    Abstract
Along with the development of social and economical development and expansion of urban areas the rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation has been increased. Waste-to-Energy technologies consist of any waste treatment process that enables generating energy from a waste source. In recent years many studies have shown that plasma gasification has a considerable potential as an effective method for solid waste treatment and energy recovery. Plasma gasification converts MSW to a clean syngas and its application could reduce MSW volume and the environmental risks of waste landfill. In the present study the methods of waste conversion to energy has been reviewed, then plasma gasification of...

Analyzing IoT System Using Location-Base Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghandi Jalvani, Ali (Author) ; Gholampour, Iman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, using different types of data has shown significant impacts on analyzing the related systems. Growth in data volume, systems complexity and existence of error and obscurity in collecting the data, increased the necessity of inventing new data analysis methods. Location-based data is an important data type for such analyses which are collected from sensors in different places. These data besides other official organization's information like municipality or Google … provide us a bulk volume of raw data. Such collections of raw data are mostly diverse, heterogeneous, bulk and outspread. Inspite of that, raw data with machine learning algorithms lead to considerable practical...

, Article Proceedings of the International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems ; 2013 , Pages 718-722 ; 21540217 (ISSN) ; 9783800735297 (ISBN) Eghbalian Arani, S ; Behroozi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this work, we study the performance of polar codes for lossy compression of a Gaussian source with a side information at decoder; known as the quadratic-Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. First we extend the binary polar codes to q-ary for the Wyner-Ziv problem. We show that the nested q- Ary polar codes are optimal for this case. Then we present two polar coding schemes for the Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. In the first scheme, we achieve a rate above the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function with a gap of 0.5 bits compared with the optimal rate. This scheme utilizes a successive cancellation decoder and is optimal in weak side-information cases when the decoder side-information noise variance is...

    Abstract
In this work, we study the lossy source coding of a Gaussian source with polar codes. We show through two distributions on discrete alphabet, quantized approach as well as Central Limit Theorem (CLT) approach, when the alphabet size grows to infinity, polar codes can achieve the rate distortion bound for a Gaussian source. By comparing the rate of convergence on two distributions, we show that the quantized approach have a better convergence rate than the CLT approach

    , Article Signal Processing ; Volume 88, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 624-638 ; 01651684 (ISSN) Ghandi, M ; Jahani Yekta, M. M ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper an iterative method for recovery of the missing samples of signals is investigated in detail, and some novel linear, nonlinear, and adaptive extrapolation techniques are proposed to be used along with it to increase the convergence rate of the recovery system. The proposed methods would remarkably speed up the convergence rate, save processing power, and reduce the delay of the system compared to some well known accelerated versions of the aforementioned iterative algorithm. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. , Article Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering; Technology Driving Innovation, 2004, Niagara Falls, 2 May 2004 through 5 May 2004 ; Volume 4 , 2004 , Pages 2021-2024 ; 08407789 (ISSN); 0780382536 (ISBN) Ghandi, M ; Ghandi, M. M ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In this paper a new context modelling scheme for arithmetic coding of Motion Vectors (MVs) is proposed. The model uses the correlation between the horizontal and vertical components of MVs to improve the probability estimation of symbols. The accurate probability estimation can therefore improve the efficiency of the context-based arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has been adapted to the H.264 advanced video codec and the simulation results show that a considerable bit rate saving can be achieved in MV coding

    Abstract
We demonstrate the large deviation property for the mild solutions of stochastic evolution equations with monotone nonlinearity and multiplicative noise. This is achieved using the recently developed weak convergence method, in studying the large deviation principle. An Itô-type inequality is a main tool in the proofs. We also give two examples to illustrate the applications of the theorems

    Source Coding with Polar Codes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eghbalian Arani, Sajjad (Author) ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polar codes were introduced by Arikan in 2009. These codes are the first family of codes that with low encoding complexity and successive cancellation decoder, can achieve the channel capacity. Polar codes, at first were implemented for channel coding, but in 2010 performance of these codes in binary and q-ary alphabet source was studied. It is shown that these codes can perform efficiently in channel coding and source coding. On the other hand, one of the most important continuous sources are Gaussian sources. Due to the importance of Gaussian sources and good performance of polar codes, we try to evaluate the performance of these codes in Gaussian sources. Note that, these codes have...

    Abstract
Fired heaters are large and complex items used in process plants. Tubular furnaces used mainly in chemical, petrochemical, and refinery process plants. For many process plants, the fired heater performance will determine process unit run-length. High tube metal temperature and coking in the process-fired heaters is one of the serious problems of process plants. Coke forms because the oil in tubes is no longer thermally stable at the operating conditions. Oil film temperature in the inside wall of tube somewhere that, process fluid has highest temperature and lowest velocity. Therefore, process fluid peak film temperature will determined rate of coke formation. This temperature is dependent...

    Abstract
Nowadays web services composition that presents capabilities in response to customers' complex requirements has a special importance in real businesses. However, service choreography as a form of service composition, still faces many challenges. One of the most important challenges of the choreography domain is how to validate the model based on the corresponding requirements. To this end, in this paper processes choreographies are modeled using the interaction view of BPMN 2.0 standard. Then, goal modeling is suggested to extract the requirements. For each requirement all possible valid scenarios are considered and finally using Savara tool, the requirements' scenarios are modeled and the...

Conformational study of a strained tolanophane by dynamic 1H NMR spectroscopy and computational methods

    , Article Monatshefte fur Chemie ; Volume 139, Issue 10 , 2008 , Pages 1185-1189 ; 00269247 (ISSN) Darabi, H. R ; Azimzadeh Arani, M ; Tafazzoli, M ; Ghiasi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The existence of a short C-H⋯π (alkyl-alkyne) interaction in the structure of a strained and relatively rigid tolanophane is expected to hinder the rotation about the C-C sp3 single bond. Variable-temperature NMR experiments (performed in three solvents, CDCl3, THF-d8, and acetone-d6) and ab initio density functional calculations were carried out to investigate its dynamic nature. An energy barrier of 48.6 kJ/mol is determined at coalescence (210 K) with acetone-d6 which is in good agreement with calculation result (54 kJ/mol). © 2008 Springer-Verlag

    Abstract
Large deviation principle (LDP) for stochastic differential equation is one of the interesting and modern topics in stochastic analysis. Principally, this theory gives the rate of convergence to the solution of the corresponding deterministic equation when the noise tends to zero. The study of LDP for SDE’s has been initiated by M. Freidlin and A. Wentzell and then has been considered by many other researchers. Freidlin andWentzell divided the interval [0, T] to small subintervals and considered the diffusion coefficient as a constant on any small subintervals. Then the problem is reduced to the additive noise case. But using the contraction principle, the study of LDP for an equation with...
