Abstract
In discussions related to reliability optimization using redundancy allocation, one of the structures that has attracted the attention of many researchers, is series-parallel structure. In models previously presented for reliability optimization of series-parallel systems, there is a restricting assumption based on which all components of a subsystem must be homogeneous. This constraint limits system designers in selecting components and prevents achieving higher levels of reliability. In this paper, a new model is proposed for reliability optimization of series-parallel systems, which makes possible the use of non-homogeneous components in each subsystem. As a result of this flexibility,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini Kordkheili, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, composites are widely used in various industries, thus the study and analysis of properties and their behaviors are very important. In addition, the use of multi-layered composites in the aerospace industry is important. The composite-elastomer structures, specially their spherical shape, are widely used as flexible joint in aerospace industries, such as the thrust vector control system in solid-propellant rockets and the helicopter industry. In this study, an analytical approach is proposed for calculating the interlaminar stresses of laminated plates and spherical shells with arbitrary laminations and boundary conditions based on a threedimensional multi-term extended Kantorovich...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Eshraghniaye Jahromi, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In current societies, reliability is an important and fundamental factor in designing and manufacturing products and it cannot be ignored anyway; because sometimes malfunction and failure in a system can cause severe financial losses and health issues. In the field of optimizing reliability by redundancy allocation, one of the structures that has drawn many researchers attention is series-parallel structure. In the models proposed for reliability optimization in series-parallel systems, there is a restricting assumption which all components of a sub-system have to be homogeneous. In this thesis, new models are presented which enable components of a sub-system be non-homogeneous. Modeling is...

Abstract
A two-step pack cementation technique was used to cover nickel-based IN-738LC superalloy with a Cr-aluminide coating layer. The IN-738LC/Cr-aluminide samples were oxidized at 900 °C for 350 and 700 h, isothermally, and 175 and 350 h, cyclically. Each cycle lasted for 25 h. Effects of the isothermal and the cyclic oxidation on (a) morphology, (b) new-phase formation, (c) weight gain, and (d) oxidation reactions were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and weight gain measurements. From results, it was concluded that the oxygen attack was more severe during the cyclic oxidation than the isothermal procedure. Kinetics of the...

Abstract
Thermal-sprayed MCrAlY coatings have become widespread in various industries such as power plants, aeronautics, and oil and gas firms. High-temperature oxidation behavior of these coatings is therefore of significance. Spraying of two prevalent MCrAlY powders (NiCoCrAlY and CoNiCrAlY) on Hastelloy substrate by high velocity oxygen and fuel method and exposing them to 1000 °C air for resolving of their cyclic oxidation behavior are presented in this paper. The coatings were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The obtained oxidation kinetic indicated that at 1000 °C, the thermally sprayed NiCoCrAlY coating has greater...

Abstract
Sulfur components are one of the most important impurities in various petroleum fractions that cause many problems in refining and consumption. In this thesis, hydrodesulfurization process, which has an economical and environmental especial position in petroleum and other related industries, has been discussed. In hydrodesulfurization process, under specific operation condition, sulfur components are converted catalytically to the H2S in a fixed bed reactor. In this study dibenzothiophene, which is one of the most strength and complex sulfur components, is considered as the base component. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic equation is used to describe the reaction by using the commercial...
Energy of Graphs
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari Feizabadi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Fahmideh Gholami, Mahdi (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Energy of graphs first defined by Ivan Gutman in 1978[1]. Let G be a graph with (0,1)-adjacency matrix A and let λ_1≥⋯≥λ_n be eigenvalues of A. Grap h energy is defined as the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of A and is shown by ɛ(G). let H_1,…,H_k be the vertex-disjoint induced subgraphs of graph G, it is proved that energy of G is at least equal to the sum of energy of H_i subgraphs, where the summation is over i. Also by partitioning edges of G to L_1,…,L_k subgraphs, energy of G is at most equal to sum of energy of L_i subgraphs , where the summation is over i. In this thesi s we study energy of graphs, specially...

Abstract
A novel intelligent semi-active control system for an eleven degrees of freedom passenger car's suspension system using magnetorheological (MR) damper with neuro-fuzzy (NF) control strategy to enhance desired suspension performance is proposed. In comparison with earlier studies, an improvement in problem modeling is made. The proposed method consists of two parts: a fuzzy control strategy to establish an efficient controller to improve ride comfort and road handling (RCH) and an inverse mapping model to estimate the force needed for a semi-active damper. The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...
Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend
, Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...

Abstract
We introduce a new smooth, non-toxic, biocompatible method for cross-linking of gum tragacanth (GT), a polysaccharide of natural origin, in order to serve as a new supporting matrix for immobilization systems. The modified gum is used as a matrix for the catalysis of the conversion of benzyl penicillin to 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) by means of Escherichia coli ATCC11105 with penicillin G acylase (PGA) activity. The results show that GT beads can not only serve as a proper matrix for immobilization, but show enhanced hydrolysis rate and stability compared to other immobilization systems used for this reaction. This signifies the potential of GT as a biocompatible matrix for...

Abstract
The Class-E power amplifier has been widely studied and formulated in the literature. Although the majority of reported inductive coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) systems use a class-E power amplifier for driving the primary coil, still there is a lack of a comprehensive study on class-E circuit dedicated to WPT, providing a set of closed form design equations for proper class-E operation. This paper presents the required design equations needed to design a 'true' class-E circuit for WPT applications. Equations for the series-tuned secondary coil WPT system are presented, as well as two different design procedures for the parallel-tuned secondary coil. The derived equations have been...
