    2006
    Abstract
A numerical procedure is proposed for obtaining the static deflection, pull-in (PI) deflection and PI voltage of electrostatically excited capacitive microcantilever beams. The method is not time and memory consuming as Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Nonlinear ordinary differential equation of the static deflection of the beam is derived, w/wo considering the fringing field effects. The nondimensional parameters upon which PI voltage is dependent are then found. Thereafter, using the parameters and the numerical method, three closed form equations for pull-in voltage are developed. The results are in good agreement with others in literature. Abstract
Bond durability of FRP bars and concrete is an important issue to the overall integrity and long-term performance of a strengthening structure. This paper examines the bond durability of GFRP bars embedded in different types of concrete (Normal, self-compacting, light weight, and high strength) exposed to aggressive environments, namely, sea water, alkaline, and acid. A total of 132 specimens were tested in direct pull-out. The development lengths of both control and conditioned specimens were obtained and compared to the current standards. The results revealed bond strength reductions of 0–21% for the light weight, 1–16% for the normal, 5–9% for the high strength, and 4–12% for the...

    Abstract
The differential equation governing the motion of an electrically excited capacitive microcantilever beam is a nonlinear PDE [1]. Accurate analysis about its motion is of great importance in MEMS' dynamical response. In this paper first the nonlinear 4th order 2 point boundary value problem (ODE) governing the static deflection of the system is solved using three methods. 1. The nonlinear part is linearized and its exact solution is obtained. 2. For low applied DC voltages (not near pull-in) the solutin is found using the direct straight forward perturbation analysis. 3. Numerical computer solutions which are used for the previous solution's verifications. The next parts are devoted to the...

    Abstract
Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) have wide application in the development of sensors for the detection of magnitudes in almost any domain [1]. Resonant mode operation of micro and nano-scale oscillators have gained wide interest for applications including filters, amplifiers, non-linear mixers, atomic scale imaging, biological and chemical sensors. The device that we propose is an electrically actuated microcantilever beam. More precisely, in our design the microcantilever constitutes the movable plate of a micro-capacitor and its displacement is controlled by the voltage applied across the plates. Review of literature shows that the electric field pattern between the beam and the...

Deflection amplification factor for estimating seismic lateral deformations of RC frames

    , Article Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration ; Volume 14, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 373-384 ; 16713664 (ISSN) Samimifar, M ; Vatani Oskouei, A ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Different values have been assigned to the ratio of the deflection amplification factor (Cd) to the response modification factor (R) for a specified force-resisting system in the seismic design provisions while the same application is defined for it. An analytical study of the seismic responses of several reinforced concrete frames subjected to a suite of earthquake records performed in this research indicate that the stories’ overstrength and stiffness distribution along the structural height can affect local deflections more than global ones. Therefore, the Cd/R ratio is calculated based on the ratio of both maximum inelastic to maximum elastic displacements and...

Enhancement of bond characteristics of ribbed-surface GFRP bars with concrete by using carbon fiber mat anchorage

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 134 , 2017 , Pages 507-519 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Ashrafi, H ; Bazli, M ; Vatani Oskouei, A. V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
The bond of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement is expected to be more sensitive to the strength and geometry of the ribs than conventional steel reinforcement. In this study, the effect of carbon fiber mat anchorage on the pullout behavior of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars embedded in normal concrete is studied. The studied parameters were the compressive strength of the concrete (16 MPa, 24 MPa, and 37 MPa), and, the length and diameter of the anchorage. In total, 15 variables were studied. Ribbed GFRP bars with 10 mm nominal diameter and 80 mm embedment length, ld, (which is 8 times the bar diameter) were considered. Based on the results for concretes with the...

Effect of seawater on pull-out behavior of glued-in single rods set parallel to the grain of timber joints

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 222 , 2019 , Pages 342-357 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Shekarchi, M ; Majdabadi Farahani, E ; Vatani Oskouei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
This paper experimentally investigates the effects of seawater on pull-out behavior of single rods glued in timber parallel to grain. Considering different rod diameters (6, 8, 10 mm), slenderness ratios (7.5, 10, 15), rebar materials (steel and GFRP), and immersion time in seawater (0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 days), 324 specimens were tested. Mean strength reduction about 39 and 55 percent was observed for 90-day immersed joints constructed with GFRP and steel rebars, respectively. Rebar diameter and slenderness ratio significantly influenced ultimate loads, and dominant failure mode was at adhesive/timber interface. Finally, two novel strength models were developed empirically. © 2019 Elsevier...

    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
One of the most essential and costly stages in Concrete Face Rockfill Dams (CFRD) construction is to implement the concrete at the upstream face of the dam without joints. As the face concrete is considered as the most integral part to prevent water penetration in CFRDs, it's quality control is of paramount importance. One of the conventional approaches for quality control of the concrete which is used in CFRD is the compressive strength of laboratory samples. The comparison of laboratory and in situ measurements provides information about the accuracy of the obtained results. This research investigates the correlation of concrete compressive strength determined by using different methods in...

