Experimental Study on the Efficiency of Memberane Bioreactor (MBR) in Removal of Trace Persistent Pollutants
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Vosoughi, Manuchehr (Supervisor) ; Hesampour, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The removal of glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicide, with membrane bioreactor (MBR) was studied. Beside of glyphosate, the synthetic wastewater contained molasses and other salts as nutrient source. The membrane was made from polypropylene and was immersed in the bioreactor. The COD of the feed was adjusted by varying the ratio of glyphosate to molasses. The total COD was 500, 750 and 1000 mg/L. The resulted showed that when the bioreactor coupled with membrane the removal efficiency increased. The increase was attributed to higher concentration of biomass or MLSS in the MBR. The average of MLSS in the MBR was 8500 mg/L while in bioreactor without cell recycling and in batch...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Arhami, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
The PM2.5 particles are considered as one the most important pollutants of Tehran’s air due to their undesirable effect on health and environment. The particular matters which are in Tehran’s air are distributed from different sources. Because of lack of sufficient data about amount and chemical compounds of such matters in different areas, this study considers only concentration of particular matter and their composing elements in Sharif University, Tehransar, Mahalati, and Shahriyar station. By use of field measuring between 2015 to 2016 mass concentration of PM2.5 pollutant was calculated and then with the help of IC, GC/MS, and ICP chemical analysis which were conducted in University of...
Numerical investigation of second throat exhaust diffuser performance with thrust optimized parabolic nozzles
, Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 105 , 2020 ; Farahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Elsevier Masson SAS
2020
Abstract
Free or restricted shock separation phenomena can occur inside a thrust optimized parabolic (TOP) nozzle during over-expanded operations. In the case of restricted shock separation, a cap shock pattern forms in the nozzle which leads to a substantial total pressure drop. This induces further related issues in the process of ground testing of such nozzles using a second throat exhaust diffuser (STED). In the present study, the flow physics in several TOP nozzles operating at over-expanded conditions is investigated numerically. At first, the strong effect of the initial expansion angle of a TOP nozzle on flow separation pattern and shock structure is demonstrated. Results reveal that for high...

Abstract
When today’s aircrafts reach the end of their service lifes, fatigue cracks are found to have developed along rivet holes and other highly stressed regions of the aircraft. In order to extend life of these aircrafts, repairs have been made to arrest these cracks. Composite repair patches provide an innovative repair technique, which can enhance the way aircrafts are maintained. In this thesis, composite patch design is presented based on axiomatic design technique. Axiomatic design is investigated design methodology for large or complex system design. Tools to enable successful application of axiomatic design are expressed as axioms and process for axiomatic system design. The patch design...
Optimization of Aerodynamic Performance of a Transonic Axial Compressor Rotor Blade Using Shock Control Bump
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, the axial transonic compressors are used widely in aircraft engines, oil and gas industry and etc. because of higher pressure ratio and more efficiency than the other compressors. The Major part of losses in transonic compressors is due to shock waves. In this study the idea of using Shock Control Bump as a passive flow control method has been used for weakening the shock waves. The Shock Control Bump is modeled with the Hicks-Henne function and added to the suction side of a section of the NASA rotor 67 blade. Validation of flow solver is done in both two and three dimensions. Single-point and multi-point optimizations are performed in the design condition and in two off-design...
An Implicit Algorithm for Numerical Simulation of Large Deformation Structures with Incompressible Fluid Flow
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
The fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems are widely encountered in many industrial applications in mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, marine, and wind engineering. The main contributions of this research are focused on simulating flow with moving or deforming boundaries including FSI problems with large movement or deformations. In this regard, a hybrid finite-element-volume (FEV) method was used in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. In this research, a new layer-by-layer mesh movement strategy was developed to perform the unstructured grid movement more robustly. This strategy converts the complex data structure of an unstructured grid to a simple quasi-structured data...
Long-Term Analysis of Water Balance Components and Water Level Changes of Lake Urmia using a Combination of Field aAnd Remote Sensing Data
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Safaie, Ammar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, global salt lakes have faced severe environmental challenges. Lake Urmia, the world’s second-largest hyper saline lake, is located in the northwest of Iran, has experienced a significant shrinkage in last years. Lake Urmia is a terminal lake where water enters through precipitation and rivers inflow and loses through evaporation. Analysis of long-term trends (1990-2018) using the Mann-Kendall test indicates no significant trend in precipitation, an increasing trend in evaporation, and a decreasing trend in river discharge. However, precipitation during 1990-1999 (beginning of accelerated lake drying) showed a decreasing trend. An investigation of the correlation between...

Multi-objective Optimization of a Megawatt Wind Turbine Blade Geometry Using an Evolutionary Algorithm
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Without optimization, it is impossible to reduce the cost of power generation from an efficient megawatt wind turbine. In this work, we present a multi-objective algorithm to optimize the megawatt blade geometry. In this algorithm, the mass of blade and the wind turbine annual energy production (AEP) are considered as the objective functions. The design variables are blade chord, blade twist, airfoil thickness, spar geometry and blade curvature distribution. The constraints are maximum allowable strain for the chosen materials, maximum tip deflection and maximum tip speed. For the internal geometry, we consider two spars and four panels. The blade element momentum method (BEM) is used for...
Numerical Simulation and Optimization of Sea Water Desalination by Reverse Osmosis Membrane
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Reverse osmosis (RO) is by far the most widely used membrane desalination process worldwide. The RO process depends on the properties of semi-permeable membranes which allow the separation of water from a salt solution by applying external pressure higher than the osmotic pressure on the seawater. The main problem in membrane separation process is the fouling of the membrane walls, which decreases the permeate flux. Having spacer filaments in the feed channel has been proven to dynamically change the concentration boundary layer and preventing fouling. The impact of spacer configurations (cavity, zigzag and submerged) on the alleviation of concentration polarization and the enhancement of...

