Abstract
As a result of adopting various sample preparation techniques and optical measurement strategies, there are different experimental datasets available for presenting the complex dielectric function of gold. Therefore, evaluating them and selecting the most reliable ones seem essential for the corresponding optical-based designs and applications. The Brendel-Bormann model, one of the most accurate theoretical models for rendering the complex dielectric function of materials, is considered an appropriate criterion for this purpose. Despite the model's computational complexity, MS Excel has been employed as a fast and accessible tool for calculating the model. According to the results, ‘Palik'...
Comparision of Single Service Call Admission Control Schemes in Cellular Mobile Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Beigy, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In single service wireless cellular networks, two types of call are defined; new call and handoff call. New call blocking probability and handoff call dropping probability are two major parameters of QoS. Some call admission control schemes are proposed for handling new and handoff calls in the cell for keeping these QoS parameters under suitable values. In this work, we will introduce some call admission control schemes and will show performance analysis, advantages and disadvantages of them (under different channel holding times and same channel holding times for new calls and handoff calls). Then we will focus on two schemes and based on their ideas, we will propose a new call admission...

Abstract
This paper presents an effective hybrid optimal modulation technique for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter. The introduced method is generalized optimal pulsewidth modulation, which can be extended to any m-level CHB multilevel inverter operating at any switching frequency. The presented hybrid optimal modulation strategy includes the pattern exchange and optimal modulation techniques. In the optimal modulation technique, the hybrid interior-point algorithm, which is more flexible and efficient than conventional optimization techniques, is applied. The proposed hybrid optimal modulation strategy yields balanced units' output fundamental voltages, and low total harmonic distortion...

An efficient tabu search algorithm for the single row facility location problem [electronic resource]
, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

Abstract
Human mind from system perspective deals with high dimensional complex world as an adaptive Multi-Input Multi-Output complex system. This view is theorized by reductionism theory in philosophy of mind, where the world is represented as logical combination of simpler sub-systems for human so that operate with less energy. On the other hand, Human usually uses linguistic rules to describe and manipulate his expert knowledge about the world; the way that is well modeled by Fuzzy Logic. But how such a symbolic form of knowledge can be encoded and stored in plausible neural circuitry? Based on mentioned postulates, we have proposed an adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy machine in order to model a rule-based...

Abstract
In this paper a new probabilistic view to the Visual Secret Sharing (VSS) is presented and as a result, a new VSS scheme is proposed. The proposed scheme is a threshold scheme with perfect black pixel reconstruction. We present the scheme by introducing two sets C0 and C1. We consider an unknown probability distribution on the elements of C0 and C 1. Perfectness provides some linear constraints on the probabilities of C0 and C1 elements. By solving the provided system of linear equations, the probability distributions are specified and we achieve a perfect VSS scheme. ©2008 IEEE

Abstract
In systems with hysteresis behavior like magnetic cores, Piezo actuators, Shape Memory Alloy(SMA), we essentially need an accurate modeling of hysteresis either for design or performance evaluation; also in some control applications accurate system identification is needed. One of the famous methods of Hysteresis modeling is Preisach model. In this numerical method hysteresis is modeled by linear combination of smaller hysteresis loops as an elemental operator and local memory. In this paper we discuss those Radial Base artificial neural networks (RBF) which provides natural settings in accordance with the Preisach model. It is shown that the proposed approach can represent hysteresis...

Abstract
Active Learning Method (ALM) is a powerful fuzzy soft computing tool, developed originally in order to promote an engineering realization of human brain. This algorithm, as a macro-level brain imitation, has been inspired by some behavioral specifications of human brain and active learning ability. ALM is an adaptive recursive fuzzy learning algorithm, in which a complex Multi Input, Multi Output system can be represented as a fuzzy combination of several Single-Input, Single-Output systems. SISO systems as associative layer of algorithm capture partial spatial knowledge of sample data space, and enable a granular knowledge resolution tuning mechanism through the learning process. The...

Abstract
By locating a steel shear panel on the intersection point of the X-braces, concentrically or eccentrically braced shear panel (CBFSP or EBFSP) is formed. In this paper, to perform parametric study, 1-story CBFSP and EBFSP models with span length greater or less than height are considered. Using linear static analyses, the effects of size and location of the shear panel on the lateral stiffness of the frame with respect to the moment resisting frame with the same member sections are investigated. Next, for 1- And 3-story models, maximum displacement, along with base shear, and the ratio between the dissipated energy and input energy are examined under 4 ground motion records. Behavior of the...
Assessment of Seismic Retrofit Policies for Buildings
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake could seriously damage most buildings especially those with insufficient resistance located in urban worn-out textures. In order to reduce unpleasant consequences of an earthquake, appropriate policies need to be considered to persuade the beneficiaries to follow retrofitting standards in the process of planning, designing, and construction of buildings. These policies shall be implemented through institutions in arbitrary or obligatory forms, by encouragement or penalty mechanisms. In order to consider these policies, first of all we need to identify the beneficiaries and their particulars. By studying and considering subjects discussed in...

Abstract
Due to the vulnerability of urban fabric and residential buildings to earthquakes and considering its destructive social and economic effects on society, the need to adopt appropriate policies to prevent and reduce vulnerability, has been increasingly considered by policy makers. Despite the laws, regulations, incentives and penalties that policymakers have envisioned to prevent unprincipled and unsafe construction, evidence shows that a significant number of new buildings being built in the country are not earthquake resistant and there are many violations in design, implementation and supervision that is done by the stakeholders. To solve this problem, research has been done on the...
Development of a Multi-functional Soil Column for Studying Bioremediation and Multiphase Flow
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sadeghi, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Soil and water pollution is one of the most common types of pollution in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The development of mines and the oil and petrochemical industry on one hand and the non-compliance with environmental requirements on the other hand have caused large amounts of hydrocarbon pollutants and heavy metals to enter the environment in recent decades. Petroleum materials and heavy metals leak into the surrounding environment during drilling and extraction in oil sites and mines or during land and sea transportation, despite the measures taken to control their pollution. The conducted studies show that human industrial activities are the only cause of environmental pollution...
