GPU-based Acceleration of Isogeny-based Cryptography
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bayat Sarmadi, Siavash (Supervisor)
Abstract
Post-quantum cryptography, as one of the newest groups of cryptographic algorithms, is thought to be secure against most sophisticated attacks by the groundbreaking quantum computers. Isogeny-based cryptography is an appealing contender among them due to its exceptional characteristics, especially the shortest public key in key encapsulation, encryption and decryption amid the other nominees of NIST post-quantum standard. However, its high computational complexity is a significant drawback. This research aims to increase the performance of isogeny-based cryptography in the most compute-intensive part, both in throughput and latency perspectives on GPUs and CPUs, which are the most widespread...
Effects of APS Coating on Wear Characteristic of Internal Combustion Engine's Cylinder
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor) ; Yousefi, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
The quest for increasing the efficiency of internal combustion engines is going on since the invention of automobile in the world. Wear between cylinder and ring is one of the major parameters reducing the engine performance. So many parameters are affecting the wear losses. Temperature plays a key role on the severity of wear condition in internal combustion engines. In conventional cast iron cylinders, we are not able to increase the temperature from a defined level; one reason is that the wear rate on cylinder ring contact will increase excessively. One of the major benefits of using ceramic coating is their ability to withstand in higher temperatures, while having adequate hardness to...

Experimental and Numerical Study of Multi-track Laser Cladding to Evaluate Effects of Residual Stress on Fatigue Life
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Farrahi, Gholam Hossein (Supervisor) ; Shodja Razavi, Reza (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Laser cladding is a processing technique of layer-by-layer material deposition which is widely used to repair important components. However, tensile residual stresses generated in this process may result in detrimental effects such as crack, undesirable deformation and reduced fatigue life. A thermo-mechanical finite element model is developed to accurately predict residual stresses of the multiple beads laser cladding process with incorporating the cyclic plasticity into the analysis by utilizing the nonlinear kinematic hardening behavior. FE results are presented for Inconel 718, a material for which the laser cladding process is widely used. The FE results are compared with those of...
Design of bolted joints in pressure vessels by dynamic modelling
, Article Proceedings of the Eight International Conference on Civil and Structural Engineering Computing, Vienna, 19 September 2001 through 21 September 2001 ; 2001 , Pages 123-124 ; 0948749768 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2001
Abstract
The dynamic behavior of a closure bolting system was predicted using a spring-mass-damper model. The loading was assumed to be an initially peaked, exponentially decaying internal pressure pulse acting on the closure. It was observed that optimal pre-stress values that minimized the peak bolt deformation and stress, existed for relatively high levels of applied force and low pre- stress
Dynamic buckling of columns considering shear deformation and rotary inertia
, Article Proceedings of the Eight International Conference on Civil and Structural Engineering Computing, Vienna, 19 September 2001 through 21 September 2001 ; 2001 , Pages 75-76 ; 0948749768 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2001
Abstract
The individual and combined effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia on the columns was discussed. It was shown that the shear deformation effect always tends to reduce the buckling load. It was observed that rotary inertia for supported columns has no effect on the buckling load. The critical buckling load of perfect columns subjected to static axial loading was calculated using the Euler-Bernoulli theory

Abstract
In this paper, the application of an actuator wire made of shape memory alloy (SMA) and externally attached to a cantilever beam is analyzed. To this end, an integrated model that includes the constitutive equations of the SMA, the phase transformation equations from martensite to austenite and vice versa, the heat transfer equation for the SMA that also includes the input energy from an electric source, and the equations of the elastic deformation of the cantilever beam as well as the SMA wire, is presented. The simultaneous solution of the mentioned set of equations can result in the evaluation of the system response to an electrical activation of SMA

Abstract
The overlapping generations (OLG) model of micro-based macroeconomics has been utilized in order to calculate the optimal sequence of inter-generational transfer payments and evaluate its effects on the operation of an economy which suffers from the poverty trap. Each generation has been assumed to live for two periods and aims to find the optimal relationship between its borrowing from the previous generation and its lending to the next generation so that its discounted utility function is maximized. This optimization is subjected to budget constraints, the competitiveness of labor and capital markets and the equilibrium condition of savings and capital. Individuals in all of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haji Mir Sadeghi, Mir Omid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the era of the internet and with the emergence of online stores, the possibility of changing prices for these e-commerce platforms has become simple and virtually cost-free. This allows them to adjust prices optimally in response to environmental and surrounding factors, maximizing their revenue from product sales. This development has led to numerous applications of statistical learning methods, particularly online learning, in these markets. In this thesis, we explore the issue of online pricing from various perspectives. One aspect is that product pricing is based on their features, which can be numerous. This leads us to the use of online learning methods and statistical learning in...

Abstract
This paper presents the influence of the severe shot peening process on the fatigue life of the laser-cladded Inconel 718 specimens which can be employed during refurbishment of components enduring high mechanical cyclic loads such as gas turbine components. In order to quantitatively evaluate the destructive effect of laser cladding on the fatigue endurance, fatigue tests are first performed on the as-received and laser-cladded specimens. Then, microstructural analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) is carried out to identify the root causes of the drawback of laser cladding. Moreover, by employing a comprehensive laser-cladding FE analysis considering cyclic plastic material...