Abstract
In this paper, the Extended Kalman filtering (EKF) approach has been used to infer gene regulatory networks using time-series gene expression data. Gene expression values are considered stochastic processes and the gene regulatory network, a dynamical nonlinear stochastic model. Using these values and a modified Kalman filtering approach, the model's parameters and consequently the interactions amongst genes are predicted. In this paper, each gene-gene interaction is modeled using a linear term, a nonlinear one, and a constant term. The linear and nonlinear term coefficients are included in the state vector together with the gene expressions' true values. Through the extended Kalman...

, Article 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 4 January 2010 through 7 January 2010, Orlando, FL ; 2010 ; 9781600867392 (ISBN) ; Darbandi, M ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
This paper presents an advanced grid adaptation strategy to be used by unstructured grid users. The idea behind this strategy originates from the need for automatic control of computational grids during iterative procedures utilized by fluid flow solvers. This strategy eliminates unnecessary grid computations by dividing the unstructured grid into active and inactive zones automatically. The active zones are extended automatically in order to capture the propagation of disturbances in solution domain. In this work, we focus to solve the grid deformations which are imposed in some portions of the main body and are propagated into computational domain during the iterative solutions. To achieve...

Abstract
A very simple and computationally low cost numerical algorithm is developed to generate a quasi-structured data structure for an unstructured grid. To achieve this purpose, the data structure in the matrices of an unstructured grid is classified to address the element layers and node lines in the computational domain. In this regard, elements and nodes of the unstructured grid are renumbered in a directional ordering-based strategy. The elements and nodes arrangement in each layer and line is accomplished in a unique direction around an interior object of the grid either clockwise or counterclockwise. Furthermore, a new searching scheme is introduced which guarantees a quick search inside...

Abstract
In the present study, the experimental analysis of a second-throat exhaust diffuser (STED) performance has been conducted for the high altitude test of a parabolic bell-type nozzle. The diffuser starting performance has been explored considering two different approaches, namely the gradual and instantaneous increase of the nozzle chamber pressure. Also, the influence of pre-evacuating the internal regions of the system on the diffuser starting performance has been studied. Numerical simulations have been carried out to have more physical insight into some test results. It is demonstrated that the non-dimensional hysteresis range in STED starting performance with a bell-type nozzle is up to 4...

Abstract
In this work, a new method is presented to control the propagation of the boundary deformation within an unstructured mesh domain effectively and to avoid inefficient and unnecessary grid movement computations. In this regard, a new and simple automatic unstructured mesh ordering strategy is developed. The mesh movement algorithm automatically determines the regions, which are affected by the displacement propagation. The method needs little memory storage benefiting from an improved mesh data structure. We also present an improved acceleration strategy, which is highly consistent with the modified connectivity matrix and is able to handle a wide variety of problems with small and large...

Abstract
Maintenance costs in airlines change as time passes. As airplane ages, it needs more often and more expensive checks. Due to these growing expenses, airlines are getting more interested in cost analysis. Under financial pressure, they avoid buying new airplanes and try to maintain the old ones, but sometimes try to cut the maintenance costs by ignoring or delaying some checks. In other words, they are more disposed to spend small amount of money frequently through time, than to spend a great deal on a new airplane with low maintenance costs. Therefore, in such situations, the following questions raise that what solution is more efficient as we look dynamically to the system? For answering...

Abstract
In recent decades, population growth, agricultural development and climate change have caused environmental problems in the world, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions such as Iran. Urmia Lake, one of the unique biosphere reserves of the world, has suffered from these problems in the last 20 years. Although many studies conducted to the negative impacts of human-induced activities, especially agricultural expansion on the lake, few studies focused on providing restoration plans for that. This study uses a system dynamics method for modelling the restorations scenarios of Urmia Lake based on the prey-predator approach. This method is helpful to simplify the complicated feedbacks and...
Unification of Higher-Order Patterns for Dependent Types
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ardeshir Bahrestaghi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Immensity and profundity of mathematical logic have provided an opportunity for its interconnection with other branches of science, one of which is computer science where theory of dependent types and lambda calculus lounges amongst the area of their overlap. The former has been engendered for the sake of deepening the connection between mathematical logic and programming. On the other side, lambda calculus which is a formal system in mathematical logic and computer science, developed as a tool for formal computations, could also be counted as a programming discipline. It is the objective of this thsis to study the two aforementioned fields with emphasis on unification of higher-order...

Abstract
Ways to reduce an airline's cost has been studied for years. In fact, in order to achieve this goal, ones need to know different types of airline's costs including; fuel and oil, maintenance, Ticketing, passenger services, etc. and their impact on the total cost of an airline. According to announcement of ICAO [1], "maintenance cost (about 11% of total cost) is the second major cost after fuel and oil". Therefore, this may attract airline owners' attention to find ways to control maintenance cost and eventually the total cost of an airline. Though, there are many systematic approaches to analyze cost reduction and making policies, in this article, SD modeling is applied to develop a...

Abstract
Recently, remote sensing considered as important tool in studies of water quality issues. The Aras River flows across a transboundary basin in northern Iran. In this study, the aim is to model the water quality parameters (WQPs) using remote sensing and an artificial neural network (ANN), which is a new method proposed to find WQPs based on multivariate regression approaches. The relationship between WQPs and digital data from the Sentinel-2 satellite was determined to estimate and map the WQPs in this river. Using the field data and digital image data, the obtained results show that multivariate regression approaches and high-resolution remote sensing could monitor and predict the...
