    Abstract
The effect of bulging of domain wall (DW) on the magnetoresistance (MR) is investigated. With taking into account the auto-correlation between the points of the interface, one can formulate the mobility within the relaxation time approximation scheme. The results show that the bulging of DW, evaluated with the commonly accepted magnetic parameters for typical ferromagnetic materials of Co, Fe and Ni, has a countable role into the MR

Flow and heat transfer analysis of turbine blade cooling passages using network method

    , Article ASME 2012 Gas Turbine India Conference, GTINDIA 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 523-531 ; 9780791845165 (ISBN) Alizadeh, M ; Izadi, A ; Fathi, A ; Khaledi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Modern turbine blades are cooled by air flowing through internal cooling passages. Three-Dimensional numerical simulation of these blade cooling passages is too time-consuming because of their complex geometries. These geometrical complexities exist as a result of using various kinds of cooling technologies such as rib turbulators (inline, staggered, or inclined ribs), pin fin, 90 and 180 degree turns (both sharp and gradual turns, with and without turbulators), finned passage, by-pass flow and tip cap impingement. One possible solution to simulate such sophisticated passages is to use the one-dimensional network method, which is presented in the current work. Turbine blade cooling channels...

    2010
    Abstract
The iterated perturbation theory (IPT) equations of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for the half-filled Hubbard model are solved on nearly real frequencies at various values of the Hubbard parameters, U, to investigate the nature of metal-insulator transition (MIT) at finite temperatures. This method avoids the instabilities associated with the infamous Padé analytic continuation and reveals fine structures across the MIT at finite temperatures, which cannot be captured by conventional methods for solving DMFT-IPT equations on Matsubara frequencies. Our method suggests that at finite temperatures, there is a crossover from a bad metal to a bad insulator in which the height of the...

Evaluation of long-term steel demand in developing countries- Case study: Iran

    , Article Resources Policy ; Volume 77 , 2022 ; 03014207 (ISSN) Kolagar, M ; Saboohi, Y ; Fathi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The present study evaluates the application of top-down steel demand estimation in developing countries. The anticipated steel demand for the case of Iran is calculated by three methods, including the growth model (GM), the intensity of use hypothesis (IUH), and the fixed stock paradigm (FCP). GM shows a broad range of apparent steel demand based on the assumed growth factor. When the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita reaches 13,000 dollars per person (constant 2010 US$), the IUH method estimates the consumption peak consumption at around 500 kg steel per capita per year, which is being expected between 2040 and 2060 depending on the economic growth assumptions. Since fluctuations in...

    Abstract
in this paper a new method for finding the distance between eyelids, in order to determine the open or closed state of eye, has been introduced. For this aim, first the gray scale image of eye region is converted into a binary image. Next, a differential variance projection function is applied on the binary image of eye region in horizontally direction to show the uppermost and lowest points on the eyelid edges. Having the distance between these two points, the distance between two eyelids will be obtained. This distance may be used as a criterion in recognizing the open or closed state of eye. We have used numerous and different images to evaluate the efficiency of the presented method, and...

    Abstract
Fuel Cell (FC) is one of the promising distributed generation resources which are based on renewable energies. Clean electricity generation, high efficiency and high energy density of the fuel cells make them attractive for lots of engineers. In this paper we discuss about the operational principles of fuel cell generally. Then, a circuit model of them will be introduced. Based on the model, we designed a novel DC/DC converter for supplying the fuel cell's load and simulated the design with using Matlab. The results say that its novel converter could conveniently supply the load and its needed power curve. ©2009 IEEE

Ultimate state boundedness of underactuated spacecraft subject to an unmatched disturbance

    , Article Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (Poland) ; Volume 55, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 1055-1066 ; 14292955 (ISSN) Moradi, R ; Alikhani, A ; Fathi Jegarkandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Polish Society of Theoretical and Allied Mechanics  2017
    Abstract
Ultimate state boundedness for underactuated spacecraft subject to large non-matched disturbances is attained. First, non-smooth time-invariant state feedback control laws that make the origin asymptotically stable are obtained. Then, the controller is extended to make the closed-loop system globally uniformly ultimately bounded under the following conditions: 1) the disturbances acting on the directly actuated states are known and 2) the disturbance acting on the unactuated state is bounded and its profile need not be known. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to verify the analytical results. A large step disturbance is considered, and it is shown that the proposed controller...

