously using four different approximate-analytical solution techniques, namely the method of Multiple Time Scales, the method of Normal Forms, the method of Shaw and Pierre, and the method of King and Vakakis. The...

    Abstract
In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic response of an inclined Timoshenko beam with different boundary conditions subjected to a traveling mass with variable velocity is investigated. The nonlinear coupled partial differential equations of motion for the bending rotation of cross-section, longitudinal and transverse displacements are derived using Hamilton's principle. These nonlinear coupled PDEs are solved by applying Galerkin's method to obtain dynamic response of the beam under the act of a moving mass. The appropriate parametric studies by taking into account the effects of the magnitude of the traveling mass, the velocity of the traveling mass with a constant acceleration/ deceleration...

    Abstract
Nanostructured molybdenum oxide having a particle size in the range of 30-80 nm was prepared by potentiodynamic electrodeposition method, and the effects of H2SO4 concentration on its capacitive behavior were studied by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Poor to fair capacitive behaviors were witnessed depending on the electrolyte concentration and conditions of charge/discharge. Increasing acid concentration to 0.02 M had favorable effect, while beyond that, the effect was detrimental. Capacitance around 600 F g-1 was recorded in the potential range of 0 to -0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl

    2011
    Abstract
Our previously reported mathematical model for a mixed oxide nanoparticulate-based supercapacitor containing RuO2·xH2O and MO2·yH2O (M being another suitable transition metal) was analyzed. Both double-layer and faradaic processes responsible for charge/discharge were considered. The effects of the intrinsic factors, unit cell length, state of charge, and the exchange current densities of the electrochemical processes of the constituents on the performance of the model supercapacitor were clarified. Compensation effects where each constituent compensates the shortcomings of the other at specific conditions of discharge are analyzed in the light of the model

    Abstract
A mathematical model was developed to describe the performance of nanoparticulate mixed oxide pseudocapacitors based on RuO 2-MO 2 (M being another suitable transition metal) under galvanostatic charge/discharge regime. Both double layer and faradaic processes were taken into account. The effects of the active material's particle size and composition were examined. Furthermore, the influence of discharge current on the extents of double layer and faradaic contributions was analyzed. The model analysis showed that the energy density declined upon increasing the volume fraction of larger particles. © 2008 Springer-Verlag

    Abstract
The factors influencing the electrochemical behaviour of a supercapacitor have been partly examined in this work. The effects of so-called intrinsic parameters, i.e. exchange current density, unit cell length and double layer (DL) capacitance; as well as the so-called application parameters, i.e. cell current, on the cell potential discharge time have been considered. The contributions of each type of capacitors, DL capacitor and faradaic supercapacitor under various states of operation and material have been analyzed, and the competing (compensating) effects of the two types of capacitors as regards to the discharge and power characteristics manifested by current-potential and energy-power...

    Abstract
Artificial neural network was used to calculate the performance of a model supercapacitor as signified by the power density, energy density and utilization to the synthetic, intrinsic and operating characteristics. A four-layer neural net having two hidden layers having 6 and 15 nodes was found to be well capable of simulating the capacitor performance with the convergence achieved often a relatively small number of epochs. As for the input parameters, crystal size, surface lattice length, exchange current density of the capacitor active material and the cell current employed while utilization, energy density and power density were the outputs. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract
Agglomerates of tungsten trioxide in the range of 90 nm to 1 μm are prepared by the acid precipitation method and characterized by XRD as well as scanning electron microscopy. The product when coated with platinum showed pseudocapacitance when in contact with acidic electrolyte in the potential range of 0. 1 to -0. 25 V/SCE. Capacitance in the range of 0. 014 to 0. 039 F cm-2 exhibiting moderate potential dependencies measured through both chronopotentiometry and impedance spectroscopy is presumed to be due to the insertion/de-insertion of protons into the lattice of tungsten trioxide. Equivalent circuit consisting of parallel simulators of mass transfer and capacitor charging...

Optimal Trajectory Correction for Hazardous Near-Earth Asteroids

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farsi, Salman (Author) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Sayyadi, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The collision of moderately large asteroids and comets also referred to as Near-Earth Objects (NEO's) with earth would have catastrophic consequences. Such events have occurred in the past and may occur again in the future. However, for the first time in known history, humanity may have the technology required to counter this threat. Methods studied for mitigation of this hazard are based on deflecting asteroid's trajectory and are normally divided into two basic categories: high energy impulsive methods, and long-duration low-thrust methods. Two parts of mission to be optimized are the trajectory of spacecraft to reach the target and the deflection strategy which could be analyzed by the...