    Abstract
This paper studies the results of compression diagonal tests conducted on a series of retrofitted and non-retrofitted small-scale masonry walls (which are also known as wallettes). Wallettes with the same characteristics and mechanical properties of large masonry walls were retrofitted by using two arrays of glass fiber reinforcement polymer (GFRP) sheets (grid and diagonal), two arrays of carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) sheets (grid and diagonal), and near surface mounted bars (steel and GFRP). FRP sheets were applied to both surfaces of the wallettes, and rebar was mounted onto one of the surfaces in two horizontal and two vertical arrangements. All of the methods significantly...

    Abstract
In this paper, the seismic design parameters of steel special truss moment frames (STMFs), including the response modification factor (R), over-strength factor (Ω) and displacement modification factor (C d) are evaluated for two performance levels, namely life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP). The effects of geometrical dimensions of the special segment located at the middle part of truss girder and the number of stories are investigated. Twelve steel STMFs with 3, 5, 7, and 9 stories with three bays are considered to evaluate the parameters. In addition, three special segment lengths are considered for each STMF. The truss-girder members are made of hollow structural sections (HSSs)...

    Abstract
Purpose - A numerical method is developed to capture the interaction of solid object with two-phase flow with high density ratios. The current computational tool would be the first step of accurate modeling of wave energy converters in which the immense energy of the ocean can be extracted at low cost. Design/methodology/approach - The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are discretized on a regular structured grid, and the two-step projection method along with multi-processing (OpenMP) is used to efficiently solve the flow equations. The level set and the immersed boundary methods are used to capture the free surface of a fluid and a solid object, respectively. The full...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahedi, Amin (Author) ; Ramezani, Asghar (Supervisor) ; Ghaemi Osgouie, Kambiz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Increasing and diversified use of micro electromechanical components necessitates further development of methods for their secure gripping and transfer. In this research, a piezoelectrically driven microgripper including two gripping sets with four arms has been designed. The system can hold and handle microparts from 100 to 150 microns by applying corresponding voltages between 80 to 20 volts. The design is such that after positioning the work piece between the two microgripper arms the piezoelectric comb-drive actuators are activated. Then the two gripping arms are moved toward each other and ultimately grasp the work piece. In order to determine the behavior of the...

Dynamic Characteristics Analysis of Drill-String in Deviated Oil Well

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zoveidanian, Soheil (Author) ; Ghaemi Osgouie, Kambiz (Supervisor) ; Salarieh, Hassan (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Oil field industry is one of the most challenging engineering subjects. In oil well drilling, undesired motion could raise a lot of problems such as stuck pipes; wash out pipe, and etc. In this industry, motion prediction is very important because a good prediction can avoid instruments failure and as a result considerable amount of time could be saved. Predicting dynamic characteristics of drill-string such as whirl orbit, whirl speed, and axial, lateral, and torsional displacements, accelerations, and velocities, might be useful in avoiding or decreasing failures. A program based on FEM (Finite Element Method) is developed in MATLAB considering deviation of drill-string, contacting with...

    Abstract
A new perspective suitable for understanding the details of nonlinear pumping (formation of traveling shocks) inside a pressurized cavity is constructed in this paper. Full compressible axisymmetric three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are used as the starting point to cover all complexities of the problem that exceedingly increase for particular ranges of Mach, Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. Then a very high-order numerical method is introduced to preserve the user-defined order of accuracy for practical simulations. For removal of spurious waves, higher-order compact filters are derived. All equations are marched in time using the classical Runge-Kutta algorithm which is appropriate...

    Abstract
Large-stencil schemes which their spectral properties are acceptable in the vicinity of ω = π are analyzed for the first time. A machine independent model for evaluating the efficiency of generalized time-marching finite-difference algorithms over periodic domains is developed. This model which is based on operation count reveals that for small values of Total Computational Cost(TCC), the previous low-order small-stencil schemes are more efficient while for moderate TCC, the efficiency of optimized large-stencil schemes abruptly increases. This important result is the motivation for developing optimized large-stencil schemes. The current schemes are successfully implemented in a full...

    Abstract
Recently, several high-order accurate methods have been developed for solving nonlinear equations governing in the high-frequency oscillations of a fluid column. If we assume that the value of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers are high enough then it is possible to neglect the effect of Stokes Layer and it has been previously shown that the calculated pressure profile obtained by solving three-dimensional axisymmetric compressible NS (Navier-Stokes) equations is in good agreement with one-dimensional adiabatic model of Ilinskii. For this particular flow which is the typical of engineering flows inside acoustical compressors, it is clear that high-resolution simulation of NS equations in higher...