, Article Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures ; Volume 15, Issue 8 , 2004 , Pages 589-600 ; 1045389X (ISSN) ; Inman, D. J ; Sharif University of Technology
2004
Abstract
The mathematical modeling of a bolted joint with a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator ring is presented. In this way, phase transformation, constitutive and displacement compatibility equations are used. The obtained model is utilized to show how the application of the SMA actuator ring in the bolted joint can help the joint to recover a significant amount of its lost clamping force. The model is run using the experimental data obtained for the Ni-55.7%wt Ti SMA in the companion paper (Part 1). The mechanical properties of SMA are calculated using the mentioned equations and compared to the experimental findings. It is observed that the final clamping force obtained theoretically is close to...

Abstract
One of the main problems with a bolted joint is losing its preload. In this situation, it cannot provide the required clamping force needed to keep the joint members together or prevent fluid leakages. Although every effort is usually made at the design stage to prevent such failure, because of the numerous factors present in the problem, these efforts are not always successful. After loosening occurs, the joint should be retightened to regain its preload. However, there are circumstances where the joint is very important but it is not easily accessible and retightening cannot be done manually. The shape memory effect (SME) property can be used in such circumstances to produce the necessary...
P - Adic L Functions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahshahani, Siavash (Supervisor)
Abstract
Using interpolation and starting with Bernoulli numbers, posed by Leopold and Kubota, the aspect of adic function was constructed as adic analogues of the Dirichlet functions.Studing Galois module theory of ideal class group and his favorite structure extensions and modules related to them,Iwasawa found a new method for constructing adic functions by using Stickelberger’s elements. These results wich established by Iwasawa are known as Iwasawa Theory and they have many application in Algebriac Number Theory. Iwasawa’s most remarkable disconvry is the facet that at least in some important cases, there is a similar deep algebraic and analytic dichotomy in arithmetic of extensions. A...
The Evolution of a Geometric Space in in the Nineteenth Century
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahshahani, Siavash (Supervisor)
Abstract
The meaning and the nature of space and it’s essential properties seems to be one of the oldest problems which has been continuing to occupy human’s mind during centuries. It can be counted as a common ground between philosophy, mathematics, physics and even art. However this thesis concentrates on the philosophical and mathematical attitudes, neglecting the other aspects of the issue. Prima facie, it appears that the concept of space is essentially mingled with geometry, the science which seems to investigate the essentials of space. Taking it for granted, Kant regarded space, and so Euclidean geometry which dominates it, as an indispensible and necessary structure of the human’s mind....

Abstract
Components in cryogenic milieu with relative motion, like seals and pumps cannot be lubricated by using oils or other lubricants. Therefore materials wear in cryogenic condition is a great concern. To earn valid data about the wear properties of common and super useful material in cryogenic tribosystems, reconstruction wear test apparatus at cryogenic temperature is needed. Investigations on metal-metal couple show that austenitic stainless steels have favorable and auspicious sliding properties at cryogenic temperature. This research provides the wear parameters of austenitic stainless steel AISI type 316 in cryogenic environment. For this purpose two sets of test environment are prepared,...
Transmit signal design in colocated MIMO radar without covariance matrix optimization
, Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 53, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 2178-2186 ; 00189251 (ISSN) ; Nayebi, M. M ; Ghorashi, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, the problem of the waveform design for colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars is considered in two parts. In the first part, we design transmit waveform in order to approximate the desired beampattern with low number of samples in the transmitter. Unlike the traditional waveform design methods, in our solution, waveforms are designed for a specific number of samples. Also, the constant envelope constraint that is an important practical constraint is considered. In the second part, we jointly design the transmit waveform and receive filter by a sequential algorithm, considering a priori information of target and interference angle locations. We have evaluated...

Abstract
In recent years, the active learning algorithms have focused on combining correlation criterion and uncertainty criterion for evaluating instances. Although these criteria might be useful, applying these measures on whole input space globally may lead to inefficient selected instances for active learning. The proposed method takes advantage of clustering to partition input space to subspaces. Then it exploits both labeled and unlabeled data locally for selection of instances by using a graph-based active learning. We define a novel utility score for selecting clusters by combining uncertainty criterion, local entropy of clusters and the factor of contribution of each cluster in queries....
Increasing BIOS Trust in Personal Computers Using Reconfigurable Devices
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bayat Sarmadi, Siavash (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the expansion of digital system threats, trusted computation with a new approach for countering such threats has emerged. This approach is based on using a hardware module for implementing a trusted platform (TPM). TPM includes a chipset and the trusted systems core. Nowadays many of mobile computers do include this technology. This hardware creates trust using a trust chain and expanding this trust to other parts of the system. The starting point in this chain is the computer BIOS. BIOS is the first code that the system usually executes. One of the most powerful recent attacks on computer systems is to infect the BIOS and other firmware. One of such complicated attacks is the rootkit...

Abstract
In recent years, in addition to traditional cryptographic blocks, a hardware blocks in this work namely PUF, has been used mostly for chip ID generation, authentication and so on. In this work we study recent proposed PUFs and their implementations on FPGA, and the measurement of quality metrics on them. Some of most important characteristics of PUFs are unpredictability, reliability, number of challenge response pairs and area. According to experiments that have been performed in this study and also according to previous work, one high-quality PUF in term of uniqueness and reliability is Ring Oscillator PUF. However, the disadvantage of this PUF is small number of challenge and response...
