    Abstract
Shallow landslides triggered by heavy rainfalls have caused casualties and economic losses to domestic infrastructures and industries worldwide. Rainfall mainly reduces the soil matric suction and the shear resistance, resulting in shallow landslides. Vegetation is an eco-friendly and cost-effective method for stabilizing slopes prone to shallow landslides. This research aims to investigate the hydrological and mechanical effects of vegetation on slope stability through a numerical study approach. Vegetated and bare slopes were subjected to a recorded climate condition and two rainfall scenarios of high intensity (HI) and low intensity (LI). Matric suction and factor of safety of vegetated...

Determinants of Free Trade Agreements Based on Limited Dependent Variable Models: ECO countries and their major trading partners

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Mahdi (Author) ; Abedini, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Establishing an efficient free trade agreement (FTA) requires some conditions in both trading partners. The median voter approach insists on the direction of general interests (identified by the utility of a median voter) to explain how two countries may agree to sign an FTA. At the other side, lobbying approach emphasizes on the role of interest groups (groups with a large influence on the public decisions) in forming FTAs. Taking into account the theoretically based and empirically robust foundation of the median voter approach, we rely on it to investigate the major determinants of free trade agreements in the case of ECO countries besides all their main trade partners. The database...

Development a Numerical Algorithm for Differential Relay for Transformer Protection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Mohammad (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of this master thesis is to develop a new accurate numerical algorithm for digital differential relay to protect a power transformer. This work employs specially developed software to simplify its input signal processing task which helps to quickly and accurately detect and clear the transformer internal faults. The available commercial transformer digital differential relays lack the required sensitivity to detect turn to turn faults when a few numbers of turns (less than 10% of the winding) are involved. This work presents a new equivalent circuit for transformer when a turn to turn fault occurs on either winding. This equivalent circuit helped to develop an accurate algorithm for...

    Vibration Analysis of Screw Compressor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Mohammad (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Screw compressors are rotary positive displacement compressors that utilize a pair of helical lobed rotors in a casing. Part 3 of ISO 10816 does not include Positive displacement compressors. VDI 3836 has more vibration amplitude limitations for this compressor than industrial machines under ISO 10816-3. The screw compressor has no valves; therefore, the location of the suction and discharge ports determines the compressor cycle. This study focuses on the condition monitoring through vibration analysis of screw compressors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reason for excluding of screw compressors by ISO standard and also to explain the vibration dependence of these...

Strategies for improving MDA-based development processes

    , Article SMS 2010 - UKSim/AMSS 1st International Conference on Intelligent Systems, Modelling and Simulation, 27 January 2010 through 29 January 2010, Liverpool ; 2010 , Pages 152-157 ; 9780769539737 (ISBN) Fahmideh Gholami, M ; Ramsin, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is meant to facilitate system development by using models for representing both the "problem" and its "solution". In its ideal form, software development based on MDA would follow a development process that begins by producing models of the problem domain at a high level of abstraction, and then proceeds by gradually and automatically transforming them into executable code with the help of tools. However, MDA-based development has encountered several setbacks, the mitigation of which requires detailed scrutiny and analysis. In this research, MDA-based development is analyzed through applying SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis...

Gas-phase kinetics and mechanism of diallyl sulfide thermal decomposition

    , Article Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2003 , Pages 153-157 ; 08943230 (ISSN) Gholami, M. R ; Izadyar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
The gas-phase kinetics of diallyl sulfide pyrolysis were studied experimentally and theoretically in a static system over the temperature range 433-463 K and a total pressure of 80 Torr in a glass vessel with the free radical inhibitor cyclohexene. The experimental results show that this reaction is homogeneous, unimolecular and follows a first-order rate law. Theoretical studies at the B3LYP/6-31G* computational level indicate that the elimination reaction proceeds through a six-centered cyclic transition state and the reaction mechanism is concerted and non-synchronous.
