Abstract
In the realization of adaptive beamforming algorithms, the least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm had been the most popular scheme used for Smart Antenna systems. This Paper proposes an alternate scheme in the form of the Normalized LMS (NLMS) algorithm with active tap detection for WCDMA systems. By taking advantage of spatial filtering, the proposed scheme promises to reduce the bandwidth required for transmitting data by improving convergence rate. The performance of the Frequency Domain NLMS algorithm in the presence of multipath effects and multiple users is analyzed using simulations. This analysis is compared to that of LMS algorithm and suggests improvement in the convergence rate and...

Abstract
Past earthquakes had shown vulnerability of infill walls especially under out of plane (OOP) loading. Although some new infill walls show a good OOP performance, generally, they do not have the right economic justification or have complexity in construction. Therefore, in this paper, an innovative economical infill wall is presented that is not complicated in construction. The proposed wall constructed by light expanded clay aggregate in especial shape that reinforced with side plates, top, and bottom rebars. Experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate its seismic performance. Experimental results showed a high continuity between blocks of wall due to its especial...

Abstract
Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have shown a desirable performance in experimental studies and past earthquakes. The advantages of the SPSW and its good performance against lateral loads persuade designers to utilize the system in their practical projects. Some important aspects of the SPSW have remained unknown in spite of valuable experimental and numerical studies. One of these unknown characteristics is the effect of cracks on the SPSW behavior. Several experimental studies have reported fracture in SPSW due to crack propagation during testing, but the experimental studies have not investigated the crack effect. Due to low thickness of steel plate and inherence of crack, the crack...

Abstract
In spite of existing comprehensive studies on the behavior of steel plate shear wall (SPSW), some aspects of the SPSW have remained unknown, yet. One of the important aspects that is unknown is the crack effect on the SPSW behavior in linear and nonlinear zones. Some experimental studies have been reported that SPSWs were fractured due to crack propagation. Therefore, the crack effect on the behavior of SPSW should be accounted in considering of SPSW behavior. Although the effect of crack on the thin SPSW has been investigated to a limited extent numerically, stiffened SPSPW, especially diagonally stiffened SPSW, has not been studied. In doing so, in this paper, the effect of crack effect on...
Mullins-Herring Equation with Lateral Growth
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Moghimi Araghi, Saman (Supervisor)
Abstract
Surface growth have been one of the most interesting topics of research in non-equilibrium Statistical physics, due to their relevance in studying industrial growth processes. Many models such as Edwards-Wilkinson and KPZ have been proposed to study these systems where by incorporating renormalization group, numerical integration and computer simulations we can derive their critical exponents. In general, a thermal noise is implemented in these models, however, other types can be used as well. In particular for the case of Edwards-Wilkinson, it has been shown that a multiplicative noise changes the universality class of the model. In this thesis we want to investigate the effects of...
Improving the performance of concentrically braced frame utilizing an innovative shear damper
, Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 182 , 2021 ; 0143974X (ISSN) ; Shayanfar, M ; Ghamari, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Concentrically braced structures are one of the most common resistant systems in steel structures due to their high stiffness and lateral strength. However, when these structures are subjected to moderate and severe earthquakes, their compression member begins to buckle. Also, buckling of compression members in Concentrically Braced Frames (CBFs) decreases ductility and degradation of the hysteresis curve. Numerous studies have been performed to improve the behavior of CBFs. Using steel dampers is considered one of the appropriate ways to improve the behavior of CBFs. Although steel dampers improve the hysteretic behavior of the CBFs, they impose additional costs on structures. Therefore, in...

Abstract
Current seismic design codes use lateral load distributions that do not consider 3D structural behavior, nonlinear structural state, and soil-structure interaction. Moreover, calculated seismic force does not reflect the energy content of the earthquake and record-to-record variability in its lateral distribution. This research proposes a new design procedure for steel structures that reach nonlinear state to address the mentioned shortcomings. First, nine 3D 6-story steel structures in 3 different soil types and three different structural systems are analyzed under 12 earthquakes for each soil type. Soil-structure interaction is taken into account using the cone model. Then, the general...

Abstract
Passive steel dampers have shown favorable performance in last earthquakes, numerical and experimental studies. Although steel dampers are more affordable than other types of damper, they are not economically justified for ordinary buildings. Therefore, in this paper, an innovative steel damper with shear yielding mechanism is introduced, which is easy to fabricate also can be easily replaced after sever earthquakes. The main goal of implementing such a mechanism is to control the possible damage in the damper and to ensure the elastic behavior of other structural components. The numerical results indicate an enhancement of the hysteretic behavior of the concentrically braced frames...

Abstract
This study investigates the roll decay of a fishing vessel by experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. A fishing vessel roll decay is tested experimentally for different initial roll angles. The roll decay is also simulated numerically by CFD simulations and is validated against the experimental results. It shows that the roll damping could be obtained by CFD with high level of accuracy. The linear and nonlinear damping terms are extracted from the CFD roll decay results and are used in a potential-based solver. In this way we are using a hybrid solver that benefits the accuracy of the CFD results in terms of roll damping estimation and the fast computations of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Dehghani Firouzabadi, Ruhollah (Supervisor) ; Amirzadegan, Sadegh (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Multi-part rotating parts are used in various industries with very high revolutions. Therefore, the method of assembling each part and keeping the axis of rotation of each part close to the axis passing through two supports (bearings) is important. In this research, three main steps are followed, the development of the differential equations governing the multi-part rotating system and the calculation of the range of oscillations created at the critical points, and then the calculation of the optimal assembly angles with the aim of reducing the introduced oscillations, and finally the discussion of crossing the speeds A crisis is being investigated. The method of obtaining the system of...

Abstract
Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty...

Abstract
Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results...

Abstract
Background: Combating viral hepatitis is part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and WHO has put forth hepatitis B elimination targets in its Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis (WHO-GHSS) and Interim Guidance for Country Validation of Viral Hepatitis Elimination (WHO Interim Guidance). We estimated the global, regional, and national prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), as well as mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to HBV, as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. This included estimates for 194 WHO member states, for which we compared our estimates to WHO elimination targets. Methods: The primary...

Abstract
Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then...
