Optimal Placement of Active Filters in a Power System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemian, Majid (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The extensive use of nonlinear loads such as motor drives and new generation of home appliances has caused a deterioration of power quality in power systems. The use of active power filters due to the fast variation of the loads has been recommended by power engineering. In this method, the harmonic profiles are controlled by applying active filters in a distribution feeder. Optimal placement of active filters in a distribution system due to the increase of harmonic generation loads has attracted researchers. However placement of each filter is the major concern that researchers face. In this paper, a new objective function is introduced to determine the optimal number and location of active...

Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Wastewater Treatment by Using the Electrocoagulation Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dehnavi, Mehdi (Author) ; Ghasemian, Saloumeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Industrial wastewater treatment has always been one of the significant human being problems for the years. In particular, sewage containing heavy metals that, if discharged into nature, would have irreversible effects on the ecosystem and human health. Due to their toxic nature, heavy metals will reduce the efficiency of wastewater treatment systems if they are not efficiently treated. Also, the removal of Nitrate from the wastewater, which is one of the most stable nitrogen oxides, has always been a serious human problem in the treatment of effluents due to their high solubility in water. The simultaneous presence of nitrate and heavy metals in the effluent will cause many problems in the...

Modeling of Thermotropic Swelling of Smart Microgels by Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemian, Hossein (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Microgels, three-dimensional networks belonging to the family of smart materials, exhibit significant structural changes in response to external stimuli such as temperature. The rapid deformation of microgels upon thermal stimulation makes them a promising alternative for various mechanisms. Despite the similarities between hydrogels and microgels, many of their properties differ. Moreover, the Flory-Rehner model, typically used to describe the swelling behavior of temperature-sensitive hydrogels, only provides a qualitative description of microgel swelling. Nevertheless, previous numerical models of microgels have largely been based on the assumption that their behavior mirrors that of...

Guidance Algorithm Development and 6DOF Control in Final Rendezvous Phase with Uncooperative Target

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemian Sahebi, Ali (Author) ; Saghafi, Fariborz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many future space missions, will require a high level of autonomy to service, repair, refuel, reconfigure satellites. As we know there is no project that has demonstrated an actual online pathpelanning for a terminal rendezvous phase in docking maneuver, for an uncooperative tumbling target. Particularly when the target is in a noncircular orbit. Such missions require a 6DOF precise position and attitude tracking maneuver that safely can avoid collision to the target and are capable of flying around. This thesis introduce a new guidance method for vectorial approach to the target in terminal rendezvous phase and applies a Sliding Mode method for attitude tracking control with respect to...

    Abstract
Flux reversal permanent magnet generators are well suited for use as wind turbine generators owing to their high torque generation ability and magnetic gear. However, they suffer from poor voltage regulation due to their high winding inductance. In this paper, a design optimization method is proposed for flux reversal generators in wind turbine applications. The proposed method includes a new multiobjective function. Cost, volume of the generator, and mass of the permanent magnet are considered in it independently and simultaneously. Besides the new objective function, the main superiority of this paper compared with published papers is considering winding inductance in optimization...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahedi Ghasemian, Zahra (Author) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Liquid crystals are the type of the matter which show different levels of symmetry and structural properties in between those of a crystalline solid and an isotropic liquid. They can form various phases such as uni- or bi-axial nematics that because of their applications in display technology, have been widely investigated. In this thesis, uniaxial and biaxial ellipsoid liquid crystals have been simulated by using molecular dynamics simulations using LAMMPS simulation software. By control of the density of the system in NVT ensemble, the phase transitions of the systems were investigated. In all the simulations, the mesogens interact with RE-squared coarse grained force field. By calculating...

    Abstract
Smart water injection is recognized as an effective EOR process to alter the wettability and interfacial tension to obtain higher micro/macro sweep efficiencies. This water contains reactive ions such asMg2+, Ca2+ andSO42- which can act as potential-determining ions and change the surface charge of calcite rocks. One of the major concerns in the execution of an effective water-flood process, especially in tight carbonate reservoirs, is the chemical incompatibility between the formation brine and the injecting water. In the present study, laboratory fluid compatibility tests were carried out and software simulation was done to investigate the most important challenges of the water-flooding...