Reducing the effects of inaccurate fault estimation in spacecraft stabilization

    , Article Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management ; Volume 9, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 453-460 ; 19849648 (ISSN) Moradi, R ; Alikhani, A ; Fathi Jegarkandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reference Governor is an important component of Active Fault Tolerant Control. One of the main reasons for using Reference Governor is to adjust/modify the reference trajectories to maintain the stability of the post-fault system, especially when a series of actuator faults occur and the faulty system can not retain the pre-fault performance. Fault estimation error and delay are important properties of Fault Detection and Diagnosis and have destructive effects on the performance of the Active Fault Tolerant Control. It is shown that, if the fault estimation provided by the Fault Detection and Diagnosis (initial “fault estimation”) is assumed to be precise (an ideal assumption), the...

Optimal design of solar concentrator in multi-energy hybrid systems based on minimum exergy destruction

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 190 , 2022 , Pages 78-93 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Tavakol Moghaddam, Y ; Saboohi, Y ; Fathi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The paper presents a systematic approach to designing an imaging dish for a concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system to minimize exergy destruction. The designed CPV system uniformly distributes light rays on the receiver (TPV/multi-junction PV) to enhance the conversion technology efficiency and lifetime. To this end, a parametric dish is designed using imaging optics and the numerical solution of a differential equation. Afterward, a Monte Carlo simulation is used to estimate the output energy and exergy of the CPV system with the parametric dish. Finally, an optimization algorithm finds the optimal design parameters to minimize the system's exergy destruction. The optimal design leads to a...

    Abstract
This paper presents a formulation for in-plane modal characteristics of non-uniform thickness annular elliptic and circular plates for all classical boundary conditions. The investigations are performed for elastic and isotropic annular elliptic plates on the basis of two- dimensional linear plane stress theory of elasticity. Two-dimensional boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials (BCOP) are used in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to obtain the natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. The proposed method, not only can find solution for those simple cases of annular circular plates available in literature as a simplified case study, but also it finds some natural frequencies which can...

Multi-objective optimization in graceful performance degradation and its application in spacecraft attitude fault-tolerant control

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 69 , 2017 , Pages 465-473 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Moradi, R ; Alikhani, A ; Fathi Jegarkandib, M. F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reducing the burden of the remaining actuators through decreasing the performance gracefully is an important field in active fault tolerant control. According to the literature, two important points have been identified in the works considering graceful performance degradation: 1) using single-objective optimization, 2) assuming an engineering insight into the performance of the faulty system. This paper has two contributions: First, it is shown that in some cases, single-objective optimization may not be able to provide a satisfactory solution for the problem. Second, a new systematic and general method is proposed to remove the need for the engineering insight. The proposed method is based...

    2008
    Abstract
This paper presents a closed-loop laser cladding process used in nonplanar deposition of desired metallic materials. In the proposed system, the deposited layer geometry is continuously controlled via a sliding mode controller (SMC). The controller, which uses the scanning speed as the control input, is designed based on a parametric Hammerstein model. The model is a parametric dynamic model with several unknown parameters, which are identified experimentally using the recursive least squares method. The designed SMC is robust to all model parameters' uncertainties and disturbances. The results showed that the tracking accuracy improves and the chattering effect reduces if an integrator on...

Clad height control in laser solid freeform fabrication using a feedforward PID controller

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 35, Issue 3-4 , 2007 , Pages 280-292 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Fathi, A ; Khajepour, A ; Toyserkani, E ; Durali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, a feedforward proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is developed to effectively control the clad height in laser solid freeform fabrication (LSFF). The scanning velocity is selected as the input control variable and the clad height is chosen as the output. A novel knowledge-based Hammerstein model, including a linear dynamic and a nonlinear memoryless block, is developed, and its parameters are identified offline using experimental data. The architecture of the controller consists of a PID and a feedforward module, which is the inverse of the identified model. The advantage of adding a feedforward path to the PID controller is evaluated experimentally, in which the...