    Abstract
In this article, smoothed particle hydrodynamics method is applied in order to study the free surface flow generated by two-dimensional planing flat plate. For this purpose, a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics code is developed and validated by the well-known dam breaking problem. Four trim angles and three different velocities are considered to perform a parametric study to examine their physical effects. The obtained results from smoothed particle hydrodynamics are compared against the corresponding Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes solutions. It is observed that at lower velocities, there exists a good agreement between the smoothed particle hydrodynamics and Reynolds-averaged...

    Abstract
In order to enhance the post-damage repair capability of the hybrid coupled shear wall systems, a different type of replaceable steel coupling beam with end-plate connection was investigated. Different from conventional configurations, the coupling beams were not embedded into the walls to minimize the post-event repair/replacement difficulties and expenses. To assess the seismic behavior and post-damage replaceability of the coupling beam, a two-stage experimental program was performed to test the full-scale specimens, each utilizing coupling beams with different strength and stiffness. The results of the first specimen indicated a ductile failure with a concentration of inelastic...

    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define a piecewise fatigue damage model (PFDM) for the prediction of damage in composite laminates under cyclic loading based on the continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model. Assuming that damage in fiber-reinforced plastic structures accumulates nonlinearly, a piecewise degradation growth function is defined and coupled with CDM and micromechanics approaches. The model divides the damage behavior of fiber, matrix, and fiber/matrix debonding at the ply scale, into three different stages. For generality, a fully multi-stage damage formulation on a single-ply level is employed. The unknown parameters of the PFDM are estimated according to obtained experimental...

    Abstract
High-temperature insulators protect structures against extreme thermal loads in various industries such as energy and space-related areas. For such insulations, radiation is the dominant mode of heat transfer. The intended multilayer high-temperature insulator utilizes reflection as the controlling mechanism for the radiative heat transfer. In the current study, the axiomatic design methodology is used to map the design process of a reflective multilayer high-temperature insulator. In addition, an analytical model is developed to simulate the combined radiation and conduction heat transfer in the reflective multilayer high-temperature insulator. The model was solved numerically and validated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farsi Nejad, Ali (Author) ; Khosravizade, Parvaneh (Supervisor) ; Shams Fard, Mehrnoosh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The main focus of this research is to resolve the semantic ambiguity in Persian. In this study, a semi-supervised machine learning method is proposed to choose the most proper meaning of a target word in the context. Several statistical methods are compared, and the most accurate one is chosen for developing a sense tagger. An initial seed data is built by searching collocation lists for each sense. After developing the sense tagger and initial seed set, a bootstrapping method is used to sense tag all occurences of a target word in corpus with 90% accuracy

    Abstract
An experimental setup has been developed to analyse the impact of cylinder transverse vibration caused by flow-induced vibration, and to improve wind energy harvesting from these vibrations. The setup consists of a cylinder mounted on four springs and is subjected to a uniform and steady flow of wind. In the first part, the effect of mounting a fixed cylinder as an obstacle with different diameters and distances from the downstream vibrating cylinder is investigated. It has been observed that the vibration amplitude on the wake of an unequal-sized obstacle is greatly amplified compared to the case of a single cylinder or an equal-sized cylinder. Numerical simulations has been conducted to...

    Abstract
Four 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-story moment frames, representing low-, mid-, and two high-rise structures, were subjected to a great number of idealized directivity pulses. The amplitudes and periods of pulses vary from 0.02 g to 1.0 g and 0.5 to 12 sec, respectively. Over 1400 nonlinear dynamic analyses of low- to high-rise moment frames were performed which were feasible through using modified fish-bone model. The distribution of interstory drift along the height was studied and two applied contours were proposed: (i) the maximum interstory drift contour, and (ii) the critical story contour. These contours were demonstrated versus the ratio of natural period of the structure to the pulse period...

    Abstract
In this article singular points of a parallel manipulator are obtained based on a novel geometrical method. Here we introduce the constrained plain method (CPM) and some of its application in parallel mechanism. Given the definition of constraint plane (CP) and infinite constraint plane (ICP) the dependency conditions of constraints is achieved with the use of a new theorem based on the Ceva geometrical theorem. The direction of angular velocity of a body is achieved by having three ICPs with the use of another theorem. Finally, with the use of the above two novel theorems singularities of the 3UPF_PU mechanism are obtained. It should be emphasized that this method is completely geometrical,...

    Abstract
An analytical model is proposed to study the effect of particle size on melting enthalpy and entropy of metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The Mott's and Regel's equations for melting entropy in the combination of core average coordination number (CAC) and surface average coordination number (SAC) of freestanding NPs are considered. Clusters of icosahedral (IC), body centered cubic (BCC), and body centered tetragonal (BCT) structure without any vacancies and defects are modeled. Using the variable coordination number made this model to be in good agreement with experimental and molecular dynamic (MD) results of different crystal structures. The model predicts melting entropy and enthalpy of...