Design and Optimization of a Flux Reversal Permanent Magnet Generator for Power Density Improvement in Direct Drive wind Turbine Application

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemian, Majid (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor) ; Nasiri Gheidari, Zahra (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, due to gearbox drawbacks, the direct-drive wind turbines have received much more attention. Permanent magnet synchronous machines are commonly used for this purpose. The flux reversal machine with a magnetic gearbox and high power density could be an appropriate alternative. Due to placement of permanent magnets on the stator, the machine has a simple and robust structure and provides more reliability. There is limited study on optimization of the flux reversal machine and the existing papers are not complete and many parameters like PM dimension, working temperature, and winding reactance are not considered in the optimization process.Considering the flux reversal machine...

    Abstract
In this paper an extension of the sparse decomposition problem is considered and an algorithm for solving it is presented. In this extension, it is known that one of the shifted versions of a signal s (not necessarily the original signal itself) has a sparse representation on an overcomplete dictionary, and we are looking for the sparsest representation among the representations of all the shifted versions of s. Then, the proposed algorithm finds simultaneously the amount of the required shift, and the sparse representation. Experimental results emphasize on the performance of our algorithm. ©2008 IEEE

Removal of Micropollutants using the Combination of Advanced Oxidation Process and Bioreactor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motahari, Shahriyar (Author) ; Ghasemian, Saloumeh (Supervisor) ; Ghobadi Nejad, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Micropollutants are a wide group of organic compounds that are detected in most compartments of the environment. Their environmental concentration is usually in the range of few ng/l to mg/l, but they remain biologically active even at such low concentrations; may be accumulated through the food chain, and pose a serious threat to the environment, fauna, and human health. Among micropollutants, pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) are of special concern. It is accepted that the main sources of PhACs in the environment are effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where conventional activated sludge processes are not able to degrade most of them. To address these concerns, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shamsi, Zahra (Author) ; Ghasemian, Saloumeh (Supervisor) ; Yaghmaei, Soheila (Supervisor) ; Ghobadinejad, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Statistics show that plastic production in the world is increasing, with 335 million tonnes in 2016 reaching 367 million tonnes in 2020. Since the presence of plastics in the dimensions of micro and nano, especially in aquatic environments can have adverse effects on human health and other living organisms, it has raised major environmental concerns. Therefore, it is necessary to think of measures to remove them and develop efficient methods for eliminating and decomposing microplastics. Recently, the advanced oxidation processes have attracted much attention because of the ability to eliminate recalcitrant compounds. In this study, electrochemical techniques and Fenton-based techniques for...

    Abstract
A signed graph Gσ is an ordered pair (V(G),E(G)), where V(G) and E(G) are the set of vertices and edges of G, respectively, along with a map σ that signs every edge of G with +1 or −1. An eigenvalue of the associated adjacency matrix of Gσ, denoted by A(Gσ), is a main eigenvalue if the corresponding eigenspace has a non-orthogonal eigenvector to the all-one vector j. We conjectured that for every graph G≠K2,K4{e}, there is a switching σ such that all eigenvalues of Gσ are main. We show that this conjecture holds for every Cayley graphs, distance-regular graphs, vertex and edge-transitive graphs as well as double stars and paths. © 2020 Elsevier Inc

    Abstract
One of the major environmental problems in recent years is the presence of micropollutants that cause many problems for the environment and living organisms. Diclofenac is one of the micropollutants and endocrine disruptors. Conventional treatment methods do not have the ability to effectively remove pharmaceutical pollutants and micro-pollutants, and finding a suitable approach to remove these pollutants is of great importance. In recent years, biological methods such as the use of enzymes and molds have received attention, but due to the relative removal of pollutants, these methods have been combined with membrane technology to improve the level of pollutant removal and increase the...

    Abstract
The energy of a graph G, E(G), is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Gutman et al. proved that for every cubic graph of order n, E(G)≥n. Here, we improve this result by showing that if G is a connected subcubic graph of order n≥8, then E(G)≥1.01n. Also, we prove that if G is a traceable subcubic graph of order n≥8, then E(G)>1.1n. Let G be a connected cubic graph of order n≥8, it is shown that E(G)>n+2. It was proved that if G is a connected cubic graph of order n, then E(G)≤1.65n. Also, in this paper we would like to present the best lower bound for the energy of a connected cubic graph. We introduce an infinite family of connected cubic graphs whose for...
